High School Athletics 2C TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2004 THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com ID FEASTERMANSFIELD HIGH SCHOOL "It's kind of a shame that Caddo Parish hasn't made a move to build stadiums and tracks and weight rooms to support the athletic programs in this parish, especially when all research shows athletes make better grades, get in trouble less and are more likely to be successful after graduation." Huntington Class 4A I.John Curtis 1 By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com The record on the field may not lead fans to consider Homer one of the top high school football teams in the area, and, for most of the season, that may have been true.

But Homer coach Glen Kyle is hopeful the return of some players to the lineup particularly on the offensive line will help the Pelicans get back on the winning track for the rest of 2004. That would be good news for the Homer backfield which is producing big yards even with a handful of youngsters starting on the offensive line in front of them. Greg Nelson and Rashid Young have remained among the area rushing leaders. "We're not winning a whole lot of games, but they're our go-to guys," Kyle said. "There our most dependable ones on Friday nighL" Nelson has carried the ball 82 times this season for 811 yards, an average of 9.9 yards a carry.

"Both of them are just hard-nosed runners," Kyle said. They run downhill really well. They're just both big muscled-up kids and really hard to tackle. "Speed and power is their game. Both of them have good hands, too." The two are sprinters for the Homer track team as well, though Young battled hamstring injuries last spring.

Nelson runs a 10.fsecond 10fmeter dash. Yet, the Pelicans are 1-5 rJiis season. Injuries have been the story for the team, including a devastating Haynesville game that cost them three starters on the offensive line, Center Jim Hankins was one of those lost when he dislocated his hip. He is expected to play against North Caddo on Friday. "He's not going to be 100 percent, but he's going to play," Kyle said.

More healthy players could be on the way, and the Pelicans can use any available help as they fight to return to the Class 2A playoffs. 2. Bastrop 3. Neville 4. Northside 5.

We'd be, you could say, in the driver's seat We would control our own destiny." Minden Tide coach David Feaster dished out some praise to a Shreveport athlete on Saturday after his team beat Woodlawn 13-12 on a muddy field at Lee Hedges Stadium. Feaster said strategy changes in a mud game, including the strategy on whether to go for fourth-down conversions. "Part of the thinking is, don't let number eight (Kendeoun Netter of Woodlawn) defeat you on punt returns," Feaster said. "He's the best been practicing the offense." As for the 26-20 loss, Held said die only thing that has changed for the Tigers is the loss of the chance for an unbeaten season. He predicted no team wovdd go unbeaten in District 3-1A play.

Logansport Coach Durrett Woods is hoping his Tigers are in die Uiick of die District 3-1A race tliis season, and four wins in a row seem to indicate Oiey will be. He credits die defense widi much of die success. "Our defense, right now, is probably playing as well as it has die last few years," Woods said. "Our offense is mixing it up well, but I guess our biggest improvement is on defense." athlete on the field, and he may be the best in the district" St. Maty Quarterback Bryan Stamey suffered a broken collarbone on Friday in (lie Tigers' first loss, and his season is over.

Went Mullikin and Patrick Johnson, who finished Friday's game against Northwood Lena, will handle the job. "We'll start one and well probably use both of diem in different situations," coach Eric Held said. 'They botii got equal reps today (at practice); Mullikin was die starter last season, and Held expects his team to survive. "Both of diose guys have been practicing at tliat position since die spring," he said. "Luckily, they've Class 1A Lumberjacks coach Benny Reeder said someone told him the team's pre-district schedule that included Benton, Bossier, Haynesville and Minden was "a BCS schedule." District 1-2A play has arrived, however, and Springliill is off to a 1-0 start after a 26-12 win over Lakeside.

The Warriors impressed Reeder. "That's the best Lakeside team we've played since they've been playing," he said. "I just think they're lacking manpower as far as numbers. I think they've got seven or eight kids that have to go both ways." Loyola is up next for Springhill, and die Flyers present a new challenge, but they bring a great reward. "We've played nobody dial's even 1.
