Adjustment to college life is certainly made easier by roommates and the many others citizens of the dorm, and by the school sharing your same problems and happinesses. Roommates are wonderful Shared among roommates are special letters from special people, dates, clothes, problems, books, and, probably most important, discussions on death, life, poetry, Existentialism, and "What are we doing here? Why aren't we out creating and traveling and seeing the world? Why don't we all quit school and go to a large city and live in an apartment and meet fascinating people and go to school in Paris WHAT IS COLLEGE? A gigantic incubator for the intellectually young and old, a Procrustean bed (my geology again) complete with pillows, a glorified high school or country club, a magic land of social and individual independence. To everyone college presents a different challenge. Each person will meet this challenge according to the way in which his high school career has prepared him to do so. For some it is bitterly lonely in the crowd.

I HAVE BEEN ON safari and have The message: READ! TAKE MATH, FOREIGN LANGUAGE, ENGLISH, HISTORY, AND SCIENCE COURSES ALL YOU CAN GET! READ EVERYTHING! During the high school years, most teens are extra busy with sports, clubs and other extracurricular activities, in addition to a lot of homework.

With these numerous activi ties, many teens are too tired or do not have sufficient time to do the chores around the home which their parents ask them to do. If for a week, each teen would budget his time, I think he would save a few minutes and perhaps get at least some of his duties completed. Write down on a piece of paper all the things which should be done every day. Organize them in the order of se quence making the bed, setting the breakfast table and then going to school. Also write down approximately how much time it takes to do the chore.

The next day, try again to bet ter the first day. In time you 11 become an expert at doing your jobs quickly and in the best way possible. Teens Miss ThePledge Of Allegiance By VIRGINIA RUSSELL Harper Creek High As you think back, can you remember the last time you heard the Pledge of Allegiance? If you're like most of us, it was in grade school. It used to be that the flag was highly respected and it was thought an honor to say the Pledge. When you hear the National Anthem today, are you quiet and respectful to your flag? Again, I think the answer is usually So many times, people are talking, laughing and doing everything except being respectful while the Pledge and Anthem are being given.

Stop and think what your country means to you. Think of the men who lost their lives to give us a free nation. We should count ourselves mighty lucky to be American citizens and we should show it by remembering our flag and country. From now on let's each of us be quiet and respectful during the National Anthem and remember to say the Pledge be fore meetings, assemblies, and public get-togethers. It will make us all better citizens.

When it's time for any kind of repairs, you'll find an expert in the field listed below in WHOM TO CALL By SHEILA SIMROD MSU Freshman BCHS '61 As one who has been on a safari and can now tell others who contemplate such a trip (a) what to bring, and (b) how to prepare, may I address YT's vast audience? I feel that, having "been to college" for a term, I am able to tell those who are contemplating attending how they might best outfit themselves for such a venture. Being admitted to a college is not as difficult as it may sometimes seem. There are literally hundreds of schools around the country who will accept that "average" student. The superior student, grade-wise, usually will have no trouble in getting into a first-rate institution.

AFTER BEING accepted and admitted, enrolled and registered, one must concentrate on staying in school. The best way to ensure this is by having a GOOD high school background. This is, in reality, the most important thing to bring to college. The most important skill you will need is the ability to read well, quickly and comprehensively. Reading (and understanding what has been read) is the basis of all achievement in college or elsewhere witness even directions on the cake mix, baby food or do it yourself package.

Perhaps the phrase "sheltered independence" could best describe life in college and especially "in the dorm." In university life one finds freedom to study or not to study, to eat or not to eat, to sleep or not to sleep, to date or not to date, and to write home or not to write home. So with these choices offered, a very basic axiom is: One's maturity will determine one's success or lack of sucess in college. Maturity it has been writ-en is the ability to see today's actions in the light of tomorrow's effects. This is painfully true. For example, what is more important, writing that paper, due next week, doing those extra chemistry problems; reading more deeply into a subject; or running off to a party that will no doubt be a waste of time? I'M NOT saying that college is all work or that all of high school should be spent in preparing for a sucessful college career.

Rather, one must develop a set of values and convictions and have the self-control and self-discipline to carry out these convictions. SOCIAL LIFE at college falls into six main areas: study dates, coffee dates, parties, mixers, movie dates, and dances. In such an atmosphere of social -independence that college offers, some students tend to date and socialize too extensively. Invariably, day or night, someone can be seen running through the dorm looking for dates for friends for coffee, parties or all the other forms of social recreation. One's maturity will dictate whether one stays in and studies or whether one runs out and cuts up.

MANY STUDENTS reach college, manage to get into a fairly good school, and do not, as yet, have the necessary study habits to "carry them." There isn't any time to develop good study hab its after one reaches college. When you reach college, find a place to study. Elementary? It may be your room, the library, the dorm study room, or a closet with a good light. Find your study place, and GO STUDY All in one place, time after time. It's easier to.

Fads Fade; Teens Try The Usual By DOUG SALERNO St. Philip High One word used by teenagers today and even by some adults, that cannot be found in every dictionary, but is still accepted in everyday conversations, is a simple three letter word FAD. The "definition" for fad is something temporarily popular, and usually novel, that everyone is enthused about wearing or doing. Although most of the ordinary, sane teenagers of today's fast-moving world do not overdo these novel "inventions," to some people this is the way to spend sparetime such as seeing how many people can be crowded into a telephone booth. HOWEVER, most teens are content in their school activities, sports, social events, and, of course, homework.

Since many people point out-that a person will sooner or later get into some form of trouble when he has nothing to do, we teens are encouraged to participate in the various activities that are made available to us. However, it's not considered wise to go to the other extreme and take on too much. One rule to remember is not to take on more than you can handle efficiently and without any undue strain or inconveni ence to the more important ar tivities. Don't do anything that you do not really enjoy or have an interest in. And don't join a club just because your friends do; they may have different interests than your own.

As a final reminder just remember that you cannot be a member of every committee or club and still expect to give equal attention and effort to all of them. Furnace Service FURNACES cleaned and repaired. Authorized Stewart Warner. Winkler. Round Oak and Delco dealer.
