But Tech and Pope missed scoring opportunities and UTA took over for one last chance at scoring in the third period. It was no go, though, even though the Mavs' drove to the Tech 27 as time in the period ran out. Hie drive eventually stalled at Tech's 8. UTA wouldn't score until its next possession when Jensen capped an 80-yard drive with a nine-yard run against a freshman-dominated Tech defense. For UTA, now 1-2 for the season with a victory over Southwest Conference foe TCU, it was certainly a long afternoon.

But the Mavs did proveone thing. TCU's standing at the top of the Bottom 10 must be right the go-ahead run Saturday and tne Milwaukee Brewers went on to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The score was tied 2-2 when Sheldon led off the inning with a single and Robin Yount followed with a walk. Brian Downing's single to left and a walk to Pat Kelly started the decisive eighth against Bert Blyleven, 15-10. After Downing took third on Nyls Nyman's fly ball, Hairston sent a drive to deep right-center field Right fielder Dan Ford made a full-speed, over-the-shoulder catch and Downing scored on the play. I had all day to throw. I just did my job." He did it very well, too. Steve passed long from behind UTA's 33 to hit Tilley who jumped over defender Eugene Ayers for Tech's second TD with 2:56 left in the quarter. Pope field goals of 28 and 29 yards and Haynes own one-yard sneak gave Tech its 30-point bulge before the half. Haynes threw Tech's fifth longest touchdown pass ever to Barber with 4:45 left in the third period, capping the Bulldog scoring.

Arlington was down, but not out by the time the third period rolled along. Clifton Williams nearly broke the second half opening kickoff almost ruining the Tech third period hex right there but Larry Anderson brought him down at the Mav's 44. A personal foul violation called against Tech brought the ball 15 yards further upfieW to the Bulldog 40. The Mavs ground out 37 yards to Tech's 3 before facing a fourth-and-3. Bulldogs Stop S.C COLUMBIA, S.C. (UPI) Sophomore running back Kevin McLee, leading a bruising Georgia ground attack, scored twice Saturday night as the Bulldogs took a 28-20 win over 20th-ranked South Carolina. Georgia quarterback Ray Goff attempted only three passes in the first half and none in the second half as the Bulldogs swept to a 21-6 lead going into the fourth quarter and then withstood a Gamecock rally for the win. South Carolina ran its first nine plays without a huddle, driving down to the Georgia one. On fourth down, Coach Jim Carlen elected to go for a field goal and senior Bobby Marino made a 19-yard kick to put the Gamecocks ahead 3-0.

Georgia drove 80 yards in 12 plays on its next possession with McLee rambling over from the five. Marino, who had been bothered by illness, hit a 45-yard field goal midway through the second quarter to close South Carolina to 7-6 but that was as close as the Gamecocks were to come. The safety came when Tulane kicker Howard McNeill recovered a blocked punt a n's tosses fueled Houston on an 88-yard drive midway through the third quarter and John Housman's 30-yardi touchdown run made the score 19-16. But safety Mickey Early picked off a Husmann pass on Houston's next series and SMU moved 52 yards with Whittington dashing 14 yards at the end of the drive to wrap up the Mustangs second win against a single loss.

Houston is now 1-2 for the season. SMU fell behind early on Leonard Copeland's 31-yard field goal, but scrambled back to score 12 points in a nine-minute stretch of a wild first half. Defensive tackle Gene Williams tripped up Houston quarterback Bubba McGallion in the Cougar end zone for a safety to get SMU on the scoreboard. After Houston's ensuing punt, the Mustangs smashed 64 yards on five plays for a touchdown on Chuck Benefield's 31-yard throw to the wide open Freeman Johns. Gators Bite 'Dogs JACKSON, Miss.

(UPI) Fullback Jimmy Dubose raced 74 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter Saturday night to spark the Florida Gators to a 27-10 Southeastern Conference victory over fumble-plagued Mississippi State. Dubose's scamper came only moments after State's Dennis Johnson had romped 65 yards from scrimmage on the first play after the second-half kickoff, putting the Bulldogs ahead 104 in the hard-fought contest Campbell, Akins Pace Lohghorns in Bradshaw's 9-of-10 performance against Chattanooga in 1969. All this right after Lambright admitted that he was concerned about Tech's passing game after its opener against McNeese two weeks ago. "Bradshaw's records are hard to beat," said Haynes when informed that he was going into the record book. But this was a day when all sorts of records were broken, expanded, tied or teased in Tech's second triumph of the season and their second straight in the SLC.

One standard that the Bulldogs im-. proved on was their third quarter streak in which they haven't allowed their opponents to score. Although Arlington threatened twice in the third period, the Bulldogs still haven't been scored on by any Southland opponent in all 20 games (all victories) that Tech has played. The streak also goes back 18 games to 1973, including all opponents. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have backed up 102 points in the third period, the latest score being an 84-yard bomb from Haynes to Mike Barber with 5:08 left in the period.

"Not a thing displeased me," smiled Lambright. "I don't think Steve has ever been better. I thought it was just a matter of time though before our passing game came around." Haynes completed all six of his passes in the first quarter, hitting Any Moody and Pat Tilley on scoring catches of 4 and 33 yards, and Tech led 17-0 after the period. In fact, Tech scored all six times it had the ball in the first half after George Pree fumbled away the opening kickoff as the Bulldogs rolled up a 30-0 lead. Another Bossier Citian Jerry Pope booted a 20-yard field goal for Tech's first score after its original drive stalled inside the Mavs' 3 with 6:55 left in the first period.

Pope kicked two more field goals in the game, but missed a chance to better his own Tech record with a fourth field goal when his 20-yarder in the third period went wide. "I think I was lined up wrong," he offered. But, he said, i He wasn't even aware that his fourth field goal would have been a record. "You don't think of those things when you're doing them." After Arlington marched down to the Tech 20 compliments of the bobbled kickoff where Chris Walker missed a 37-yard field goal, Tech and Haynes took over. Haynes mixed passes to Billy Ryckman and Tilley, between handoffs to Moody and fullback John Henry White before he threw to ex-Captain Shreve wide receiver Rod Foppe for 26 yards and a first down a the 9.

Moody took a pitchout to his right side down to the 2, but the drive soon stopped and Pope came A fumble on UTA's next possession by Rickey Kelly and a recovery by Byron.
