4C SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2004 THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com High School Football: Week 5 BOSSIER 56, SPRINGHILL nn 21 'mi. A A A Jones, Minden rush past Green Oaks By Mark Barnard Special to The Times MINDEN Oh, what a difference one year makes for Minden. Last season, the Crimson Tide couldn't buy a win if they'd held a winning Power Ball ticket Coach David team doesn't need any lottery tickets this season but if Minden did, the Power Ball number would have to be Kay Jones's No. 4. The junior running back rushed for 253 yards on 16 carries and scored on runs of 62, 91, and 9 yards, fading Minden to a 36-21 victory over Green Oaks on Friday night at Tide Stadium.

Jones now has 13 touchdowns this season, including two scoring runs of 90-plus yards. Brandon Walker also rushed for over 100 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as die Crimson Tide won its fourth consecutive game, improving to 4-1. ii tiiink our kids wore them down Logansport slips by North Caddo 0 Tigers stymie Rebels', running attack, finally capitalize offensively. By Roy Lang III rflanggannett.com LOGANSPORT Time after time, the Logansport Tigers knocked on the door Friday night, but for the most part, the stingy, athletic North Caddo defense just wouldn't give in. That is until the Tigers' persistence paid off with the go-ahead touchdown in the final two minutes of the ball game, sending the home crowd 'into a frenzy and Logansport to victory.

Even though they had doubled up North Caddo in total yardage, the Tigers still trailed late until Cordero McDaniel hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass with 1:46 remaining to give the District 3-1A Logansport a 16-12 victory over the 1-2A Rebels. "I was wide open," an extremely jubilant McDaniel said. "We had to go do it, so we went and did it." After a pass interference call in the end zone gave the Tigers (3-2) 0 fk Mmm fy i i'ji" wmipiiwuii im Callie ReametThe Times the board with a 83-yard drive on 10 plays. Jemarcus Robinson dashed around right end for three yards to cut the margin to 14-7. George's 3-yard TD run made it 21-7 Bossier, but the man of the night for Springhill was D'Antonio Minis.

The bullish sophomore sprinted 54 yards for the 'Jacks second touchdown. Mims, who had 163 yards rushing by halftime, finished the night with 258 yards on a workhorse 26 carries. "He's a fine player," Springhill coach Benny Reeder said of Mims. "But I was pleased with the whole offense." Rosepine (3-2) took over from there, running off 32 points in a row. CEDAR CREEK 55, COTTON VALLEY 0: The Cougars won their fourth in four games, this time on the road.

Jake Watts ran for 105 yards and Chris Kozik added 103, but it was the defense tiiat shone. Cedar Creek held Cotton Valley to minus-13 yards on die ground. DELTA 44, CALVARY 7: The Cavs went down hard on the road. Calvary scored to start the game on a 1-yard run by Zach Edmonds, but it was all Delta from there as the Cavs dropped to 2-3. Alan Rogers passed for just 93 yards.

Justin Poole again led the Calvary receivers with four receptions for 82 yards. CLAIBORNE 13, GRAWOOD 6: At Keithville, the Rebels claimed a brawl-shortened victory. Claudel Bell's 54-yard touchdown run was the game-winner. Bossier's Weldon Brown (35) rolls toward the end zone en route to an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Bossier's 56-21 win over Springhill. Brown stakes Bossier to early lead in rout of Lumberjacks "Weldon showed you why he's the back he is," Bossier Coach Billy Don McHalffey said.

"We challenged them at halftime and they responded." With Bossier owning a 2-14 halftime lead, the Bearkats delighted the homecoming crowd with 28 points in less than four minutes to start the third quarter. Thanks to a fum Brown ble recovery by Pat Marshall on the Springhill 24, Bossier needed just four plays with the ball at North Caddo's 23 yard line, McDaniel got behind the Rebels (3-2) defense while Logansport quarterback Dominic Jenkins rolled to his right with the football tightly hid Wilson den against his hip. Unlike two red-zone possessions which ended in interceptions, Jenkins threw a strike to his tight end. This time, the North Caddo stars didn't have the energy to avoid disaster. "What we usually find late in the game is that we have a lot of guys going both ways.

They get tired," North Caddo head coach Jerry Byrd said. "Mentally we have to stay strong. We'll probably find it was a technique issue." The win still didn't come easy for Itgansport after McDaniel's score. The Rebels got great field position their own 48 after the Tigers' kick sailed out of bounds. A pass interference on the first play of the drive moved the ball to the Logansport 39-yard line, and three plays later the Rebels faced fourth-and-8 from the 37 with 1:21 to go.

After running back Devin Washington accepted a handoff, he rolled to his left and let go a pass intended for Jeremy Moore in the end zone. Even though Moore was triple-covered, the ball found his hands, but bounced around and innocently fell to the ground. "We kept fighting back and it paid off," Woods said. "We lost one against Loyola earlier this year with about the same situation." The reason the Rebels defense may have been tired on Logansport's final drive was the fact it was suffering the effects of what the versatile Logansport offense accomplished all night. Running back Steven Wilson led the Tigers on the ground with 27 carries for 151 yards.

Most of his work was done in three quarters as an injury left him hobbled late in the game. Jenkins was explosive through the air, completing 10-of-19 for 148 yards and the Tigers' two touchdowns. Only the two picks kept this one close. "We've had problems in our first couple games getting the ball in the end zone," Logansport head coach Durrett Woods said. "We tried to correct it.

That's definitely what we're going to work on this week. In the first half, we had our chance to score every time we touched the ball, but we couldn't execute in the red zone." Our kids are well-conditioned, and it's great to get anodier win like this." Minden took the opening drive and Jones marched 75 yards in seven plays, capped by Walker' 4-yard touchdown run that made it 7-0 with 8: 51 showing in the first quarter.

Walker had four carries for 66 yards during the drive. The Crimson Tide actually made the game closer than it should have been. Minden had possession tliree times inside the Giants 4-yard-line in the first half, but came away with notiiing. The most costly mistake came midway tlirough the second quarter when Jones fumbled a pitch at the Green Oaks 4-yard-line. Jamario Cooper made the recovery for Green Oaks, and that began a 6-play, 87-yard drive tiiat ended on L'Courtney Washington's one-yard touchdown run that brought the Giants to within 9-6 with 4:34 showing in the second quarter.

Leland Kelly's 48-yard pass to Washington to the Minden 15-yard-line was the key play in the drive. Mansfield crushes North DeSoto By Darren Jackson Special to The Times MANSFIELD North DeSoto's Cedric Hooks took die opening kickoff 69 yards for a touchdown here Friday night It was the last time the Griffins would celebrate as the Mansfield Wolverines dominated North DeSoto, 47-7. "Mansfield has got a big football team," North DeSoto coach Gary Smith said. "And (Mansfield coach) Donald Maywcatiier does a great job. We're climbing to the mountaintop and well get diere soon." With the bss, Nortii DeSoto drops 0-5.

Mansfield improves to 3-2 with die victory. Mansfield took advantage of several Nortii DeSoto miscues in taking die victory.
