Oaiias Vadson 1 F.S 1 P.s 1 2 3 4 1 By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com Whatever happened at halftime of the season opener between Haynesville and Springhill may have played a huge role in sculpting the 2005 football season for at least two area teams and mavbe more.

The Tors trailed.20-12. before blowing past the Lumberjacks to start what is a perfect season at the halfway point of the year. For Springhill, the slide hasn't slowed much. like last season, the Lumberjacks started 0-3 and are fighting for the playoffs. They can pin their hopes on the showing the 2004 team made, when it failed to win 1-2A but won a playoff game on the road.

Surprise teams After an opening-game loss, Minden appeared to be in trouble, but a 42-0 win over Jonesboro-Hodge got the Tide back in good standing. Ringgold may have benefitted from redisricting as much as any team in Louisiana, but the Redskins are also winning nondistrict games. Natchitoches Central isn't in line to threaten the best in Class 5A but first-year coach Benjy Pierce and his Chiefs have two wins and the potential for a few more. That's a good direction for what has been a struggling program. Homer has known winning in the last three or four years, but last season's disappointment makes the 4-1 Pelicans a surprise team.

Early struggles Springhill is mirroring that 2004 MARK IIVLES LlhESIBE. FOOTBALL Mark Myles returned a kick 97 yards for the Warriors on Friday in their last nondistrict game. He had also previously scored on an 11-yard play. G'oesbecicl. Columbia 1.

Gruver 2, Wellington 2. Overton 2, Harleton 1. win in the first district outing put the Tide in good shape. That means Red River, the Lakeside-Homer winner and the St. Mary-Ringgold winner have the best area hopes to win a district.

If Cedar Creek and Haynesville can pull off major upsets, against Oak Grove and Evangel, respectively, they should win their districts. Most likely state champions Haynesville may have Evangel to deal with, not to mention Oak Grove, but the tradition is there to give the Tors the confidence to win playoff games. Homer doesn't have the recent tradition and depth is not a strength, but the Pelicans could win some playoff games. Red River, with an explosive passing game, may be a better candidate to advance, depending on its draw. In the MPSA Claiborne might be out of position to defend its MPSA Class A title with some early slips.

The offense is not what it was in 2004, but there are five more games to improve on that. Area Texas schools Marshall is still good and should have success in the Class 4A playoffs. That may not mean a state championship, but the Mavs have established themselves as a dangerous team. If Waskom can win some district games, the Wildcats might be the turnaround team of the year. Justin Aldredge produced at quarterback last season, but losses in the running game have required more of him this year. He is Lewis delivering, rushing for 527 yards and 10 touchdowns in the first five games. Red River's Al Lewis has passed for 1,191 yards and 15 touchdowns, most of that going to Robert McDonald and Clifford Jones.

Lance LaCoste has come up big at quarterback for St. Mary after Bryan Stamey was lost to injury. Across Natchitoches, Patrick Berryman is again leading the Chiefs' rushing attack. Haynesville is playing its usual game by spreading things around, but Cornell Evans has been producing rushing yards and touchdowns every week. In the MPSA.

Lakeside could also play at home. Haynesville, with five wins and plenty of chances to build on that, is a near lock and should be one of the top seeds in Class 1A The winner of the St. Mary-Ringgold game, and perhaps the loser, should be at home, barring a collapse in other games. If Cedar Creek and Grambling can do in District 2-LA. games what they've done early, they have a shot.

Other teams with their sights on playoff bids Logansport, Ruston, Springhill and even North DeSoto are playing for postseason invitations. The Lumberjacks need a win over Homer or Lakeside to be sure.
