Lewis, McDonald lead improved Bulldogs offense By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com Reginald Prealow doesn't have to worry about his receivers holding on to passes these days.

A year ago when the season started, the Red River coach saw his passing game dropping to the ground too often, but as 2004 went on that changed. The Bulldogs went on to become a playoff team with a prolific passing attack. They are rolling on in 2005. At the heart of the passing game are the same two players who led it last season. Quarterback Al Lewis is a third-year player, while Robert McDonald had a big year last season and is out to duplicate it.

Through three games, Lewis has completed 23 of 41 passes for 775 yards and 10 touchdowns. That conies against one interception. This year, he's more mature," US junior seasons is patience. "Last year, I would get nervous when pressure cane, and I would take off," he says. "I'd rather be a throwing quarterback, but we've got some first-year linemen that have to step up." Lewis favorite reciever is McDonald, who has nine catches for 355 yards and four scores.

"I look for him because he's a senior, and he knows how to get open," McDonald Lewis says. "He runs hard on every play." Prealow doesn't necessarily want his quarterback running at all. Although the team has some designed runs for Lewis, he would rather not call them. "He's made a lot of plays with his Cotton Valley improved to 1-2 on the season with a 22-8 win over Davidson in that third game. Rhymes' hope is that Dunn will agree to allow the forfeit in advance to prevent fans from unnecessarily showing up for a game the Wildcats will not be able to play.

MINDEN: With three games played and the District 14A race beginning tliis week, Crimson Tide coach David Feaster has seen very few surprises. The district race is right where we thought it would be; everybody is good," he said. "It's just going to be a matter of where we're going to fall in. Nobody's looking unbeatable." Feaster said his team played as well as it can play in every phase of the game in a 42-0 defeat of Jonesboro-Hodge last week. Now, he gets to find out if his team can do it on the road.

Bossier is the first 1-4A opponent for Minden, and the game will be played on the Bearkats' field. That means a diverse running game and a tough defensive line, another test for a young Tide offensive line. "They're all playing hard. We don't have any losers over there," Feaster (i Ill TEIi HtJkEL tLUBORXE. FOOTBALL Hunter Heckel threw two touchdown passes on Friday in a Rebels victory.

Heckel threw scoring tosses of 29 and 24 yards. AREA NOTEBOOK Cotton Valley wants Evangel to allow forfeit 'VI 1 Prealow says. "He's taken on more of a leadership role. With him knowing this is his last year, he's kind of looking at things in a different perspective." Lewis three three touchdown passes last week as Red River defeated Delhi Charter, 34-6. The Bulldogs are 2-1, but Prealow still frets a little over that one loss, which came 19-18 at Booker T.Washington.

Against Delhi Lewis Charter, Lewis threw five touchdown passes. "He's been throwing the ball exceptionally well," Prealow says. "It's like he's been in a zone, and I hope it continues." Lewis says his biggest improvement since his sophomore and closer to 30 in both the sophomore and freshman classes. "If we didn't play football, we would be a Class school," he said. Evangel was placed in Distinct 1-1A last fall during the regular reclassification process, but it is a drop in classification for the Eagles.

Despite Evangel's smaller enrollment, the Eagles had played in Class 5A since 1999 and won four state cham-pioships at that level The principals of the LHSAA voted to restrict schools from playing in classifications higher than their enrollment indicates without the approval of a majority of principals in the higher class. When that vote was held, Booker T. Washington and Mansfield were the only schools from northwest Louisiana allowed to play up. Both are members of District 1-3A with 2A enrollments. Evangel applied for 2A membership but did not get a second from another principal.

Rhymes expects every other school in District 1-1A to play Evangel. His own team started with 17 players on the roster, but two players were hurt in the second week of the season and three more on Friday. ii pus minium ST. AltV. FOOTBALL Rod Washington intercepted a pass and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown as the Tigers improved to 3-0.

He also rushed nine times for 71 yards. 3-0 0-0 3-0 0-0 2-1 0-0 legs, and we'll run him in the crunch sometimes, but 1 really don't want to run him," Prealow says. "We will be in bad shape if he goes down." That isn't the case at receiver, where McDonald is very productive but is getting some help now. "Clifford Jones has done an outstanding job," Prealow says. "A lot of times, we get in a ballgame and people are keying on Robert, trying to take him out of the equation.

We've always said we can't rely on one person." Jones is leading the team in catches with 10. He's turned that into 311 yards gained and four touchdowns. Now, he wants the running game to take its place in the equation. "We can't be one-dimensional," Prealow says. "We've been throwing the ball a lot, but we still want to have 50 percent run, 50 percent pass.

Right now, we're just going with what's working." said. "I like to run a whole bunch of different plays. Our offensive line is constantly having to learn stuff and some of them are having trouble keeping up widi me, but they're all learning and becoming more and more confident" ST. MARY: Tigers quarterback Bryan Stamey's run of bad luck has continued, but there is a new answer for it this season. Stamey broke his collarbone, again, in the second week of the season, but Holy Cross transplant Lance LaCoste was able to take over at the position.

"You hate to see it happen to the kid," St Mary coach Eric Held said, "but I guess it's part of football. It's bad luck, too." LaCoste is among the top 40 recruits in the state according to SuperPrep magazine, and he brings a slightiy different dimension to the Tigers offense because of his speed. "We can do a few different tilings," Held said. "We can run some option and some sprint out keeps with him. It's basically die same offense tiiat Holy Cross runs.

football' Michael Jones caught four passes for 99 yards in the Wolverines' victory on Friday. He caught a touchdown pass of 12 yards. With only 12 healthy football players on the Cotton Valley roster, principal Ronald Rhymes has asked Evangel to agree to let the Wildcats forfeit Friday's District 1-1A opener. "It wouldn't do him any good to play me, and it sure wouldn't do me any good to play him," Rhymes said. Rhymes and Evangel coach Dennis Dunn talked before football season began about the possibility of a forfeit, and that appears more likely now that Tommy Henry, the commissioner of the Ivouisiana High School Athletic Association, has clarified the rules regarding forfeits.

Rhymes feared facing a fine and perhaps the loss of football as a penalty for forfeiting the game, but Henry informed him that if every member of District l-A agrees to allow it including Evangel there would be no fine as long as he informs the Eagles beforeliand. "I'm just trying to hold on to football until I can get my numbers back up," Rhymes said. "We're just trying to get through these lean years." Rhymes said Cotton Valley has about 14 students each in its junior and senior classes, whereas the numbers are T.Q. II4RRIS0V IIIMVFOOTBIIL T. Q.
