Florence Al-lowav 31 03, Nancy Brown 31 10. From Staff, Wire Reports AUBURN, Ala. Randy Campbell connected with Lionel James on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:59 left Saturday to lift lOth-ranked Auburn to a 27-24 college football victory over No. 17 Florida State. FSU quarterback Kelly Lowery had shreaded Auburn with passes and powered over for two short second half touchdowns to give Florida State a 24-20 lead with less than six minutes to play.

But Campbell directed Auburn on a 74-yard scor-. ing march with the ensuing kickoff, capping it with the scoring flip to a wide-open James before 79,600 fans. Auburn linebacker Gregg Carr nailed down the Tigers' third victory in four games by intercepting a pass by Lowery at the Auburn 24 as FSU tried to storm back in the final seconds. Florida State is now 2-2. Auburn fullback Tommy Agce took a short Campbell pass and slipped through several FSU tacklers on a 27-yard touchdown run with no time left on the clock before the half.

The touchdown made it 20-10 Auburn and capped a furious 13-point Auburn spurt in the final six minutes of the half that was inspired by David King's one-handed interception of a Lowery pass in the end zone. A 6-yard pass from Campbell to Jeff Parks put Auburn ahead 7-0 with the game less than two minutes old. But a 5-yard pass from Lowery to Cedric Jones and a 33-yard Phillip Hall field goal moved FSU back ahead 10-7. Auburn's Al Del Greco kicked field goals of 45 and 38 yards in the first half. GEORGIA 20, MISSISSIPPI STATE 7 Sophomore tailback Keith Montgomery scored two touchdowns to trigger llth-ranked Georgia to its Southeastern Conference victory at Athens, the Bulldogs' 19th consecutive league triumph.

Georgia, 3-0-1, took a 17-7 half time lead on a 52-yard first-period field goal by Kevin Butler and Montgomery's 1-yard touchdown plunge and 9-yard pass reception from John Lastinger in the second quarter. Butler added a 27-yard field goal in the fourth period to close out the Georgia scoring. Mississippi State, 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the SEC, scored its only touchdown on quarterback John Bond's 16-yard run midway through the second period. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 27, OLE MISS 7 James Cooper returned a pass interception 38 yards for one touchdown and Louis Lipps bolted 28 yards on a reverse for another in Oxford, propelling the Golden Eagles to their third win in four games. Lipps also caught a 59-yard bomb from quarterback Robert Ducksworth to set up a last quarter touchdown that dashed any Mississippi hopes for a comeback.

Despite the offensive thunderbolts, the Golden Eagles survived behind the brawny backs of their defense, which repelled the Rebels deep inside Eagle territory on four straight series in the third quarter. Trailing 17-7 at the time, Mississippi started with the ball on the Eagle 31, 35, 29, and 20 but did not score after two fumble recoveries, a 55-yard punt return and a 43-yard fumble return. One of the futile series ended with a punt, freshman Bill Smith missed 52 and 47-yard field goal attempts on two others and cornerback Bruce Miller blocked a third field goal try after the Rebels reached the five. Mississippi fell to 1-4 with the loss. Southern Mississippi also scored on field goals of 33 and 29 yards by Steve Clark and on Sam Dejarnette's 4-yard run after Lipps' catch of the bomb in the last period.

ALABAMA 44, MEMPHIS STATE 13 Walter Lewis passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Alabama took advantage of Memphis State mistakes in a non-conference game in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Lewis, hitting on 12 of 19 passes for 156 yards, connected on scoring passes to Joey Jones for 7 yards, Greg Richardson for 36, and Joe Smith for eight as the sixth ranked Crimson Tide ran its record to 4-0. Memphis State dropped to 1-3. Memphis State jumped to a 10-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Don Glosson and a 4-yard pass from Danny Sparkman to Ricky Sparkman. Greg Montgomery set up the touchdown by recovering a fumble at the Alabama two.

TENNESSEE 45.THECITADEL6 Junior kicking specialist Fuad Reveiz kicked four field goals and three extra points as the Volunteers swamped out-manned The Citadel 45-6 in a non-con-fernce game in Memphis, Tenn. The Citadel, a Southern Conference and Division I-AA member, was never in the game although the Bulldogs, now 1-3, kept the Volunteers out of their end zone for the entire first quarter, allowing the Southeastern Conference team only two field goals. But the Volunteers, who leveled their record at 2-2, put the game out of reach in the second quarter scoring three touchdowns and another field goal to take 29-0 half-time edge. The game, Texas' SWC opener, was part of the school's centennial celebration.

Rice, which broke a 15-game losing streak last week with a 22-21 victory over Southwestern Louisiana, did little to spoil Texas' birthday party as Rice quarterback Phillip Money was intercepted three times and sacked seven times for 44 yards in losses. Texas, warming up for its annual intersectional game with Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas next week, got a chance to use quarterback Todd Dodge in the fourth quarter. Dodge, who was Texas' No. 1 quarterback before separating his left shoulder in a Sept. 9 scrimmage, threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Russell Hays.

Texas linebacker Mark Lang intercepted a Money pass on the third play from scrimmage at the Rice 21 and tailback John Walker scored from the 8 with 11:51 left in the first quarter to the delight of 70,005 fans. Safety Jerry Gray's interception at the Texas 49 set up the Longhorns' second touchdown, a 22-yard pass from Moerschell to Bill Boy Bryant. It was also Bryant's first score as a collegiate. Moerschell beat the half time clock with a 52-yard pass-run touchdown toss to Brent Duhon, who had not caught a pass in Texas' first two games this season. TEXAS TECH 3, TEXAS Texas Tech rode Ricky Gann's 51-yard field goal at Lubbock, Texas, to move atop the Southwest Conference standings with a 2-0 record.

The Red Raiders, 2-1 for the season, squandered a pair of prime scoring opportunities in the second half but the Tech defense kept the Aggies bottled up all evening. Raider quar-' terback Jim Hart streaked 58 yards in the fading minutes of the first half to set up Gann's wind-aided kick 27 seconds before the intermission. 1-3, "ever mounted a serious scoring threat and, with CFL GLANCE St. Cloud St. 21 S.

SMU 34, TEXAS-ARLINGTON Freshman Jeff Atkins and sophomore Reggie Dupard each gained more than 100 yards rushing and led 13th-ranked Southern Methodist to an easy win in a non-conference game in Irving, Texas. Dupard gained 168 yards on 13 carries, including a 69-yard touchdown on the second play of the fourth-quarter, while Atkins added 140 yards on 2 1 carriers and a 9-yard first-quarter touchdown. SMU quarterback Lance Mcllhenny completed six of 10 passes for 123 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown to freshman Ron Morris, and ran the Mustangs' unbeaten string to 20 games, the longest such streak in the NCAA Division I. SMU, 4-0, dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage throughout the game. BAYLOR 42, HOUSTON 21 Baylor quarterback-fullback Allen Rice ran for three 1-yard touchdowns, Alfred Anderson scored two more and Houston's offense self-destructed with seven turnovers as the Bears rolled to a Southwest Conference victory.

Houston, the No. 6-ranked rushing offensive unit in the nation, lost five of 10 fumbles and two interceptions with three of the miscues leading to Baylor touchdowns. Another fumble stopped a UH drive at the Baylor 2-yard line. Rice's three 1-yard dives and a 25-yard sprint by Alfred Anderson provided Baylor with a 28-14 halftime lead behind the triple quarterback combination of Rice, Tom Muecke and Cody Carlson. Anderson fueled Baylor's ground game with 142 yards on 17 carries.
