LocalState 2B SATURDAY. JULY 27, 2002 THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com Black Bayou experiment turns back the clock PAID ANNOUNCEMENTS OBiTOftRES View a week of obituaries online at Shraveporttlmas.com AT 'A I if By Leesha Faulkner Louisiana Gannett News MONROE It was more than an informative stroll through patches of weeds on a late steamy evening. It was a lesson in biological imperialism. Kelby Ouchley of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took about 35 people this month on a walk through an experimental prairie planted at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Monroe.

His discussion was part of the University of Louisiana at Monroe's Museum of Natural History summer seminar. Young, old and middle-aged ambled through the man-made prairie and examined plants both native and alien to northeastern Louisiana as Ouchley explained how plants and wildlife change. According to historical records, there were prairies in northeastern Louisiana, Ouchley said. There are very few remnants that we know of that are left," he That's the reason for the patch of grass near the parking lot of the visitor's center at Black Bayou. Ouchley and others are trying to recreate a prairie to study its ecological impact The patch was planted about three years ago in an area where cotton plants were once cultivated.

Some of the plants' names sound strange: big bluestem, Queen Ann's lace and rattlesnake master. Others, such as ragweed and goldenrod, are more common. There's a lot of stuff out here used as herbs and potions," Ouchley said. "Still is." For example, folklore has it that Native Americans used a tea brewed from rattlesnake master as an antidote to rattlesnake venom. But it's hard, even with experts at our shoulders, to zip back into a time before many of our ancestors tramped tlirough on their adventures.

That's because Europeans brought many of the plants, including weeds, seen today to the New World, writes David E. Crosby, a historian. "Perhaps European humans have triumphed because of their superiority in arms, organization and fanaticism, but what in heaven's name is the reason that the sun never sets on the empire of the dandelion," Crosby writes in "Ecological Imperialism: The Biological Expansion of Europe." "Perhaps the success of European imperialism has a biological and ecological component" at 3 p.m. today at Rose-Neath Funeral Home chapel, Logansport; burial in O.E. Price Memorial Park.

Funeral services will be held at StJoseph's Catholic Church Monday, July 29th at 2 p.m. Joe lived most of his life in Shreveport with his wife of 44 years, Dinah. He continued to be involved in sports as a young man by giving his time to coach many of his sons' teams in football, baseball, and basketball.

He also had a love for the outdoors, which he passed on to his family. He spent much of his life hunting and fishing with his sons. He loved all creatures large and small, which was evident by the many pets he had in his life. This was also true in the way he earned his living in the later years. He was the owner of a boarding facility where he took care of other's pets while they were away.

Before that he owned and operated a water well drilling company. He and his wife spent many hours outside working in the yard. He was very much a family man. He spent as much time as he was able with his wife and children. Those who were fortunate enough to have known Joe received a great gift in their lives.

When you spent time with him you could not "help but smile and laugh and that was true to the very end. We thank the Lord for giving him to us. He will be remembered and thought of often. When you think of Joe, please think of him with a smile on your face. He will be missed very much, but never forgotten.
