'Our Miss Brooks' Actress Seems Headed For Stage Stardom Jf Gloria McMillan, who plays' an effervescent hcIioo! girl on CHS' "Our Miss Brooks heard over KWKH and KWKH-FM every Sun day night at 8:30. starring Eve Ar- den, sounds perfectly natural in the part, there's good reason for it. Gloria Is a school girl: at sweet sixteen she's a junior student at Westlake School for Girls.

For this, and couple of other reasons. Gloria is one of Hollywood's busiest young ladies. She attends school seven hours each day and vet has found time to rstafc bllsh a career for herself as an accomplished actress. And. as though thi3 weren enough, she studies three arts outside her radio work.

Being busy is second nature to Gloria. When she was four years old Gloria was a blues singer, spotted regularly on a Portland, radio station. Two and a half years of singing, ad-libbing dialogue and dancing on kid shows several times each week gave Gloria two advantages which have been paying off ever since. She developed theatrical talent, and lost the self-consciousness which is the plague of many child stars. When Gloria was seven (she was born in Portland.

on March 13. 1033) the family moved to Hollywood and Gloria became part of the local radio This time, how ever, she concentrated on me dramatic side. "Big Town" was her first dramatic show; she followed with a regular assignment on "Mayor of the Town," a role which she played for seven years. Gloria Js a member of the "500 Club," a group of Juvenile radio players, all under 17, who have appeared on 500 or more transcontinental broadcasts. The club was organized to help raise funds for worthy causes.

This year their performances are filling the coffers for the Sister Kenny Foundation. They stage variety performances in which each of the talented per- formers do one or (several acls en tirely apart, from their radio Mint. Gloria herself is featured in three acts at the piano, in a jitterbug routine and in a comedy sketch. She began study of piano more than I five years ago and today takes instructions from Amparo Iturbi, Jose's talented sister. She conscientiously fits four hours of practice into each day's activities; as much of it as is possible before breakfast and leaving for school.

Singing and dancing lessons slso occupy the "spare" time of this slender, blue-eyed, golden-haired lass. But none of these fields is meant to be an end in itself. Gloria's ambition is to be a Broadway actress. She has played with the Pasadena Community Playhouse, and was featured with tlie La Jolla Players in "Dear Ruth." As soon as Gloria graduates from higli school, she and her mother plan to go to London where Gloria can study with the Old Vic and Royal Conservatory Players. Then she hopes for a chance to study with the Abbey Players in Ireland.

From that point on, Gloria will be Broadw -ay-bound. She was interviewed by Bernard Strauss, producer of "Love or Money." last fall. He decided she was too young to make love to John Loder in that play but definitely promised that he'd get her for feroadwsy som day. SUNDAY i 5 .3 V-- Adyntures bn ve of v. HKMIV Narlh Amsrlran Nswuaaprr Alltanre Washington. Discovery of approximately 5.000 miles of hitherto unknown Arctic territory, one of the largest additions to the land surface of the globe made in this generation, has just been reported to the Arctic Institute of North America. The new land is a great island in the Fox basin, lying between Baffin Land and the Melville peninsula of northern Canada.

The discovery was made by Royal Canadian Air Force observers based at Fro-bisher Bay in southern Baffin Land. The land was first wrn through a rift in clouds. The navigator assumed that lie had miscalculated his position and that he actually was over the coast of Baffin Land. A later check, however, proved that he actually had been over an unknown island, about 5 by 75 miles in area. It since has been photographed from the air but nobody yet has set foot on its shore.

It can now be recalled. Arctic Institute experts say. that the existence of some such land long has been predicted from the direction of ice drifts in the Foxe basin but nobody has taken the trouble to look for it. Presumably the island wil be found completely desolate, without human inhabitants, and probably covered with ice much of the year. It will be an addition to Canadian territory.

This comes not alone from discovery rights but from the fact that it is completely surrounded by Canadian isiands and the dominion has a valid claim to all territory between its northern borders and the North Pole. This may be the last significant Arctic territorial discovery. Particularly since the start of e.plora-tion from the air is it. unlikely that anything other than a few-insignificant islands will be added to th world map in this region. 6-m Ns-undr Morn- World Favortt 3" r'm New Tvrr Call of th Cro 41 Ruflr Qjiilfl C'il of the Cro 7 Nm Cvlrv netist b'w Sun-Uo Serenade Hear Pirn.
