THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com High School Football: Week 10 OUACHITA 21, BYRD 20 i SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2003 3C Ruston rallies in victory From Staff Reports Mansfield gets past BTW in OT By Darren Jackson Special to The Times If Mansfield High School running back Ricky Scott was 85 percent healthy on Friday night, then the Wolverines' opponents should hope not to see him at 100 percent. Scott carried the football 29 times for 204 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime to lift Mansfield to a 26-20 victory over 3 1 I I riO' ft booker T. Washington in high school football action. Scott had been hampered by an ankle injury throughout much of the second half of the season. Mansfield coach Scott Michael Dunliip Tn InncS Byrd tight end Claude Harton (left) is taken down by Ouachita defenders after a reception during first-quarter action Friday.

Two big plays late in the game pull Ouachita past Byrd NATCHITOCHES Natchitoches Central raced out to a quick lead but couldn't hold on as Ruston prevailed 36-13 here at Rags Turpin Stadium on Friday night in a District 1-5A finale for both teams. Mark Calvin dashed 71 yards on Natchitoches' first possession to give the Chiefs a r0 lead. But Tony Cox came up big for Ruston with 173 yards three touchdowns as Ruston improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in district Cox's 66-yard fourth quarter touchdown run gave Ruston a more comfortable 29-13 lead and Damien Roane added some insurance with an 8-yard scoring run for the final tally. Cox tied the game fr6 with a 9-yard run in the first quarter. After a bad snap on a punt resulted in a safety Ruston, Cox increased the Bearcats lead to 15-6 with a 6-yard second quarter scoring run.

Natchitoches pulled to within 15-13 before haltime on a Calvin 21- yard pass reception from quarterback Blaine demons. Deangelo Hunter scored from the 1 in the third quarter to give Ruston a 22- 13 lead going into the final period. Natchitoches falls to 2-8 on the season and 0-4 in the district HOMER 34. SPRINGHIU 14: At Homer, the Pelicans (5-5. 3-2) recovered two early Spnnghill fumbles and converted both into touchdowns on their way to a 27-0 halftime lead and coasted to the District 1-2A victory.

Homer quarterback Dustin Danzie threw scoring passes to Rashid Young for 20 yards and to Greg Nelson for 18 yards. Young also scored on a 29 yard run and Nelson added a touchdown on a 12-yard run. The Lumberjacks 4-1) tried to get back in the game when Cednc Mendenhall ran the opening kick of the second half back for a 90 yard score, but Homer answered with Nelson's touchdown run. Damus Nelams added a late score for Spnnghill on a 4-yard run. Young finished the night with 32 rushes for 201 yards.

The loss by Spnnghill dropped the Lumberjacks into a tie for first place in the district with Loyola. ARCADIA 14, HAYNESVILLE 7: At Arcadia, the Hornets moved into a first-place tie with Haynesville in District 1-A with the victory. Haynesville (5-5. 4-1) 33-yard scoring pass from Casey Cooper to DeDanan Robinson to take a 7-6 lead at halftime. Steve Tobin scored the first Arcadia touchdown on a 65-yard run but the game winning score came on a 13-yard Derwm Wilson to James Sinclair pass in the third quarter.

Tobin ran in the conversion. The Hornets (5-5. 4-1) ran up 237 yards of total offense while holding the Golden Tors to 145 yards. Tobin led all rushers with 24 carries for 113 yards. ST.

MARY 35, LOGANSPORT 14: At Logansport. St. Mary's David Howell ran for two first-half scores from 7 and 10 yards out to build a 28-7 halftime lead and the Tigers coasted to the District 3-A victory. St. Mary (64.

4-1) also got a 26-yard touchdown pass from Klent Mullikm to Javier Pere and a sconng run by Patnck Johnson in the first half. Logansport (64, 3-2) got a pair of touchdown passes from Kendrick Hill to Calvin Dagley covering 73 and 9 yards. Pere also had a 10-yard touchdown catch from Bryan Stamey in the third quarter. St. Mary had 324 yards rushing with Howell (21-130) and Blake Guillory (21-105) leading the way.

LAKEVIEW 23, RED RIVER 8: At Lake-view. Red River (5-5, 0-3) got a 43-yard touchdown pass to open the game but it was all Lakeview for the remainder of the game. DeAngelo Coleman scored from 5 and 85 yards out and Darnay Bates added a 4-yard scoring run. Lakeview (6-4, 1-2) also got a safety from Jarvis Epps and Jonathan Watson. Coleman led a 303-yard rushing attack by Lakeview with 162 yards on just eight carries.

Abron, who had a big interception in the end zone in the first half for the Lions, chased him down to save the touchdown. But two plays later, with a steady mist falling since halftime. Donald Mayweath-er said earlier in the week that he hoped Scott would be at 85 percent. Scott's 4-yard touchdown run in overtime was the difference for Mansfield (7-3). Scott's heroics offset a stellar night from BTW quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster.

He rushed for 98 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also passed for 183 yards and a touchdown. Lancaster's 13-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to James McNairy and Lancaster's 2-point conversion run gave BTW an 8-0 lead. Mansfield answered with a 5-yard touchdown run from Scott to cut the deficit to 8-6. The Wolverines took their first lead in the second quarter when quarterback Dale Calhoun ran for a touchdown and a 12-8 lead.

Bossier takes care of Wossman By Gary Delaney Special to The Times Friday night's last game of the 2003 high school football regular season between Bossier and the visiting Wossman Wildcats played at Memorial Stadium saw Bearkats rallied for 20 unanswered points to claw their way from a two-touchdown deficit to a 35-28 victory. The way we came back in the second half showed great character. I'm really proud of our players. This is the kind of momentum we need going into the playoffs," Bossier coach Billy Don McHalffey said after the game. The momentum the Bearkats would claim in the second half belonged to the Wildcats early on as Wossman quarterback Raymece Savage, connected with wide receiver Dexter Wilhite for a 48-yard touchdown pass on the Wildcats' opening drive of the game.

The point-after by Wilhite put Wossman ahead 7-0. On the Bearkats next possession, successive runs of 14 and 18 yards by Bearkats running backs Parnell Scott and Weldon Brown set up a 15-yard blast up the middle by Corey George for a Bossier touchdown with 4:54 left in the first quarter. The point-after attempt by Jonathan Bailey tied the game at 7. Jefferson lost his second fumble of the game. That was a break that we needed," Ragan said.

Ouachita safety Matt Collins recovered at the Ouachita ons called a reverse to Johnson. "With us being 2-6, we had nothing to lose," Johnson said. The play worked. I have to thank the blockers." The speedy sophomore took the pitch and found plenty of open field ahead of him as he sprinted down the sidelines for a 59-yard touchdown. A sharp cut against the grain around the 30 him finish the game-breaking run.

The young man made a great run," first-year Ouachita coach Willie Ragan said. "It wasn't a perfect play, but it was made perfect on his part after he got out and got around. The other kids did a great part of their execution too." Byrd (4-5, 1-3) seemed ready to answer when fullback Tezeray Jefferson ripiied off a 50-yard run down the Ouachita 12. Rodrick trol, the Lions (3-6, 2-2) picked up a pair of first downs from there to run out the clock and clinch third place in District 2-5A Ouachita fullback William Dombrowski led the Lions with 144 yards on 14 carries, including an 88-yard touchdown run that tied the score at 14-14 in the third quarter. "We knew we weren't going to the playoffs." Ragan said "But for these seniors and all they've done for the program and how they stuck in there this year, we wanted them to go out winners.

We also finished third in a pretty doggoned good district. That gives us some momentum to go into spring training." Jefferson gained 192 yards on 19 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns for Byrd, but his two fumbles proved costly. By Paul J. Letlow pletlowthenewsstar.com MONROE Ouachita didn't make the playoffs this season, but the Lions enjoyed the consolation prize finishing their year with a win at home. The lions made two big plays in the final minutes to pull off a 21-20 victory over Byrd in the season finale for both teams.

"It really feels great to get the win for the seniors," said Ouachita tailback Keldrick "KJ." Johnson, who ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns on the night "At halftime we were down. But coach talked to us and we stayed strong." Ouachita trailed 20-14 when it got the ball with 3:28 remaining in the game. On fourth-and-b" in what looked like a passing down, the li Jit HZt, Jefferson 2 with 1:29 left in regulation. "We didn't let our heads get down when he made that big run," Collins said. "We just stuck to it.

Sure enough, it popixd out and we got a turnover." With the ball back in their con- Huntington finishes with road win at Jennings "We're still plugging like it's a one-point ballgame," said Jennings coach Rusty Phelps. At the time of the goal-line stand, his team was down 40-15. "I'm just so proud of them. When we were 0-7, they just kept coming to work and trying to get our football program better." Jennings gave up 477 yards from scrimmage, the most this season. That didn't count Huntington's 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter that countered the Bulldogs' first score.

The Raiders' talent shined. Receiver John Williams plucked a pass out of the hands of tight coverage for a 44-yard touchdown. He flew across the back of the end zone to snatch a 26-yarder later in the first half. Huntington quarterback Dustin Bogan kept the ball up the middle to gain short yardage on fourth down in the second quarter. Not satisfied with the first down, he spun away from the defense at midfield and outran everyone for a 50-yard TD.

Bogan, a senior, ran 21 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns. The southpaw completed eight of 13 passes for 171 yards and two more touchdowns. He kicked the ball for his team and lost his helmet a couple of times on hits he made on kickoff coverage. The game didn't get out of hand right away. Jennings held Huntington on the Raiders' first drive of the game.

Then Jennings made two first downs on its first possession. From Staff Reports JENNINGS Bigger, faster Huntington terminated Jennings' season and handed the Bulldogs their worst record since 1956. Huntington claimed a 48-15 win and finished its season 64 and likely headed for the Class 5A playoffs. The Bulldogs showed more than simply a pulse, though, when they stopped the Huntington starters three straight plays at the goal line in the fourth quarter.
