71101 Mr. William E. Carter, Jr. SHREVEPORT, LA -fav William Ernest Carter, 4 died on Monday, May 6, 2002, after a lengthy ill- ness. He is survived by two sons, Michael William Carter and Guy Stephen Edwards Carter, both of England, and by six grandchildren.

Bill was born August 8, 1922, in Shreveport, La. He attended Fair Park High School, graduated at the age of 16, and entered Centenary College, where he attained a bachelor of science degree in psychology in the spring of 1942. He joined the Army shortly thereafter, where he used his considerable intellect to decipher intercepted messages in World War II while stationed both on land and at sea. After the war, he worked for the State Department in Berlin, Germany, and then in Washington, D.C., before moving to New York City in 1947. He was hired by the Caltex Oil Company (now Chevron-Texaco) and moved to India, where he spent several years as director of marketing.

From India, he moved to England, where he ran various small businesses before his return to the United States in 1967. Bill began a career with the State of Louisiana in Baton Rouge as a pioneer in the field of computer science. In 1977, Bill accepted a position with the Medical Center in Shreveport, where he served until his retirement in 1988. Bill was a bright, open-mined, and energetic man, perhaps somewhat aloof to those who knew him casually, but remarkably warm to his friends. A voracious reader, Bill enjoyed a lifelong love of the New York Times, and possessed a masterful command of the English language.

He was involved in numerous stage productions in Shreveport through the years, and was an active communicant of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and directed the Youth Group. Bill was a member of the Shreveport Club, the Cambridge Club, the Tarshar Society, and the English Speaking Union. Bill enjoyed good food, dry martinis, and lively political discussions where he delighted in sharing his liberal political positions with those of more conservative persuasion. He traveled extensively, often to New York where he enjoyed the theater.

Each August, he sojourned to Scotland, where he attended the Edinburgh fair. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Carter at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 11 at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Shreveport, LA. Mr.

Carter requested any memorials in his name be donated to St. Matthias. 318-221-7181 THE LARGEST DISPLAY IN THE ARK-LA-TEX! CENTRAL All work done in our plant We know the rules of the cemeteries.
