2B NEWS-PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2003 Local State idn't come easy, but Ringo remains star of Ex-Beatle gets plenty of help from friends By DREW STERWALO He got by with a little help from his friends. Backed by a quintet of musicians who occasionally eclipsed him, Ringo Starr sauntered down memory lane Tuesday night at Florida Gulf Coast University's CONCERT REVIEW Alico Arena. The former Beatle bounded onstage in jeans and sneakers to open the show with his 32-year-old hit "It Don't Come Easy," a title that says a lot about the 63-year-old's stage presence. Although his singing went flat and his swinging arms became a goofy attempt at dancing, the Fab Four's drummer clearly was hav ing a good time with his All Starr Band. Ditto the audience, a couple of thousand baby boomers in graying ponytails and fringed suede jackets some with teenagers in tow.

Starr gave the audience what it came for Beatlemania. He hit his stride a few times, notably with a strong rendition of "Don't Pass Me By" and a sing-along "Yellow Submarine" that pulled the crowd to its feet At his age, if a little unseemly to be singing "You're 16, you're beautiful and you're mine," bat he never tried to pretend his music was anything deeper than it was. He couldn't help asking, "Are there any young girls in the audience?" His tribute to late bandmate George Harrison "Never Without You" from his new "Ringo Rama" album showed a wistful side: "We will carry on, never without you," he sang. Even his best efforts, though, were hampered by a muddy sound mix that buried his vocals and those of his current band-mates. Even John Waite's strong tenor disappeared when he sang his crowd-pleasing ballad "When I See You Smile." Starr generously shared the spotlight with his friends, even bringing percussionist Sheila E.

back for more after a blistering drum solo on her 1980s hit "The Glamorous Life." Although never a great singer, she was the real backbone of this band, which also included Colin Hay from Men At Work, Mark Rivera of Billy Joel's band and Paul Car-rack, who reinvigorated "Tempted," his hit song from his Squeeze days. In the end, though, Ringo was the star. Grinning and flashing peace signs, he made it an evening of good-natured "Ringo Rama." how BRONZES: Sometimes art is returned Wal-Mart may consider Bonita From Page 1B the Knox Gallery on Broad Avenue South in Naples in Febru-ary2002. The $27,000 sculpture of a grandmother reading' the Bible to her grandchildren was bolted to a sandstone bench in front of the gallery. Gallery owner Deane Knox estimated it took four men at least a half hour in the dead of night to unscrew the sculpture, "The.

Good Book," from the bench and load it into a truck, all without anyone noticing what was going on. Such sculptures are rarely recovered, but, once in a while, they turn up in unexpected places. For instance, Georgia police three years ago arrested one of the men suspected of trying to rob a North Naples jewelry store. In the trunk of the man's car, officers found a $10,000 polished bronze sculpture stolen from the Weatherburn Gallery on Broad Avenue South in Naples. The sculpture, "Diva," was returned to the gallery.

yards, Shillingford said. Thieves also might try to unload the sculptures at auction houses or other businesses that sell yard sculptures, he said. Sometimes, though the thefts appear to be more than crimes of convenience and end up requiring a lot of work. For instance, in what may be the most expensive of such thefts locally in recent years, crooks made off with a 350-pound life-size bronze sculpture in front of FGCU: Students say school will fix errors Preliminary talks with city officials held By RYAN HIRAKI and DENISEL SCOTT One Wal-Mart in south Lee County might hot be enough Bonita Springs has become the latest location, joining Estero as a second possible South Lee site for a big-box store. "We are considering the Bonita Springs area, but it is not a replacement for Estero," said Daphne Davis Moore, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

community affairs manager. She could not confirm any details about the store. City Manager Gary Price, City Attorney Audrey Vance and Councilman Jay Arend met Tuesday at City Hall with attorney Neale Montgomery, who was representing Wal-Mart design and development officials. Price said the discussion included noise at night, vegeta-tioa signage, appearance from the road, "trying to make it look like it's not a big box, all the things in the Bonita Beach Road corridor," Price said about the city plan geared to keep the coming to Bonita Springs. But that wouldn't surprise him.

"It could very well be there would be two of them," he said. "They know the area is growing fast. They have stores no more than two or three miles apart." If stores were to be built at the proposed Estero site and in Bonita Springs, they would be just a little farther than Eslick estimates: about 10 miles. And a North Naples store is only seven miles from east Bonita. Eslick said Bonita Springs might be a possibility because Estero has strict, architectural standards and there has been criticism about the store's possible impact oh residential areas." Targeting Bonita requires following some strict rules, too.

Vance, Bonita's attorney, said a big-box store's appearance is regulated, pylon signs are prohibited and vegetation buffering is required, according to the beach road corridor plan. "Bonita Beach Road is the gateway to the Gulf, the gateway to the city and one of the city's primary commercial corridors" along with VS. 4L Vance said. The city has no big-box ordinance, she said, but such mandates applied to Home Depot on the beach road. beach road attractive.

Montgomery declined comment when asked about the discussion topics. Price declined to disclose possible locations for the store. But Councilman Wayne Edsall said he has heard that the Bern wood commercial area east of Interstate 75 and a recently annexed 67 acres in the same area could be a potential site for the store. "I think that would be a good place for it," he said, referring to the land on the east side of 1-75. Landowners in the annexed area and their attorneys said they haven't heard anything involving Wal-Mart Bill Wolf, a real estate broker with Development Associates, the building company for the Bernwood Park of Commerce, said, "No, honest to God," that he knows nothing of the commerce park site east of 1-75 being a possible Wal-Mart locatioa "The only language I've heard about Wal-Mart is on the corner of Koreshan Boulevard and U.S.

"It was a shock that they did overlook or not pay attention to details," Faramo said, adding he's confident such a mistake won't happen again.
