Government says U.S. industry will enjoy better year during '86 t_ fVio **anrtv*+ onirl rtrvmnonioc man. 1Qftd The Salina Journal Wednesday, January 1,1986 Page 6 : WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. industry will have a better year in 1986, with 80 percent of manufacturing companies expected to enjoy higher growth while the country's dominant service industries increase their profits, the government predicted Tuesday. The Commerce Department, releasing its 648-page forecast of U.S. business prospects, said growth in 1986, while not up by a spectacular margin from 1985, will be at least more uniform, with the gap between the fastest-growing companies and the also-rans narrowing. In its annual prediction of winners and losers, the department said the semiconductor industry should enjoy the fastest growth in 1986, a projected gain in shipments of 28.6 percent. - At the other end of the spectrum, the report said companies manufacturing turbine generators would suffer a 30.7 percent drop in shipments in the new year. These forecasts are extensions of earlier trends. Over the past 14 years, the semiconductor industry, which manufactures the tiny silicon chips, has enjoyed annual growth in shipments of 32.3 percent a year. Meanwhile, turbine makers have seen sales slump by 8.6 percent annually over the same period. For U.S. manufacturing as a whole, the growth in shipments should average 2.2 percent, up slightly from the 2 percent gain this year. It would mark the fourth consecutive year that shipments of manufactured goods has increased, with the biggest rise a 5.3 percent gain recorded in the boom year of 1984. Shipments of manufactured goods last declined during the recession year of 1982, when they fell 4.5 percent. At a briefing for reporters, Deputy Commerce Secretary Clarence J. Brown said the study showed that "1986 should be a good year." While forecasting gains in goods- producing industries, Brown said the country's burgeoning service industries such as banking and insurance would do "even better" in the coming year. He forecast that assets in mutual funds would grow by 36.5 percent in the coming year, the biggest increase of any single service industry, followed by an expected 12 percent gain in revenues by firms offering legal services. Buffalo close to snowfall record BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — This city known for its blizzards hit the last day of 1985 just two-tenths of an inch shy of having its snowiest month, but some folks were just as happy that clear skies and above-freezing temperatures were blocking a new record. "I hope the good Lord sends it somewhere else," said Mayor James Griffin. "It's not a record that I'm proud of." "It's kind of a shame ... because it would become just a statistic and not have much meaning," said meteorologist Don Wuerch at the local National Weather Service office. Not like the current record of 68.3 inches, set in January 1977 during the Great Blizzard that residents still use as a benchmark to gauge snowf all. "People can almost recite to you what they were doing when the blizzard hit. And as the years go by, the snow gets deeper and things like that, said J. Patrick Donlon, a spokesman for the city s Chamber of Commerce. . The January 1977 snow followed 62.7 inches the month before. It was also one of the coldest months on record, Wuerch said. The city was declared a federal disaster area. The National Guard was called in. People froze to death in their cars and snow drifts swept over houses. Dr. Ruth's advice on pregnancy prompts recall of 115,000 books NEW YORK (AP) - Ruth Westheimer, champion of good sex, good contraception and good information, has a bad error in her sex guide for teen-agers that has prompted a recall of all 115,000 copies. In a chapter on avoiding pregnancy, the sex therapist and radio-TV lecturer known to her admirers as "Dr. Ruth" mistakenly tells girls that they! are least likely to Westheimer get pregnant at times when they really are most fertile. "I'm very upset that that happened," Westheimer said Tuesday. "I immediately said on my television show and the radio that there is a typo, that we are going to recall all the books." Her publisher will replace the white-covered $3.50 paperback with a red-covered corrected version, said Barbara Uva, speaking for Warner Books. She was not able to estimate how much the recall would cost the company. The error went unnoticed for three months after bookstpres received 115,000 copies of "First Love: A Young People's Guide to Sexual Information," by Westheimer and professor Nathan Kravetz. On Dec. 12, librarian Ann Scar- pellino of Ramsey, N.J., pointed out the mistake in Chapter 10, page 195, which discusses the rhythm method of birth control. "The safe times are the week before and the week of ovulation," the book reads. It should say "unsafe." Scarpellino, 51, who has three grown children, said "most women who've had children know that's wrong." Recalling the book was the only right thing to do, Westheimer said. "God forbid somebody should read that and say, "This is a safe week,' " she said. "I proofread it myself," she said. "I'm not going to put any blame on anybody else. What I think happened is that in my mind I read the word 'unsafe' and didn't catch that it said 'safe.' It's very clear that of course it's unsafe. "Luckily, the next sentence says never to use that method without professional consultation." lam/itu — 1 1 0 91. Santa ...and Nutri/System will help you keep it off forever. 125 Ibs.
