Chemicals boosted the stoclt market out of a narrow range today sending average prices slightly higher. A late up trend started when Du Pont jumped nearly nine points and closed up 8 18 at 179 34. Subject to stockholders approval at a meeting April 11. the spilt will be-j come effective about June 1. At th? same time Allied Chemical, gained 4 12 at 179, on the possible: theory that it was in the high price range where splits arc logical.

The Associated Pres average ef 60 stocks gained .2 of a point at 64.3, the best rise in more than a week. The industrial component was up .6 of r. point, and rails and utilities were unchanged. The volume of trading was comparatively low at shares. Of the 1,039 issues appearing 011 the qutation tape.

343 advanced and 417 declined. Many of the leading industrial issues were among those advancing, and this was reflected in the averages. There were 57 new lows for the year reacned, and one Issue made a new high. Bond3 were quiet and narrow with i selected rails and utilities ahead. cents a bale lower. Poor demand for cotton textiles. coupled with uncertainty over farm legislation and further ECA spending for cotton restricted trading. The census bureau report placed ginnings of the 1948 cotton crop to Dec. 13 at 13.391,401 running bales and was in line with expectations.

The ginnings to date represented almost 92 per cent of the prospective crop and were on a par with the proportions ginned for the same period in the two previous years. Private advices said that Brazilian official statistics revealed that 1.216,-385 bales of cotton were classified there for export in the period Jan. 1 tr Jan. 9, while exports in the port of Santos from Jan. 1 to 30 were 1,193,150 bales.

Dealers here said that the figures indicated that Brazil had only Rome bales of cotton still to be exported and that Brazil will be out of the market as an export factor until July of next year when new crop supplies become available. Real Cheer The definition of real Christmas cheer might be the occurence that took place at the W. B. TUCKER home, 3461 Broadmoor boulevard last night. The choir from the First Baptist church, 75 members in all, visited the TUCKER home and sang Christmas carols to Mr. TUCKER, who has been an Invalid for two years.

In return, Mrs. TUCKER invited all the members into her home and served them fruit cake. The cakes were being saved for Christmas, but "their kindness certainly called for something in return," Mrs. TUCKER eaid. Choir members visited other Shreveport homes last night and sang carols to others who are eick.

20 Testing was reported underway today at Arkansas Gas company's Cromer unit No. 3 Peacock survey. In the Rodessa field in Marion county. Last repot' operator wa.i drilling cement plug Hole was bottom-d at 8.700 feet. Among the firm's other tens in Marion county, the Walker unit No.

2 Duvalt survey was reported drilling ahead below 4.093 feet. The- newly-located C. C. Braden unit No. 3 A.

Richardson survey, was listed as 467 feet from west and south lines of survey about 600 feet southwest from the No. 1 Braden A. Gloyd producer. The new test will go below the 8.000 foot mark. Also testing in Arkansas Fuel Oil company's A-l Grace Hag gard Barnes, Usury survey, which was at last reports swabbing wash waier after acidizing with 1,000 gallons a 6.580 feet.

In the southwest corner of the Whelan field, Harleton are of Harrison county. Placid Oil company, la re ported testing at 7,581 feet in the No. 1 Katherine Bosch. Plans re portedly are to drill on to 8.000. Recording of oil and gas leases had slowed down over the weekend h'te but had overtones of recent bloc 'filings.

C. M. Pipe, of Taylor filed additional instruments covering in terest in a 117 12 acre tract in the W. C. Crawford survey, in the Halls- ville area.

E. B. Scale of Dallas filed leases covering 318 acres in the E. A. Merchant survey.

Rancho Oil company i reported to have assumed obligation from G. I. Moore to drill a Paluxy tet in Wood county two miles northern of golden. Tentative location has been marked on the 75-acre Lankford tract in the L. Johnson survey, th site is about a mile and a half north of an old deep well drilled by Deep Rock Oil company.

Tom Worsham, for account of J. C. Hawkins of Dallas is reported taking a spread of leases around the Sam Houston survey near Cecar Lake in Wood. A. O.

Phillips of Dallas has spudded ja new Paluxy wildcat in the birth right area of Hopkins county as the No. 1 Loeson on a 20 acre tract in the J. M. Spencer survey. Location one mile northwest of the Vaugnn and Jackson No.

1 Paee a recent wildcat failure attempting to establish production along the Talco-Mexia fault. Seward Hunt is attempting to interest lease owners in the drilling of a Paluxy wildcat Just north of Llndale in Smith county. He Is asking companies for aid in a teat to be located on the 65-acre Brewster lease in the Sanders survey. Texas Completes 179 Producers of Crude Austin, Texas, Dec. 20 F) Texas had 179 oil well completions last week to boost the year's total more than 2,000 ahead of completions during last year's comparable period.

This year's completions total 7.599, compared to 5,589 a year ago, the railroad commission reported. There were 20 gas well completions last week, raising the year's total to 692, 70 more than last year's completions for the corresponding period. Last week's activity included 11 oil wildcats and one gas wildcat. Daily crude oil allowable as of Dec. 18 was 2.721.439 barrels, an increase of 8,106 barrels over allowable on Dec.

The contractor has had two rigs running for the operator for the past month. Magnolia has run retest of its No. 1.

Wall and McLeod in the Alex Archer survey, pumped 16.24 barrels of 42.7 gravity with a gas-oil ratio of 2500-1. Top of the pay is 6006, perforations from 6008-31. and total depth 6100. The same operator has made a new test on the No. 7 L.

A. Wilson which pumped 15.86 barrels of 42.1 gravity oil after a 3000-gallon acid treatment of the Gloyd 7one opposite perforations from 5883-95, 60 shots. Top of the pay is 5883. and total depth 5955. The producer is in the Prlncilla Evans survey.

Pure oil is contintiing to work- over old producers in the Van field in Van Zandt county. The operator's No. 12-A Wells 47 In the V. Moore and Mund Gross surveys flowed 33 barrels of 34.4 gravity oil on a 24-hour rerun, with a gas-oil ratio of 2618-1 through a 24 64-lnch choke. Flowing pressures were given as 225 on casing and 50 on tubing.

Flow was through a perperforated liner. Top of the pay is 2650: total depth 2929. Operator asked reduction in allowable trom 44 to 33 barrels per day. The same operator's No. 10 Neill 66 in the James Rose survey, pumped 27.5 barrels of 34 5 gravity oil on rerun through pre-perforated liner.

Top of pay is total depth 3016. Proration schedule readjustment is asked for an increase from 15 to 28 barrels daily. Operator has retested the H. D. MacDonald et al No.

1 Thorn in the Brewer survey, Hawkins townsite well in Wood county, which flowed 26.22 barrels through a 5 64-lnch with a gas-oll ratio of 350-1. Top of the pay is 4554; total depth 4802. El Dorado. Dec. 20 (Special) Title to a part mineral Interest In 200 acres of Union county land is contested In a suit filed in Union chancery court by H. S. Bogan against Homer C.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants are in possession of the mineral rights as the result of tax sales which erred on eight counts. The lands are in sections 28 and 34-18-16w. TEXAS COUPLE IS KOBBED AND TAKEN FOB BIDE BY NEGRO Houston. Texas, Dec. 20 (IP).

A Houston couple today told police a medium-sized negro bandit left them stranded near Richmond after stealing drive-in receipts during a wild pre-dawn ride. Police said they believed the stolen money would amount to "several thousand dollars." Carl L. Lala said the man put a pistol at the back of his wife's head and told him to drive out of Houston. Lala said the robber, whe was wearing a dark suit, first took $375 from his billfold after helping him start his car. which stalled about 1:30 a.m.

He said the man left them stranded in a wooded sector about four miles east of Richmond. Lala said the money consisted of Sunday receipts from three Houston drive-ins. The abandoned car was found In Richmond today, hut the metal boxes containing the money were missing. I New York. Dee.
