Asked to name any other player of any fame in any sport who wears No. 38, Carlson couldn't do it. But that makes no difference to him.

He likes his number for the same reason that Michael Jordan wears the previously bland-as-can-be No. 23. "So little kids will all want to wear it," Carlson said. So close your eyes and picture a world where kids wrestle each other when the No. 38 pops out off the uniform bag.

"That's why I got it," Carlson said. Once again, there are no single-digit pitchers: The only one 'in Captains history since Fair Grounds Field opened (1986) was Trevor Wilson, who wore No. 9. 4 16 2- 1 .43 3 9 1 0 69 6 22 2 0 104 4 21 1-1 150 2 7 10 164 6 13 1JJ0 Strikeouts Nichting, San Anion Rogers, Shrtveport Rambo, Jackson Huiarnn. 28. Outfielder Reed Peters had No. 37 on Media Day, but apparently came to his senses before Opening Day and had No. 7 on his back. Is 37 a bad number or what? Of course, there's always the guy who wears No.

13. Does that mean that first baseman Mike Easley is superstitious or isn't superstitious? "Size 44," Easley said. "I needed a size 44 and that's what No. 13 was." Now if he can just keep black cats from jumping out in front of him. Actually, have a rough-looking number is nothing new for Yockey.

"I had 52 in high school," he said. "I just got 46 because it was another high number." Incidentally, those who are keeping up with such trivial facts will note that 46 is the highest number worn by a Shreveport Captain for at least 10 years, perhaps as far back as the days in the early '70s when MAJOR LEAGUE STATISTICS National League TEAM BATTING 38 2 6 64 6 10 55 11 8 42 3 6 Kansas City 525 35 103 5 31 .196 NDMDUAl BATTING Btstd on 13 plate appearances Bream Atl JCIark SO Amaro Phi Gonzalez Hou Alices Stl Scon Chi Hunter Atl 0 0 .158 3 5 .156 3 6 145 1 4 .143 0 2 103 1 5 .091 2 3.081 39 0 4 44 2 4 37 2 3 TEAM PITCHING Whitaker Det 47 7 9 1 2 .191 Velarde NV 58 7 11 1 4 .190 Quirk Oak 42 4 8 1 3 .190 Hamilton Mil 48 6 9 0 7 .187 Milligan Bit 43 3 8 2 8 186 Daugherty Tex 35 3 6 0 3 .171 McRae KC 60 6 10 0 3 .167 Brett KC 55 5 9 2 5 164 Gaetti Cal 49 2 8 1 2 163 Clark Bsn 38 2 6 0 1 158 Shumpen KC 32 3 5 0 2 .156 Surhoff Mil 46 5 7 1- 9 .152 McReynolds KC 60 3 9 1 2 .150 Maldonado Tor 61 4 9 0 5 .148 Macfarlane KC 35 3 5 1 3 .143 Barfield NV 48 2 5 0 1 .104 BR RB Avg Sen Francisco 549 70 146 6 64 .265 Los Angeles 560 67 145 11 64 .258 Pittsburgh 524 86 134 11 79 255 Philadelphia 569 74 142 11 73 .249 SanOiego 5 63 148 17 58 .248 Houston 545 53 135 10 50 247 Montreal 559 70 135 11 62 .241 Cinrjnnab 583 63 141 7 52 .241 St. Low) 538 57 129 7 50 .239 NewVork 569 79 136 9 72 239 Atlanta 560 60 131 13 57 .233 Chicago 498 56 114 9 55 228 RESULT EXCHANGE Foreign Donwitic MorrcWy Tarma Strange choices: Shreveport players aren't wearing conventional digits on their backs. By JOHN JAMES MARSHALL The Times How the 1992 Shreveport Captains will finish in the standings remains to be seen. But one thing is for certain this is one of the roughest crops of uniform numbers in recent memory.

Baseball numbers are usually fairly predictable. Seemingly, there would be a long line for players trying to get such favorites as 3, 7, 24, 44, 32 and 33. It's almost inevitable that a middle infielder would get No. 1. Pitchers are almost always dou ble digits.

But the Captains of '92 are breaking all the rules. There is no No. 1. There are as many players with numbers higher than 35 than with single digits (four). There's a 46 (Mark Yockey), a 38 (Dan Carlson), plus a manager Twins' Pagliarulo will have surgery The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS Third baseman Mike Pagliarulo will undergo surgery Tuesday to have a bone fragment removed from his right hand and will be lost to the Minnesota Twins at least four weeks.

Pagliarulo broke the hook of the hamate bone in his hand during batting practice before Wednesday's game in Seattle. The bone is on the underside of the hand near the wrist. This is the second time this season Pagliarulo has been on the disabled list. He was hit in the head by a David West pitch and suffered a partially perforated eardrum during spring training and missed the first week of the season. 222-5000 TEAM PITCHING ERA ER BB SOStwSa Pittsburgh 2.66 116 42 44 89 3 7 Houston 2.74 128 47 59 111 1 6 Sen Francisco 2.78 121 44 47 79 1 1 San Diego 2.93 150 52 42112 1 4 St.
