Louisville football coach Joe Gant has been fired in a dispute that school superintendent Harry Kemp will only describe as a personnel matter. Gant said he was fired Wednesday for removing pictures of former Louisville stars Rod Baker and Moine Nicholson from the Wildcats' fieklhouse and refusing to put them back on the wall. Kemp would not discuss Gant's firing or the reasons for his dismissal.

Baker, 34, and Nicholson, 27, both are serving time for felony convictions. Gant said he removed the pictures because he doesn't think the players are role models. The letter I've been given says I'm being fired for verbal abuse and profanity in dealing with football players and for insubordination by repeatedly refusing to follow specific directions from the superintendent," Gant said. Gant, 50, is in his first year as the Louisville coach and athletic director. He previously coached for 23 years at Weir, where he became the only coach to win five state championships.

Gant retired from Weir following the 1999 season. He was hired at Iauisville in August, two weeks before the season started, after Tony Stanford unexpectedly retired. "I don't mind being fired for it," Gant said, "because I feel in my heart that it was the right thing to do. I'd do the same thing tomorrow and the same thing 10 years from now." Baker, a quarterback who helped Ijouisvilk win Class 4A stale titles in 1985 and 1986, is in the state penitentiary at Parchman on two counts of uttering forgery and one count of grand larceny. Nicholson, a running back, is in the Kemper County Correctional Facility on one count of selling marijuana and one count of selling cocaine.

The Leslie High School girls' basketball team failed to score a single point in a 61-0 loss to Olivet on Tuesday night. Olivet (14-0) is ranked third in the state in Class and already beat Leslie 56-9 this season. Some teams stand to lose power points for lack of games Open dates 5-3 7-1 7-1 4-4 3-5 1-7 There are 40 teams in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association with fewer than 10 games this season. In addition to lost revenue, each team misses a chance for a victory and for strength points that could improve their chance to qualify for the postseason. Here are the teams with open dates each of the 10 weekends of the 2003 season: i Sept. 5: (5A) Evangel; (3A) Carroll; (1A) Southern Lab Sept.

Red River, Many, Jonesboro-Hodge and Lakeview make up the new 2-2A. "It all depends on if you've been winning," Prealow says in finding games. "We've been really successful, so I have coaches tell me we can't play with you We get the larger teams calling that want to play us, but we're not ready to play 5A teams." Red River shared an open date with 4A power Jolin Curtis, 1A Bootliville-Venice and BTW, which it had already played. "John Curtis has 60 kids; we dressed out 31 the other night," Prealow says. "I did call Boot-hville-Veniee, but it was so late.

The coach said this was just a little too Car." Prealow misses having the larger district he had in 1-2A. He's gone from five or six district games to three, but the waiting to learn the new district alignment hurt just as much in his mind. "My tiling is having an official time to start scheduling." Prealow says. "We were waiting to see who was going to be in our district and who we were losing. Those who pretty much knew what they were getting had already started scheduling." One former opponent of Red River from 1-2A, Homer, played up against 5A Southwood.

That also reduces the number of teams available for 2A opponents, and Prealow doesn't see it changing as long as teams can play down with no penalty in the power ratings. "It used to hurt, because if you played down you would lose points," he says. The big schools, now, will play smaller schools." By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com Mike Greene and his Airline football team was off last week, unable to find an oponent to fill an open date on their schedule. It gave the Vikings a chance to heal their wounds and s)cnd a little more time preparing for their next opponent, the Class 5A No. 1 team.

West Monroe. Reginald Prealow, the head coach at Red River, took his squad to Many for the District 2-2A oener against the Tigers and won, upsetting a team on the edge of the Ijouisiana Six)rLs Writers Association lop 10. Both coaches believe they improved themselves in the power points rankings used to determine which 32 teams in each classification will fill spots in the postseason. "We didn't even play last week," Greene says, "and I tliink we moved up some sX)ts." It was not as productive a weekend for Jim Gatlin. Hie Parkway coach watched his Panthers lose a district game on the road to West Ouachita, previously winless in the district And with the Vikings not playing, Gatlin believes his team may have lost ground in its bid to collect enough X)ints to make the4A playoff field.

His reasoning comes from studying the rules for determining power ratings. In addition to getting points for winning, teams receive points for each of their opponents' wins. At the end of the season, each team's total number of points is divided by the number of games played. Parkway's total points will be divided by 10, because the Panthers will have played 10 games. The Vikings will see their points The New Orleans Saints are offering discounted tickets through the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Terrace sideline tickets, which are regularly $60, will be available for only $45, a savings of more than 35 percent.

The discount is available for the Saints game against the New York Giants on Dec. 14 and the game against the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 28. Those interested should download an order form from the LHSAA Web site at www.lhsaa.org. There is a link to the form on the site's main page.

The Times needs basketball schedules divided by nine, based on a nine-game schedule. Because of Airline could have missed out on a win Uits week, Gatlin will have potentially fewer points but still divide by 10.

1 But it gets worse for Gatlin. Two other Parkway opponents, Booker T. Washington and Wossman, also have had open dates. "It just hurts us," Gatlin says. "Let's just say Airline plays and wins, we're losing right there.

When you are sitting where we are (in the power ratings), it could hull" 1 Greene doesn't expect his nine-game schedule to hurt him directly, but he realizes another win could help depending on the who the opponent would be. "If one of them had nine wins High school basketball coaches are asked to send their bas and you beat them, it may help you," he says. That'll affect you a little bit, but what hurts is if you play a schedule with a team playing nine games." Red River had an open date but also played BTW, which has one itself. Although the big win over Many will help the Bulldogs up their points, they also could miss out on points from BTW. Prealow agrees with Greene that not playing doesn't always hurt.

"When we didn't play, I think we moved up if I'm not mistaken," he says. "But if (BTW) had more ballgames, we could get more points." Prealow's scheduling difficulty came from two factors. His team has been a winner in recent years, and he is in a new, ketball schedules and rosters to The 1 lmes. Coaches for both boys and girls basketball can send their schedules to the attention of Brian McCallum at or by fax to 459-3301. Schedules should include year, height and jersey number.
