II Running back hopes to avoid sophomore slump after freshman success. By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com Darnell Williams leads your football team in rushing yards, earns houorafter honor and then graduates.

What do you do? At Many, you find the next guy, and the Tigers readied down to the freshman class to find their solution, Brandon Sweet Eighteen hundred rushing yards later, problem solved He's a great kid, and last year he just had an outstanding year," first-year coach Marty Williams says. "Some kids just mature earlier than other kids." Williams was an assistant coach for Many last season and takes over with the departure of David Feaster for Class 4A Minden. Inheriting a back such as Sweet, who still has three seasons to play, is the best kind of news a new coach can get And Williams heaps high praise on his sophomore. "I hesitate to compare him to some Sweet body like this, but he kind of reminds me of 1 lerschel Walker, a back like that," Williams says. "He has real thick thighs and just runs hard He's not a cutting type of runner, and he's not that taD of a back, wliich makes him hard to tackle.

And he is a change of pace from the last Many star in the backfield. "Darnell was a very finesse runner. One minute you see him, and the next minute you don't It's a completely different style of runner." This season, numbers could cause Sweet to add to his repertoire, playing some defensive back in certain situations. "Either way it goes, he loves to play the game, Williams says. "That's the type of kid he is.

But we don't have a tremendous number of kids, and he's accepted that role." Back on offense. Sweet will be an anticipated threat by teams on the Many schedule this season, but the experience of quarterback Adam Founds could help ease the pressure with a stepped-up passing game. That is if the offensive line can answer the bel "I think well be a little bit better on the passing side of the ball, but we graduated four offensive linemen, and that's really been the big question for us all summer long," Williams says. "That's yet to be seen, to be honest with you. We've got some sophomores that are having to step up and play." Glenbrook Tlie Apaches got their first win of 2004 last week, defeating lain Dealing Academy 4 W).

Glenbrook is now 1-2. After scoring just 22 points in the first two games, the Apaches scored 45 in their third game. Jared Mourad scored two touchdowns on runs of 59 and 15 yards and also kicked two extra points. Haynesville Coach David Franklin was plenty happy to get the win, but he didn't see perfection out of his Tornado in Friday's 18-7 win over Springhill. "Who was the least sloppy?" he asked after the game.

"We were both sloppy since it's early in the season, but that's no excuse. We had a couple of breakdowns (on defense) and a couple of turnovers in key spots." Springhill nearly made a big play with a blocked punt in the first half, II ESVIME FOOTBALL Robinson made some big plays in Haynesville's 18-7 season-opening victory over Springhill on Friday. Robinson connected with quarterback Pete Beene on the first score of the game. "We were ranked ninth in the state last week and 1 thought for sure when I got to school everybody would be commenting about it, but nobody said a word," he said. "1 didn't say a word to the kids about it until we were up 26-0 at halftimc. A lot of them didn't know about it until the day of the game." And he isn't worried about this week's mind-set.

That was before Homer took a 48-6 lead into the fourth quarter before mass substitions allowed the Farmers to make it a 48-30 final. Coach Glen Kyle says this could be another playoff team.
