Telephone PlaJnfleld 6-800C PLAINFIELD, N. COURIER-NEWS, FRIDAY, JULY 25, 1941 PAGE SIXTEEN for 2nd Place "Battle Twilight League Has THRU SPORTSLAND with GENE F. HAMPSON Dunellen Democrats Gain Runnerup Spot, Downing Sports Center Nine, 7 to 5 The way the Middlesex Tigers lapped the field and put the championship away well before the end of the season, Twilight League fans never did get to eee a fight for the title. Now it appears they may be treated to a battle that may well make up for the lack of a real pennant race. Four teams the Sports Center, Dunellen Democrats, the Bound Brook Indians and the Middlebrooks are running neck-and-neck in ajbid for second place, and it may be that the tussle will exist right down to the Action of Tom Walsh, national president of the Professional Golfers' Association, to ban bookmaking at major golf tournaments is a step in the right direction.

Walsh points out that baseball had to hire a national commissioner to govern the sport when the gamblers stepped In and the PGA is out to see nothing like this happens to golf. During the recent Chicago Open, an open book was conducted-at the ninth green on the chances of the players with PGA officials especially upset over a prominently placed sign advertising, "Place Bets Here." Needless to say there is an opportunity for all types of abuses If this practice were permitted to continue. In the past, and often in New Jersey, it has been the custom of some clubs sponsoring tournaments to conduct a Calcutta Sweepstakes to provide funds to increase the tourney purse. This practice likely will be allowed to continue for it is a far cry from open betting and in the past has made it possible for clubs to make state and sectional events more attractive to links stars. Reports have it that Tony Marino, local sportsman.

Is eyeing the midget auto racing sport and there is a possibility that he may buy a race car. In fact rumor has it that genial Tony alrready has his eye on a car and that machine happens to be the canary colored No. 3 outboard driven by diminutive Johnny Hitter of Detroit but wants Ritter along as chauffeur of the car. Jim Fraley. Scotch Plains High football coach, is said to be one of two leading contenders for the position of grid coach at Ridgefield Park Hieh School.

Ed Danowski. pro star, has dropped out of the running final week. The Democrats went into a temporary lead Thursday night; coming from behind with three runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Sports, 7 to 5, in the opening game of a two-night serie between the two teams. They meet again tonight in Green Brook Park in a game postponed fronearlier in the season. lor the position but Bill Dorsey of Powhatan, Ohio is Fraleys leading Turns Pro Following a highly tuccetsful career at an amateur, Al Mea'of New Providence hat 'decided to join the rankt of profetsional boxers.

I. Fritzie Zivic Confident He Will Knock Out Red Cochrane Newark (JPi Fritzie Zivic will be shooting to extend a Newark knock- I out string when he defends his welterweight crown against Freddie I (Red) Cochran Monday night at Ruppert It will be the sixth appearance of the Pittsburgh scrapper in this city. His five other battles saw him a victor by knockouts, and he is confident that his first fight here since winninir the title will not be the one to break the streak. Fritzie predicted a knockout af- ter he slammed a light punching has from its moorings in Marsillo's gym. That wa sa victory omen, he said.

"Every time I knock the bag loose." Fritzie. said, "it means that I'm going to win by a kayo. It never fails. It happened while I was training for both fights with Al Davis. You know what happened.

I snapped one loose while training for the second Armstrong fight and I finished him in the 12th. Thae same thing happened in Minneapolis. It topped off and I kayoed Dick Demaree in the fourth. That's why I'm sure Fm going to kayo Cochrane-" The champion added he would try to halt Cochrane as quickly as possible. "If I can find an opening," he said, Tm going to drill in for a one-round kayo." Cochrane's camp, however, was not worried bv the Zivic Prediction.

Lightweight Champion Lew Jen kins watched the Elizabeth fighter work out and said Cochrane had "the stuff to beat Fritzie Zivic and I wouldn't be surprised if he Is the next welterweight champion." He explained, "Red has shown me that he's a good body puncher. That's why he has a better chance than most critics figure. I fought a draw with Zivic in the Garden last winter and body blows earned me those points. Fritzie is plenty good but he can be staken. Right now Red looks as if he might do it" rival.

Fraley has had two great seasons at Scotch Plains High. Ben Cantor tells us that one of the Mt. Vernon backers of Teddy Wlnt, young heavyweight, who traveled with Wint to Newark for Monday nights bout with Wallace Cross was Joe Santore, former professional of the Watchung Valley Country Club. Mt Vernon Is the home of the big links star who asked Cantor about many of Els local friends. Freddie Cochrane, Elizabeth scrapper, who meets Fritzie Zivic for the world's welterweight title on Monday night in Newark, is a product of the old Adelphia club in Elizabeth which was one of the most sensationally successful clubs in the state's fistic He is probably the last of the "cards" developed by the club still in action and certainly the most successful although Georgie Forrester gained some attention In middleweight ranks.

Next outdoor boxing show in New Brunswick will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6 with Charlie Rausch of Trenton listed to appear In the eight-round main event. Beans Palmer, local Negro heavyweight, is scheduled to box In one of the six-round bouts and another six-rounder will bring into action Frankie Archie of Raritan. Among the young men inducted into the Army with the Somerset County delegation on Wednesday is William Downs Jenkins, former Bound Brook High School runner who won state interscholastic laurels and then went on to become an outstanding competitor in the AAU and intercollegiate ranks. He held several state titles while active.

Lack of tennis interest locally which resulted in the cancellation of five divisions of the city championships is quite prevalent throughout the country. F. S. Mathewson, county recreation director, informs us that there is plenty of open time at the Warinanco Park courts for the first time in some seasons. Fact that many stars have been inducted into the Army is given as one reason.

Rally to Win Apparently going down to defeat Pop Tuhase's Dunellen team were trailing, 5 to 4, in the fourth, and Jimmy Norrls has, already retired two men. One of them, Ray Ap-gar, was the victim of a beautiful bare-hand catch by first-baseman Kenny Hess. Right at this moment, Hess wa the Sports shining light. But on the very next play, he gave th Democrats a life, and they went on to score three runs and win the game. Charlie Tuhase hit a roller to the infield, and the throw had him by 25 feet, until Hess muffed it and Tuhase was safe.

Presented with an opening, the Democrats' quickly scored the runs they needed for victory. Johnny Skripko hammered a single through the box, and when Al Omert duplicated with a single to center, Yuhasa and Skripko both came home. Then Catcher Jake Kinney tried to pick Omert off second base, but his throw went into center field and through center-fielder Si Monforte and Omert came all the way In. Walks Six It looked like the Democrats game from the beginning. They pounded four hits through a wide open infield for three runs in tha first.

Then two Sports errors and singles by Omert and Frederick brought home two more In tha third. Omert's lack of control kept him, in hot water most of the night. He had runners on in practically ever inning by walks. Nick Medrococ-tis' double, walks to Mickey Foley, Ray Pope and a fielder's choice scored two runs in the second. Then in the fourth, singles by Pope and Norris, an error and Medroc octis' towering fly to center field brought home three more.

In the fifth, Omert walked Foley anc Pope, bringing his total to six, but managed to get the side out with out damage. Darkness then cuf the game short. Lineups. Locals return to tneir jeaguo schedule on Sunday when they entertain the Roselle Republicans in the local park. The Oilers, pick of a hardy group of workmen building a pipe line from Pennsylvania through New Jersey, are a proven combine with the records of the New Jersey eliminations for the National Semi-Pro Congress being evidence enough. Tuscarora aggregation waded through a select field to reach the finals In Ab Hermann's state tournament last season only to be turned back in the championship final bv the well known Albrights of Trenton.

The score was 5 to 4. Playing some of the better semi-pro outfits of New Jersey and Pennsvlvania last season, the Oilers turned in the enviable record of 52 victories in 59 starts. Team has suffered to some extent this year through loss of men to the U. S. Army, but the club is on the way to another highly successful campaign.

They are again entered in Semi-Pro tourney and expect to start play in the near future. Starting "hurler will be either Charles Slack or Georre Smith. Slack, a young Trentonite, has hurled four successive shutouts for the Oilers and while Miller's record Is not as sensational, he has been pitching winning ball for the team over a period of three years. Balza Sparks Brookside to 9-4 Victory Just because ha is one of the smallest players In the Three County League, rival pitchers may underestimate Mickey Balza's abilities as a hitter.
