ENTERTAINMENTTV THE COURIER-NEWS JW FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1996 September 27, 19961 PEOPLE IN THE NEWS The scent of a superstar for only $23 a- the case and eventually granted the visa. Evangelista, who is from Canada, was on her first visit to Taiwan for the launch of the Chinese edition of Vogue. Culkin snubbed for 'Home Alone III' AHHHHHHH! MACAULAY CULKIN is over the hill. Twentieth Century-Fox is looking for a new young star for "Home Alone III," which begins filming Dec. 2 in Chicago.

The makers of the "Home Alone" movies decided that the "slap-on-the-aftershave-scream" that left them rolling in the aisles just wouldn't be that funny with a 16-year-old doing it The movie studio also announced Wednesday that the next sequel will have an entirely new cast. Culkin's parents, PATRICIA BEN-TRUP and KIT CULKIN, have nearly bankrupted themselves in a custody fight over Macaulay and five of his siblings. The actor, worth an estimated $17 million, has said he is willing to dip into his fortune to bail out the family. MICHAEL JORDAN is putting his name on a new cologne, and no, it doesn't smell like sweat socks and BenJay. I The Chicago Bulls superstar teamed up with perfume magnate Bijan to produce the men's fragrance.

Michael Jordan cologne includes the grassy smell of a golf course, a hint of pine to evoke his home in North Carolina, and a leather scent to recall Jordan's two-year stint in minor- league baseball. 1 Jordan, his wife, JU ANITA, and their three children helped design the i cologne by sampling scores of scents. It goes on sale in November. No charges were filed, but witnesses claimed the shooter was one of Combs' bodyguards. Knight made no public comment, but The New York Times quoted an unnamed associate who promised that Knight would "settle the beef his way. On the street." Fact or fiction It's difficult to say which is more disturbing that such stories exist, or that they seem so widely believed. Factor in additional details, such as an alleged personal beef between Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., Combs' star performer, or rumors that Knight was about to invade Combs' turf by establishing an office for Death Row East in New York, and it's hard not to wonder if people aren't taking that "Godfather" stuff a tad too literally. Ironically, these rumors of an East CoastWest Coast war arrive just as Dr.

Dre having extricated himself from the Death Row machine earlier this year has hit the airwaves with "East CoastWest Coast Killas." Credited to "Group Therapy" and featuring such stars as KRS-1 and Cypress Hill, the single argues that the EastWest rivalry is killing rap, figuratively if not literally. If the hip-hop nation doesn't stop squabbling among itself, the tune warns, it will be all-too-easy for its enemies to stop the music altogether. A way of life Timely as this message is, it seems unlikely that rap will ever be able to erase such rivalries entirely. After all, competition always has been a part of hip-hop culture. In the 70s, Zulu Nation sponsored "battles" in which rival MCs would spar verbally; in the '80s, defined the notion of "hard core" with the eloquently dismissive "Sucker M.C's." Nor is such competitiveness unique to rap.

Jazz has a tradition of "cutting contests" that dates back more than half a century. Reggae has battling sound systems, bluegrass has fiddle showdowns, and Irish traditional music has annual cieili contests. Even classical music has its own well-publicized competitions. It's the extra-musical aspects of this rivalry that worry. Settling a rivalry with rhymes on a stage is one thing, settling a beef with guns on the street quite another.

And while it would be nice to think that some of this will be settled soon, one suspects that we haven't heard the end of this yet. TV BEST BETS tojtgh and living large, playing off ghet- to stereotypes and suburban fears to come on like the baddest beings ever to walk into a recording studio. Sure, some gangsta rappers origi-! nally were gangbangers. Eric "Eazy-! Wright admitted to having pimped and dealt drugs before turning to the music business, and Ice-T has alluded to even darker doings during his youth- fid gang period. But gang life wasn't a part of their rap career; it was just an image, and an attractive one at that.

Because unlike real hoods, gangsta rappers used violence not to intimidate enemies, but to attract fans. Or so it seemed. But since the death of Tupac Shakur from injuries received during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on Sept. 6, some have begun I to wonder just how much of an act the gangsta ethos really is. Living the life Shakur, who was known as 2Pac in i the rap world, was no stranger to vio-" lence.

He'd been arrested in connection with shootings in 1992 and '93 (though charges were later dropped), and in later served time for simple assault (he got 15 days in jail for beating "Menace II Society" director Allen Hughes) and battery (he was sentenced to 4 12 years in prison, but was released on appeal after eight months). early, he didn't just talk the talk. But there was something different about the shooting that eventually took his life. Although police are said to be investigating reports that the incident stemmed from a scuffle Shakur and his crew got into earlier that evening, the shooting seemed too professional merely to have been the work of a cou- pie aggrieved toughs. Not only were the assailants able to pick, out which vehicle in the 15-car convoy Shakur was traveling in, but ttiey" apparently used assault rifles to shoot through the car door, thus ensuring they'd hit their man even if he ducked down.

Tellingly, Death Row CJEO Marion "Suge" Knight, though sitting next to Shakur and, at 6-foot-4, a I sizable target in his own right, was only grazed. Naturally, the fans have their own theories. Spend time talking to rap enthusiasts, either on line or in the real world, and you'll hear endless variations on the same rumor: that Shakur File photo Tupac Shakur, who had many brushes with violence, died this past week after being gunned down in what many claim to be an East CoastWest Coast rap-music war. was taken out, that the shooting wasn't a random incident but part of an East CoastWest Coast rap war. None of it is verifiable, of course, but that doesn't make it especially implausible.

Particularly not if you look at some of the history of Death Row Records. 'Don' Knight From the first, Knight made himself known as a tough negotiator. But where others in the record industry cut deals like Michael Milken, Knight came on more like Michael Corleone. When Knight started Death Row, he wanted producer Andre "Dr. Dre" Young as his partner; trouble was, Dr.

Dre was at that time under contract to Eazy-E's label, Ruthless Records. So Knight negotiated Dr. Dre's release. And, according to court documents, he did so by turning up at Ruthless with a couple of his crew and several baseball bats. It was not baseball season.

"I know you've heard all the stories," Knight later told Lynn Hirschberg of The New York Times Magazine. "But you have to realize one thing: results." Far more disturbing and possibly more pertinent are the stories of bad blood between Knight and Sean "Puffy" Combs, the president of rival rap label Bad Boy Records.
