Williams, director of the Johns-Manville Re search Center, told 150 safety engi neers here Thursday evening that "safety problems in research op erations are much more difficult than in any other phase of industry." His audience was composed of members of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers which held its June meeting at the research installation. After dinner, the men toured the center, inspecting offices, laboratories and pilot plants and observing the precautions taken to safeguard personnel. Following the tour, the engineers heard Mr. Williams discuss "The Importance of a Safety Program in the Research Laboratory." Explaining the difficulties of safety in research, Mr. Williams said: "The objectives of research are continuously changing, the equipment is constantly being modified, the time allowed is relatively short and the pressure for results is always extreme.

Consequently the mental attitude of the personnel is less cautious than in other phases of industry. "All these things contribute to a philosophy of 'take a 'no time for safety 'we'll worry about safety later' and sometimes 'later' never comes." Guides for the tours, all J-M technical men, were Keneth F. Greene, William C. Streib, William P. Hahn, Charles L.

discipline also was administered more strictly in the home, something that is lacking today, she hastened to add. The veteran school teacher remarked that courtesy was a mandatory thing in the schools -when she became teacher. Most pupils of today lack that attribute, she said. Lessons also were more difficult and social activities were played down. Mrs.

Brampton labeled much of today's emphasis on extra-curricular activity as detracting from the importance of learning the three "R's." Mrs. Brampton, who was born in Basle, Switzerland, came to the United States when she was 3 years old. Her family resided in North Plainfield for several years before moving to Somerville where her father, the late Rev. Fred Koechli, was pastor of the Fourth Reformed Church for 22 years. She attended Somerville elementary schools and was graduated from Somerville High School in 1899.

After Mrs. Brampton was graduated from Trenton Normal School in 1902, she taught in the Carlstadt school system for a little more than four years. She subsequently joined the South Bound Brook School system. Taught Combination Grade When she first came to the little schoolhouse here, Mrs. Brampton taught a combination fourth and sixth grade.

The faculty at that time included five teachers and the principal, the late Thomas Walters. Although her retirement will mean no more report cards to mark, the quiet yet keen-witted Mrs. Brampton said, with a twinkle in her eye, she has planned a complete calendar of events for herself. She hopes to take extension courses at Rutgers next fall and plans to devote time to her hobbies, music and art Mrs. Brampton, who has maintained her own home since her husband's death 14 years ago, said she has no intention of leaving the borough to travel as many persons have suggested.

Her home at Madison and High Sts. is her security, she said. Her brother resides in California. Prior to the closing of the school year yesterday, Mrs. Brampton was feted on two occasions.

The Board of Education paid tribute to her at a dinner at which she was presented a hand-engraved plaque bearing a resolution adopted by the school board commending her for her service. The veteran school teacher also was honored at a community testimonial dinner several weeks ago.
