Myers, Fla. 33902. Joe E. Brown BRENTWOOD, Calif. Three masked gunmen who robbed the home of ailing comedian Joe E.

Brown Tuesday apparently were looking for a 40 carat diamond ring that Brown's wife of 54 years had worn to a banquet honoring him last Saturday, police said. They took the ring, said Kathryn Brown, 77, and other jewelry, furs and non-negotiable bonds worth nearly $100,000 after gagging her and two male nurses. Brown, 77, under sedation, slept through the incident and was not bothered by the robbers, who were asked not to disturb him by Mrs. Brown, a spokesman said. The veteran comedian has been ill and in need of assistance for several years.

His ailments are mainly those of old age and a recurring back ailment, one of his nurses said. Police gave this account: The robbers, wearing Beer Firm Plans Tampa Compound For Wild Animals TAMPA IB Anheuser-Busch Inc. said Monday it plans to build a vast compound featuring wild animals in their native surroundings which will rival in popularity the Disney-world complex being built near Orlando. August A. Busch president of the brewing company, said a preview of the "Boma" exhibit would be unveiled in Tampa June 5.

Busch gave a few details of the complex in Monday's announcement, but he said visitors to the exhibit would be able to pet and feed many of the smaller animals. Anheuser-Busch operates Busch Gardens in Tampa, a display of tropical vegetation and birds the company bills as the most-visited tourist attraction in Florida. JJ a American Day The American Day Com-m i 1 1 aiming at a celebration of patriotism June 6, will meet at 7 p.m. today at the Lee County Commission meeting room. The committee, drawing representatives from about 60 organizations last week, is expected to at least double in representation of area groups tonight. "We only had one garden club represented last week. We would like to see 20 this time," said John Dale, member of the political club coordinating the nonpartisan effort.

Having a representative attend the meeting puts an organization on record as officially supporting American Day, said Dale. The day, at Edison Stadium, is for the purpose of waving the flag and giving people the chance to publicly express patriotism for America. Brown later was able to crawl into the living room where she and the uninjured nurse, Victor Rother, 29, were able to untie each other. Rother called authorities from a neighbor's home. The looters had cut the phone lines. Brown's former home in Bel Air near this Los Angeles suburb also was robbed in 1959, when thieves took more than $17,000 in valuables. Two years later the entire structure burned to the ground, destroying 60 years worth of mementos, trophies and awards, as well as the manuscript of a book the comedian was writing.
