Downer, a Democrat for 36 Downer years, said he believes the GOP gradually has moved toward his viewpoints. "I think the Republican Party became more like Hunt Downer. While working with the Democrats for Bush, I had the pleasure of spending more time with then-Gov. Bush, and I became more familiar with his philosophy and goals.

From Staff Reports By Dan Turner The Times Two high-profile Louisiana Democrats will join the ranks of the Republicans today in a ceremony with President George Bush. State Rep.

Hunt Downer, former speaker of the House, and state Sen. Robert Barham, chairman of the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee, built a rapport with then-candidate Bush while working within the Democrats for Bush organization. "When (Bush) was in Baton Rouge, he said, "Why don't you join the Republican Barham said. "I offhandedly said, 'Well, heck, I'll do that in the White House if you invite And he said, 'Well, maybe we can take care of "And lo and behold, he did invite me." Apparently, a considerable chunk of state residents have felt the need to change parties since the presidential election. About 5,000 state residents have joined the Republican Party since the election, Louisiana Republican Party President Pat Brister said.

pousing the things I believe in family values, constitutional rights and education as the top priority," Barham said. "Beyond that, it's just about a higher standard of conduct, just saying we ought to be about doing the right things when you're in public office." Both Barham and Downer hail from districts where Republicans make up about a quarter of the total number of registered voters. Both men insist they aren't changing political philosophies, just political parties. "People elect candidates. They don't elect parties," Downer said.

"And we need to continue to stress that." Downer wouldn't speculate how the party switch might play into his political plans in 2003 the next round of legislative and statewide elections. "Right now, I'm concentrating on just doing what we've got to do in the Legislature." For Barham, the switch could make campaigns at home easier. "My wife has been a lifelong Republican. And she says she'll feel a lot more comfortable." spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave, It's unclear how both wound up in the bathroom, but witnesses saw both emerge, Hargrave said. The girl was taken to LSU Hospital in Shreveport to be examined.
