longtime resident of Kingsville probably -remembers more of the early history of the Goliad area than Just about any other South Texan And well she might Mrs Allen will observe her 99th birthday anniversary in December She la a slight alert woman with a remarkable keen memory and a definite interest in early happenings in South Texas She does not look her 9S years and people often -guess her to be a dozen years younger than her actual age Indians frequently raided the Goliad area and bandits often swooped down upon the historic little town without advance warning during her girlhood days for the past several years During a three-year period she sent out more than 400 gifts to her many friends She selects lime green yellow and white wool thread for her needlework since the colon better are now to be seen throughout the county having been erected prior to the Texas Centennial observance in Mrs Allen said Both grandfathers of Mrs Allen were missionaries He- parents came from Mississippi to Texas and settled at Goliad where her father inveated In a ranch "The land was originally a 9 Danish grant given to early colonists in the area" she recalled As a small girl Ellen Virginia learned her ABCs from studying ths large family Bible Her niothr er assisted in teaching her the alphabet and word and sentence recognition An uncle" Charles Campbell who made bis borne with her family then took over the early education i the little girl and her sisters and brothers After a while the Campbell family moved from Goliad to Lavaca County and the youngsters attended a small log school bouse at Halletlsvllle for a time The family also lived near Sweet Home in Lavaca County before going to HellettaviHe The little girl bad returned to Goliad to attend school when President
