Fun The Salina Journal Tuesday, December 31,1985 Page 19 Many Jr.'film billings dropped The Far Side Crossword By Eugene Sheffer Gossip By ROBIN ADAMS SLOAN King Features Q. I enjoyed Jason Robards' performance in the recent Broadway revival oi Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh" as much as I did seeing him in an earlier production of the play. However, I seem to recall he was then being billed as Jason Robards Jr. Why the name switch? -E.W. A. Jason's father was the distinguished actor Jason Robards whose gifted young son was first professionally called Jason Robards Jr. In time the scion elected to edit his name, a change far from unique in entertainment circles. For instance, Tyrone Power was originally "Jr." too, but likewise bypassed that for a shorter form. Others who later in their careers opted to throw "Jr." to the billing winds include Noah Beery Jr.; Elisha Cook Jr.; Lon Chaney Jr.; Sammy Davis Jr.; and producer SamGoldwynJr. Q. Whatever became of Olivia De Havilland, the actress who played Tank McNamara Robards De Havilland Melanie Wilkes in "Gone With the Wind?"-H.J. A. De Havilland lives in Paris where she moved with her second husband, editor Pierre Galante, in 1955. The marriage didn't last, though. (De Havilland's first marriage, when she was 30, was to novelist Marcus Goodrich. It ended after six years.) At 69, De Havilland remains a sophisticated, relaxed, conversationally generous woman whose biggest pleasure is tending the gardens of her Paris home. Her spiciest tidbit in a recent chat with me was her admission that she once had a secred crush on—no, not Clark Glble — Errol Flynn. De Havilland's daughter, Gisele Galante, is a mag- azine journalist and Olivia herself wrote a book, "Every Frenchman Has One," in 1960, and is currently writing her autobiography. The one constant in her adult live ironically has been the movie titled "Gone With the Wind." Q. Did Prince Charles and Princess Diana actually live together for months before getting married as has been reported?—V.H. A. According to Charles Martin, the biographer who wrote the newly- published book, "Charles and Diana," the couple lived under the same roof for four months before their wedding. Reports at the time had Princess Diana living pre- maritally in a separate residence under the supervision of the Queen Mother. In fact, says the author, she was living in the royal palace itself— on the same floor as Prince Charles. She was at one end of the corridor, he at the other. All that separated them, Martin maintains, were "a few' servants in between." Got a question? Write to Robin Adams Sloan at King Features Syndicate, Inc., 235 E. 45th St., New York, N.Y. 10017.
