Next came Barbara Taylor. That was in San Francisco in 1973. He fled to Mexico, but was arrested on a fluke on this side of the border. Officials never realized they had an accused serial killer, Walsh says; before the fingerprints cleared, he had led an escape with a car, three guns and $6,000. Next came the 1977 murder of a rich Mexico City coed named Laura Gomez.

Walsh says she was Caputo's girlfriend, four months pregnant. Nothing more was heard, until an anonymous tip that Caputo was responsible for the 1983 killing of Jacqueline Bernard, a prominent, 62-year-old writer. "We took his picture and showed it to everyone in her apartment building," Walsh says. "Everyone said that was her boyfriend." And then Ricardo Caputo vanished. He may have reformed or died; Walsh thinks he's probably just covering his tracks better.

Caputo hasn't been seen in eight years; no one knows if he's still dangerous, still in the United States or even still alive. Walsh is convinced he is and that TV can catch him. Back in 1971, Caputo was a New York waiter who was also an artist and spoke five languages.

He began dating Natalie Brown. Later, she told friends she was trying to end the relationship. Soon, she was found slain. Caputo was sent to an institution for the criminally insane, where his charm persisted. "Judith Becker was a young psychiatrist from an upper-class family," Walsh says.

"He seduced her in prison." Becker began taking Caputo home on illegal furloughs, Walsh says. Soon, she was slain and he had disappeared. He was attractive, ambitious, intelligent. "He was a handsome guy, a social climber," says John Walsh, who profiles him in Ladykiller: The Most Wanted Man in America tonight on the Fox Network.
