"It's very much my vision of hell," the director says. "We never know why they're in there or how they got there. So they can only concentrate on the practical world of escape and they find their own internal demons are far more dangerous than the physical dangers." While some of the dialogue is cliched and sections move too slowly, there are exchanges between characters that are wonderfully fraught with nerves.

Wint, who plays a take-charge cop named Quentin, gets into an argument with Guadagni, who plays a paranoid, anti-establishment doctor named Holloway. They argue about the purpose of the intricate prison they're in. "Only the government could have built something this ugly," she spits at him. According to the director, technical problems abounded such as trying to squeeze a crew of 30 into a small room with the cast of six. "The film was about six people going crazy, but with that many people, it became a weird fusion between sci-fi and the guerrilla-style approach to filmmaking," Natali says.
