THE COURIER-NEWSTuesday, June 5. 1984 A-5 mmm 41 arrested in major cocaine ring and the region running a continuing criminal enterprise, an offense that carries a penalty of up to life imprisonment, Dumont said. "We've taken down two very substantial drug trafficking organizations which have links to Colombia," said Dumont. The U.S. attorney said the investigation, which involved 17 wiretaps of telephones in New Jersey, began last October when the Colombian National Police notified the U.S.

Drug Enforcement Administration about drug trafficking in New Jersey. The Hudson County prosecutor's office and local police departments NEWARK (AP) Authorities have arrested 41 people in a $500 million-a-year Colombian cocaine operation that reached more than six states and a 42nd suspect died as he swallowed a "lemon-sized" packet containing four ounces of the drug, federal officials announced yesterday. U.S. Attorney W. Hunt Dumont said the 41, many of whom were resident aliens from Colombia, were charged with conspiring to distribute 2,400 kilograms of cocaine a year in New Jersey, New York, Florida, California, Louisiana, Texas and elsewhere.

The leaders will be charged with also joined the case. The cocaine, which was 90 percent pure, entered the United States from Florida and Texas by boat and airplane and then was transported to the New York metropolitan area by courier, Dumont said. He declined to elaborate. Dumont said another suspect swallowed a 'lemon-sized" quantity of cocaine wrapped in cellophane while he was in custody at a home in Weehawken. The man was identified by the Hudson County prosecutor's office as Luis Rios, 33, of Newark.

"When the officers came in, he tried to eat the packet," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Weisen- beck. Hudson County Prosecutor Harold Ruvoldt said the man went into convulsions and died of acute cocaine poisoning. He was dead on arrival at Palisades General Hospital in North Bergen, Ruvoldt said. Dumont said his office did not have a warrant for the man's arrest but that because he was present during the raid "he would have been arrested." The defendants were arrested in raids over the weekend and authorities confiscated 190,000 in cash, 5 pounds of cocaine, narcotics paraphernalia, guns and records.

Rutgers surgical team uses implant antibiotic By JUDY PETSONK Gannett News Service In Brief Greco predicts the new procedure will prevent thousands of deaths from infection following implantation of various artificial devices. The Rutgers team was granted a patent for the process in April. Greco and his colleagues began laboratory work on the idea in 1978 and have successfully implanted the devices in animals. But the operation in May was the first time a device with built-in antibiotics had been implanted in a human. Nearly half a million people have some sort of implant operation each year, and many others have a surgically implanted catheter, or drainage tube.

Infection is the greatest cause of death for patients who receive artificial implants, Greco said. NEW BRUNSWICK A Rutgers Medical School surgical research team has performed the first operation using a new technique in which an artificial implant contains its own built-in antibiotic. The antibiotic is "bonded" to the plastic of devices such as artificial heart valves, artificial hip joints or plastic "arteries" in the legs. The process was developed by a Surgical team headed by Dr. Ralph S.

Greco, professor of surgery and ichief of general surgery at Rutgers Medical School, which is a division of Ithe University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Angelo Lagano, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1358 in Atlantic City, said the strike began at 10 p.m. after negotiations with Acme officials and a federal mediator broke down. Local 1358, which represents 450 workers at 13 stores, had rejected the company's latest offer by a vote of 297-0, Lagano said. Local 1360 in Marlton and Local 27 in Wilmington, had accepted the offer.

Capt. Ralph Zakar of the 71st Precinct identified the suspect as Gregory Pought, of Brooklyn, and said he had been on Rikers Island in lieu of $2,500 bail on a weapons charge when he was taken into custody in connection with the rapes. Zakar, asked at a stationhouse news conference late Monday night if Pought were the "Flatbush Rapist" believed to have attacked about a dozen women in the past several months, replied "The 'Flatbush Rapist' is newspaper terminology.
