WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2003 6C I CONTACT BRIAN McCALLUM 459-3298 or sportsshreveporttimes.com a hc dimes 0 0 FOOTBALL NOTES Week will ffeataire htowoufe be a memorable season. Loyola 28. Haynesville 17. Plain Dealing vs.

Red River: The Lions have pulled off their share of upsets over teams with more potential, and the Bulldogs have yet to be impressive. Well, that is until last week. They seem to have awakened with a huge win. Red Kiver 27, Plain Dealing 18. Logansport vs.

North Caddo: The Rebels like being underdogs. There is plenty of reason to make them so this week. Logansport 28, North Caddo 24. Natchitoches Central vs. LaGrange: The Chiefs are struggling with a young team, but this is a chance to get another win.

Natchitoches Central 12, LaGrange 9. Last week: 8-2 This season: 29-9 Brian McCallum is the prep sports editor for The Times. pointing losses, but the Cues probably have the better team overall. That's particularly true now that sophomore quarterback Nick Wilson has had a big passing game. Haughton 27, Captain Shreve 2'S.

Bossier vs. Sprlnghill: The Cearkats are having trouble with injuries and other missing players, (lo with the home team. Springhill 19. Cossier 14. Woodlawn vs.

BTW: This was a district game until last year. Now the Lions have dropped down to 3A. BTW would seem to be the better team, but the Knights have won two in a row while the Lions are going the other direction. WW 12. Woodlawn 11.

Loyola vs. Haynesvllle: The Myers pulled off their biggest feat this season with an overtime win over Many for homecoming. If they can take their show on the road and be successful against a team used to winning, this could Huntington has the players to excel on both sides of the ball. Then there is the difficulty Parkway finds itself in. The Panthers finally get their first win and then look up to find a 4-0 Airline team next on the schedule.

If Parkway plays as well or better than it has, this could be a game. Otherwise, it could be ugly. Southwood is playing three levels below its classification against Class 2A Homer. The Pelicans are another team coming off a good season but not necessarily back to the same level, while the Cowboys are an improving team. This should be the best Week 5 the Cowboys have had in a few years.

Other potential mismatches are Green Oaks over Minden, 4-0 Alexandria over Northwood. Mansfield over North DeSoto and Henton over West Ouachita. So let's get to the tougher ones. Haughton vs. Captain Shreve: Both teams are coming off disai)- THIS WEEK'S GAMES Orleans Parish AD recommends lengthy suspensions NKW ORLEANS The Orleans Parish public schools' athletic director has finished his portion of the investigation of a Sept.

Athletic Director Frank Wilson said lie has recommended that coaches Hon Alvarez and Dervis Harris be susX'iuled for the remainder of the school year. lliey are currently susR'iuled with pay. Alvarez is accused of hitting Barbe assistant coach Paul and Harris is accused of getting into a healed discussion with another Barbe coach. ilson said Monday he hoX'S the Ixmisiana High School Athletic Association takes into consideration his recommendation for a hearing the IJ1SAA has scheduled today in Baton Rouge.

A final decision on the suspensions will be made by Julian Stafford, the area suix'rintendent over Kennedy High School, said school system s)okeswoman 11a Alexander. She said the status of the coaches' pay during the proposed susix'nsions is not known. Meanwhile, Stafford is continuing to investigate the Kennedy band's part in the melee in the Barbe bleachers that took place at the same lime as the incident involving the coaches on the field. Alexander said. lliere have been no arrests, although videotax-s have shown band members fighting with Barbe fans.

Alvarez was booked with second-degree battery the night of the fight. CAPTAIN SHREVE: Gators quarterback Steven Thoma is now fourth on the school's career passing list with 1,783 yards. Brian Williams is the all-time leader with 2.504 yards. LOYOLA: Fivers coach John Thoma LeBlanc is concerned about two things first of all when taking on Haynesville on the road this week: sjx'ed and tradition. He isn't buying V7 5 Welcome to mismatch week, lliere have already been blowouts this sea- son.

but the list of games for this weekend should provide a few more. It's not clear whether coaches are trying to schedule wins to get power points and build confidence or if scheduling is simply dif Brian McCallum ficult, but there are several instances of winning teams from higher classifications playing teams with losing records from lower classes. Take, for example, Huntington vs. Fair Park on Thursday. The Raiders are working to return to the Class 5A playoffs while the Indians are just hoping to have a break-even season.

They aren't down." U'Blanc said, "lliey've just played a couple of tough teams and haven't gotten any breaks. We're go LeBlanc ing to a place where winning isn't just a part of what they are, it's who they are." Now that the Flyers are 4-0 with a big win over a ranked Many team on Friday, U'Blanc sees things heading toward what he would like from his team. "I don't think, as a coach, you can ever be satisfied." he said, "but I'm satisfied with the direction we arc going." NORTH CADDO: First-year North Caddo coach Jerry Byrd didn't want a District 1-2A team to be' his team's homecoming opponent: so that left Ugansport.

Now he's 4-0 and looking at what could be his team's biggest challenge of the season thus far. 'Plough the Rebels have beaten a Class 3A team in BTW, he doesn't' know if any of North Caddo's four victims have been as versatile as the llgers. "They do a lot of different things." Bvrd said. "Most teams that we've faced have had star players, they've had one or two C11VS. handful, four or five guys that can break loose and score from any Byrd where on the field." llie problem is that this is homecoming week at North Caddo, and Byrd knows his players have their; minds on more than football.

He wants those minds on lining up correctly and handling the motion the Tigers will show. "I'm stressing for the players to focus in during practice this week on learning and paying attention to all the different things that Uigansport does," Byrd said. "I think it's going to be more mental than anything this week. (logansport has) a lot of different formations, and they do it all well, lliat's scary when you're trying to defend that."
