"Haley has hundreds of cattle," says Fred, "and if the ranch doesn't succeed, he can turn if into the biggest barbecue stand in the world." 1 asked why he didn't write that book everyone's begging for. "Too much work," he replied. When 1 suggested he dictate it, iie said, "No, 1 write in longhand, like John Steinbeck and Eugene O'Neill." "Why don't you use a typewriter?" I asked. "In my early days," said Fred, "I did But the neighbors complained they heard the noise through my air shaft; so 1 took to pencil and paper. U'b cheaper." MASON MISSED: James Mason, after seeing "The Third Man," said.

"It's superb. I would have given anything to play the Orson Welles role, but Pamela was having our baby at the time, and I couldn't to Vienna." 1 loved the picture, too. Vienna is mightly dramatic. So Joe Cotten, Orson Welles, and Valli, who does the first acting I've seen since she came to America. The zither music is superb, but doesn't take the place of story climaxes.

Howeve, Carol Reed's directorial touches of genius make up for the holes in. the story. BEST FACE FORWARD: Mac-Donald Carev plavs a dual role in "The Mart With My Face," and has a fist fight with himself. Wonder which profile will steal that scene? Were it John Barvymore, I'd know. Dr.

Jan Sterling is great in "United States Mail." The audience cheered her when she told Alan Ladd off in the picture, and after the preview Paramount handed her a contract. Bob Hope wants her for "The Lemon Drop Kid," and Leo Mc-Garey would like her for his next picfre. Bob Fellows is preparing ''Look Ma, I'm Dancing" for Betty Hutton and, he hopes, Fred Astaire.
