"He's got a big upside on him," Mayweather says.

"He could really go play anywhere he wanted to play if he would apply himself. We've got a number of people who would be asking about him if he would go ahead and get tliat (college test) score that he needs to get" Making all of them better is Howard, who has the arm to spread the bafl around the field and the elusiveness to give his receivers time to get open. "I dirow better on the run," Howard says. "We send our running back out to crack down on the defensive end, and I like to roD to that side of the field and make the linebacker make a choice whedier he's going to leave his man and come to me." That man often is Johnson, called the "equalizer" by Mayweather. "He gives us the yardage we need out of the backGeld, and he can catch the ball and make things happen after the catch." Cooper caught an 8-yard scoring pass. -air i. rv 4iM By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com Quail Howard, Sky Jones and Jer-maiiie Jolinson were the names most recognizeable for the Mansfield offense when the 2005 season began. What wasn't known widely was that during the offseason, more players had done the work necessary to put their own names in the spotlight in the coming months.

Hie work has resulted in plenty of passes, plenty of yards and plenty of pouits this season for the Wolverines, now S3 overall and 2-1 in District 1-3A. With Sky Jones spending at least as much time on defense as offense this season, other receivers have gotten their opportunities this falL Among them is Michael Jones, who is the area's leading receiver with 36 receptions for 533 yards. Howard, the Mansfield quarterback in his third year as a starter, says Michael Jones became a part of the team's success during 7-on-7 games and wanted to be more of a part of the regular season. "Last year, Mike was the receiver that didn't have much confidence in himself," Howard says. "During 7-on-7, he was here every day, improving his routes and doing the little tilings he wasn't doing last year.

After we started winning in 7on-7, he wanted to get better." Corderio Young, Jeremy Ford, PJ. Myles. AD have had big moments this season catching the ball. Even Jermaine Johnson, who starts at running back, has unproved his status as a receiver. AD have their strengths, but coach Donald Mayweather doesn't label one as the deep man or another as a possession receiver.

Mansfield's passing game is equal oprxirtunity. Mayweather notices that Howard may tend to focus on one receiver 0RTH DESOTO. Myles (83) is a receiver who can more at times, but he works to eliminate that so opponents don't get a hint as to what's coming or where any one player is headed. "When we're running with trips out there, (Quan) is just looking for the open receiver," Mayweather says. "We run multiple sets and we call different routes. Young may be going on a long route and another kid coming across die middle." Still, they aren't the same player. Mayweather considers Young the most consistent player, even though Michael Jones has bigger numbers.

to catch it, and he can run after die catch." Michael Jones' edge in catches is likely because of his size. "He's a big target, so he's the first one (Quan is) seeing right now," Mayweadier says. Sky Jones is spending more time on defense because of his aggressiveness at tackling, and because that's what he wanted to do. "It was really his thing," Mayweather says. "He wanted to show people that he could play both sides of the ball, but they already know diat he is a receiver." Both Joneses are considered coDege prospects.
