AlbertJames DeFilippis, funded variety troupe B3 The Courier-News Monday, January 16, 1984 Labor organizer remembers dream of civil rights leader Jane Harmon of former Plainfield mayor "But for all of that he was always a very down-to-earth man." McLaurin, a snowy-haired gentleman whose powerful voice and grip bely his 79 years, mulled over his memories of King and the labor movement that supported him Saturday morning at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church. "Martin just stared at him, and finally said he'd think about it and give us an answer the following day. Today is a state holiday in honor of Dr.

King. State and county offices, banks and many schools are closed. But post offices are open and there will be regular mail delivery since his birthday won't become a national holiday until 1986. The last of a series of weekend activities honoring the slain civil rights leader was scheduled for 11 a.m. today when 10 Plainfield organizations slated a march from City Hall to the YWCA on E.

Front Street. "King had a kind of awe about him, that you could feel whenever you were near him. There was this feeling of destiny that clung to him," he said, a distant look in his eyes. Christopher B. Shore, auto accident victim Hetfield, wife mavor in 1967 and 1968.
