4C SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2005 THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com efense lift High School Football: Week 8 utoirs blockers. Broadway saw the seal and raced down the Evangel sideline for the score. Haynesville never recovered, though the Eagles gave them plenty of opportunities. The Eagles committed three turnovers in the first half two fumbles and one interception but the Golden Tornado couldn't penetrate Evangel's defense. The Golden Tors didn't get beyond their own 41-yard line in the first half and faced a 20-0 halftime deficit.

"Our defense was dominant," Dunn said. "Offensively, without the turnovers, we did some great things." Haynesville's ground game, its offensive strength, played right into under the lights. 'There was a lot of excitement," Haynesville head coach David Franklin said. "We knew what we were in for going into the game and we knew they had to make mistakes and we had to be perfect." Evangel made mistakes, but Haynesville wasn't perfect. The anticipation and the game crashed around one play Broadway's return.

Chase Jennings fielded the kick-off near the goal line. When he approached the 4, he stopped, pivoted and Broadway streaked behind him for the handoff. Haytiesville pursued the play too eagerly and was caught on the wrong side of a wall of Evangel "Our defense was dominant. Offensively, without the turnovers, we did some great things." Dennis Dunn, Evangel coach here." Cars began winding their way off Highway 79 back to Memorial Stadium 90 minutes before kickoff. By kickoff, there was a steady procession of headlights creeping behind the north end zone and toward the field as if they were waiting to find Kevin Costner, Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 White Sox Powell threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another one.

Evangel's Caderrick Tyson led all rushers with 116 yards on 17 carries. Broadway's return was a devastating way to begin a game for the Golden Tornado. This was the game the Golden Tornado and the community yearned for since it was announced Evangel would play in Class 1A. The reclassification renewed a rivalry that had faded since the teams' last meeting in 1996. "Haynesville has a great tradition and a legacy that (former Haynesville coach Red Franklin) has left," Evangel head coach Dennis Dunn said.

"It's an honor for us to play Lions edge Wolverines Evangel defeats Class lA's top-ranked team. By Brian Vernellis bvernellisgannett.com HAYNESYILLE Tie game an entire community anticipated No. 1 Haynesville against No. 3 Evangel began horribly. Evangels Ramon Broadway returned the opening kickoff 96 yards on a reverse, giving the Eagles a game's worth of momentum on one play.

Haynesville couldn't recover from the return and Evangel beat the Golden Tornado, 33-0, on Friday. Evangel quarterback Jordan Benton pounds N. DeSoto Tigers roll up 434 yards total offense in 49-20 victory over Griffins. By Mike Pizzolato Special to The Times STONEWALL The Benton High School Tigers (5-3-1, 2-1) routed the North DeSoto Griffins 49-20 on Friday night. Lambert Tasby, with 93 yards on the night, scored on a 42-yard touchdown, while Aaron Adams rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Josh Simon ran for 66 yards and a 16-yard touchdown. The visiting Tigers rolled up 434 yards total offense and capitalized early on turnovers by North DeSoto (3-5, 0-3), converting an interception, two fumbles and Tasby 's long scoring run into a 28-0 first-quarter lead and an eventual 35-6 halftime lead. Benton took a 42-14 lead into the fourth quarter when backup players took over. "We just wanted to play good, fundamental football," Benton defensive coordinator Caleb Guidry said. "We made a few mistakes, but we took care of our business.

We just VfexV Pj Jennings Evangel's defensive strength. The Golden Tors had minus-13 yards rushing. It left Franklin a frustrated, but proud coach. 'We were very much outmanned, but our kids played hard," Franklin said. "With coaching like they have and the kids they pick and choose they can do that.

Our kids go to school in kindergarten and we have them until the 12th grade and we start over again." Vikings ease past Chiefs By Robby Lockwood Special to The Times It looked like an easy win for Airline on the schedule, but the Vikings had to battle through a mistake-filled contest and escaped with a 17-16 victory over Natchitoches Central on Friday night at Viking Stadium. Derek Leslie split the uprights widi a 25-yard field goal with 1:21 left in the game for difference in the contest. A 22-yard run on a reverse by Georgio Bryant put the Vikings in field goal position to set up Leslie's winning kick. Airline's five turnovers and 103 yards in penalties allowed the Chiefs to hang around before the Vikings scored the late field goal to escape the upset bid by NCHS. The Chiefs had five turnovers of their own as well in the game.

The Vikings (4-2, 3-1) sealed the win when Cordaro Green intercepted a pass with 21 seconds left in the game at the Vikings' 45-yard line. Green also added 136 yards rushing on 20 carries for Airline but did lose two fumbles in the game. NCHS (2-6, 1-4) took advantage of a Vikings turnover to take a 16-14 lead with 8:05 left in the game on a 3-yard touchdown pass from William McElwee to Jared Howard on a fourth-and-goal play. However, Spencer Morgan missed the extra point, which allowed Airline to win the game on the Leslie field goal in the closing minutes of the game. Patrick Berryman set up the score on a 24-yard run on fourth down from the Airline 29-yard line.

The Chiefs cut Airline's lead to 14-10 with 3:04 remaining in the third quarter with a 28-yard field goal by Spencer Morgan. Airline overcame a sloppy first quarter by scoring 14 points in the first 17 seconds of the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead. The Vikings recovered a fumble on the Chiefs 41-yard line before Zach Glass connected with Charlie James on the first play of the second quarter from 21 yards out to give Airline the early lead in the game. Airline came right back to recover a Chiefs fumble on the ensuing kick-off with Cordaro Green reaching the end zone on the next play with a 12-yard touchdown run as the Vikings took a 14-0 lead. The Chiefs came back to put together a long drive and cut the Vikings lead to 14-7 on a 5-yard pass from William McElwee with 4:08 left in the first half.

Broadway OK IA i I Continued from 1C do what we needed to do," Wolverines coach Donald Mayweather said. "We didn't make many mistakes; we just didn't make any plays." While the Lions defense soared, Jeremey Jefferson continued to pile up yards. He finished with 232 on 41 carries with a touchdown. That put him at 1,750 yards for the year. Yet, he wasn't perfect Jefferson fumbled with 58.2 seconds left to give Mansfield one last shot at victory.

Again, the Wolverines failed to outplay the Lions defense. "They stepped up to the occasion," BTW coach Demise Loyd said. "I'm speechless about the way our defense played. They were put in some critical positions." One of the few mistakes for the BTW defenders allowed a 78-yard touchdown pass from Quan Howard to RJ. Myles, but an extra point sailed wide and left the Lions in front by a point with 4:28 to play.

Myles hid behind the Lions defense and waited on Howard's pass, which sailed just past two leaping defensive backs and into Myles' hands. He took an angle across the field and outran everybody for the score. From there, the legs of Jefferson churned out enough first downs to run out the clock. BTW improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in 1-3A and is a game ahead of Mansfield (5-3, 2-1), which is in a three-way tie with Benton and Fair Park. The Lions had taken a 14-7 lead on a quick move their offense.

When Mansfield was slow returning from a timeout, the Lions went to the air, Jared Taylor hitting a slanting Trey Veals for a 28-yard scoring play. Mansfield never got much room to operate offensively in the first half, but the Lions had some crucial special teams mistakes. The Wolverines had two chances off punts to score points. The first BTW's Jeremy Jefferson (2) is tackled by two Mansfield defenders during 'They stepped up to the occasion. I'm speechless about the way our defense played.

They were put in some critical positions." Booker T. Washington coach Demise Loyd Jessica LeighThe Times Friday night's game. pass from Quan Howard. The Lions did what they've done all season from there, putting everything on Jefferson's legs, and he scored on a 2-yard run to cut the margin to 7-6. Jefferson finished the half with 1 14 yards, while Mansfield had just 91 yards at intermission.

The BTW defense, led by lineman Ramone Randle and Bright, held Jermaine Johnson to 18 yards on six carries. Northwood "We came out tonight and in practice this week with intensity and you could see diat on the field," Turnbow said. "Our offensive line and our backs did an outstanding job blocking as well as our running backs on the field. 'Tonight, with our defensive line, we were hitting them in the mouth this week and that's what we needed to do. This is the best game we've played and with a few more breaks here and there, the outcome could have been different." Fourth-quarter TD propels By Jamie Lunt Special to The Times Minden racked up 215 yards in the air while Northwood kept it to the ground with 206 yards Friday night.

But it was die Crimson Tide who edged out the Falcons for die win, 24-20. Northwood was ahead 20-17 late in the fourth quarter when Minden quarterback Derek Cupples connected with Demetric Carey for a 65-yard touchdown. The Tide's extra point kicked by Cupples was good, was after Ishmael West deflected a BTW punt, causing it to travel only three yards to the Lions' own 28. Mansfield couldn't score from there. clinching Minden's win.

The Crimson Tide is now 5-3 on die season. Minden coach David Feaster said it was Carey's touchdown that gave his team the Cupples momentum to win Friday night's matchup. "I think our defense played really well and Northwood got after us in the second half," Feaster said.
