In 1966-67, club members built their own curling rink, with two sheets of curling ice, each measuring 14 by 140 feet, on a refrigerated concrete base. Curling is played by two four-man teams. The club was founded in 1963 and for the first three years Teams from the club have done well in these bonspiels, and five times in the past seven years have won district playdowns which allowed them to compete in the U.S.

Men's National Curling Championships. The club's best showing in National competition was in ,1970 when Plainfield finished third with an 8-3 record. This year, curling will start Nov. 1, and on Nov. 6 and 7 there will be a bonspiel for all members and prospective members.

Visitors are welcome at the club, and if they wish to try curling themselves, should bring a pair of rubbers or rubber-scled shoes for secure footing on the ice, and wear comfortable clothing for about 25 degree temperatures. The Plainfield Curling Club is located off Durham Ave. just north of Route 287. the curved path the stone will take. Stones are always delivered with a definite turn since it is not possible to consistently deliver a stone without it developing one turn or the other, and the amount of curve or be up to five feet in either direction.

An important part of curling is the sweeping. Each player carries a broom, with a longer and thinner brush than a house broom, and may sweep in front of his teammates' stones to polish the ice and help the stones travel further. The Plainfield Curling Club schedule includes men's, women's, mixed and junior curling. In addition, there are "bonspiels" or tournaments in which curlers compete at other clubs, mainly in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut on weekends. delivers two 42-pound granite stones toward a circular target about 126 feet away, alternating shots with members of the opposing team.

When all eight stones have been played for each side, that completes an "end," and the object of the game is to finish each end with one or more of your team's stones closer to the center of the target or "house" than any opposing stone. Each such stone counts one point. A game usually consists of 8 or 10 ends. During a game, one player, the "skip," stands in the target area and directs the play, deciding such strategy as whether to take out an opposing stone or to try to slide another stone in closer to the center. He also has to decide whether a clockwise or counterclockwise turn should be given the stone, and how much "ice' to allow for Snowmobile sport continues growth Every outdoorsman has his favorite sport, and snowmobilers can give you reasons and reasons why their activity is the best at least, to their way of thinking.

Firstly, they like being in the outdoors on a nippy day. Gives a brisk feeling and all that. Communing with nature can't be beat. Secondly, they like being in and around snow. Thirdly, they like the "alive" feeling they get with their snowmobile speeding through snow, and the hint of adventure when they take off on new trails in new environments.

And like everything else, when people get together In a particular sport, there will be competition, and that makes it all the more interesting, pitting machines and personal skills man and machine vs. other men and machines. Here are some do's and don'ts recommended by leading manufacturers. Snowmobiles coming out of summer storage need a thorough mechanical checkup, and high on the list of checkouts should be the belt track that propels the vehicle, and the variable-speed drive belt that transfers power from the engine to the track drive and controls acceleration. Both belts should be properly aligned and tensioned to assure maximum "snowmobility." Most belt inspection chores can be performed by snowmobile owners without any special tools.

The track should be checked regularly during the snowmobile season for cuts and breaks, particularly where the track contacts the track drive pulley. Periodically check the drive belt for sheave alignment, belt tension, even wear and correct belt size. Approaching track failure is evident when the drive lugs are worn or the sprocketrtooth holes torn. FBOWmJbFT (W SB!
