"That dog sure grabbed my attention," the 12-year-old said a few moments later, as the action at the demonstration at Bossier City's National KidsDay 2004 shifted to the other side of the area cordoned off in Mitchell Park, on Cox Street just off Hamilton Road. "Shoot, ITew!" Shala and friend Markina Howard, 11, were just two among hundreds of children, with what seemed an equal number of adults, taking part in the national event Saturday afternoon. Major local sponsors of the event, now in its fourth year, were the Housing Authority of Bossier City and the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

"Last year we had over 850 people and this year we're sure we've reached the thousand mark," said Albert Dyer, director of the Bossier City Salvation Army Boys and Girls Itll musician, said as the six groups and contestants finished their acts and the judging began. "A lot had ticed beforehand, you could tell." Activities ranged from face-painting and Putt Putt Golf to activities with the MudBugs and any number of inflatable attractions like Moon Walks. Refreshments were being sold as well. Nikki Walker showed you didn't have to be a child to enjoy National KidsDay. She grew up in the neighborhood, but now 23, was just there to visit her grandmother, Ada Walker, who lives nearby.

The event looked like fun, and well she ended up trekking with a bunch of other hot and hungry people in a pickle walk. "I wanted to win," she said after the music stopped and her number, 24, was called. "I got tired of walking in circles." Club. "And this year we had more organizations come aboard. Each year it gets bigger and bigger.

We had 50 organizations with us last year, and this year we had 75." Dyer said it seemed to be achieving its goal of bringing children and adults together in ways that matter. "It's a day set aside to spend meaningful quality time with youth, and have fun and festivity," he said. There was a talent show with celebrity judges. They were Bossier Parish Administrator Bill Altimus, who also represents District 9 as police juror; Bossier City Fire Chief Sammy Halphen; KTBS-TV personality Sonja Bailes; and Deidre Osborn with the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank. The AEP-SWEPCO Lightning Bug was on hand as well.
