Telephone Plainfield 6-8000 LAIKFIEIU, N. COURIER-NEWS, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 19U Paper Clips to Be Rationed In 1942, Reporter Learns Here ELECTION DAY EVENj plastic. Instead, the bottles will be of glass. ine second letter was from a pencil manufacturer. Uncle Sam forbids the company to put brass tips on lead pencils after Jan.

1, 1 The Seasoti Outstanding By JACK MEHL "Don't be a paper-clip bender," may be one of the slogans we citizens will be adopting in connection with a successful national defense program. Already, dealers have been advieed that in 1942 paper clips will be rationed to customers according to the number received by them in 1941. This was learned during a brief tour a Courier-News reporter made in the business district to learn how shortages are affecting the average business man who doesn't deal in the machinery line, a type cf industry everyone knows is being hurt by priorities. Spools Are Valuable A stationer gave out some other interesting information besides the item on paper clips. Those little spools on which your camera film is wrapped are now valuable.

Formerly, film developers cast them into the junk heap, but big film manufacturers now supply cartons in which to place them for shipment back to the manufacturer. Cheap grades of paper handled by stationers have doubled in price. A certain type of paper rolls for which the stationer paid $3.75 are now costing $7.50. Chief reason for this rise is shortage of chlorine, the chemical used to bleach paper. And who would believe there is a shortage of slide rules? It seems that good slide rules are made cf wood aged for at least three years.

That wood has been used up and FUR RIMME 1942, read the letter. Manufacturers are discontinuing cheaper model typewriters, particularly in the portable style, he explained. Because of the steel shortage, manufacturers are putting their material into the higher-priced machines which yield them the biggest monetary return, he said. A jeweler revealed that slowly developing is a shortage of clocks. Brass is an important item in their manufacture, he said, and clock makers are not getting very much of this material.

A nationally-known watch manufacturer notified this jeweler last week that hereafter his products will no longer come in fancy colored plastic boxes. In future, paper and cardboard boxes will have to be sufficient. Said this jeweler, "There is a shortage in small diamonds. That's because small diamonds, for the most part, were cut in Europe. Americaps are only just learning this art and until they get into production, there is bound to be a continuing shortage of he item." Furriers, too, are complaining.

The situation in the Pacific has had a great deal to do with shortages in their line. It seems that in this country there is a big demand for Japanese mink and Chinese for misses for women for juniors the current production of slide rules can't begin to meet the demand. Drawing instruments are as scarce as the proverbial he.i's teeth. The vast majority of these were made abroad and cannot now be obtained at home. American factories are turning out small quantities of them but the production barely meets the needs of the 17.

S. government itself. Two letters received by the stationer within the last week were shown this reporter. One was from a nationally-known ink manufacturer. It announced with regret that a certain line of ink containers will no longer be made of ft vts here are top notch style candidates with an economy ticket for kid.

Another important fur import was Russian squirrel. All these items have been very slow in coming to the United States. Prices Have Risen Consequently, said the furrier, prices on domestic furs have risen tremendously. American muskrat now costs 50 per cent more than it did formerly. "Even the cost of cleaning furs has increased to the dealer," said a Watchung furrier.

"A certain chemical used in the process has risen from 95 cents a gallon to S3 a gallon and the manufacturers say the end is nowhere in sight." And so it goes, each business, no matter what the line may be, is apparently affected by the shortages caused by our national defense effort. A Park Ave. garage had a salesman stop in the other day to deliver 12 cans of a rust-remover. He explained he is now making deliveries with his car because the company can no longer purchase boxes in which to transport the goods. And at a South Ave.
