A 1 Football Titles erKeiey, By TOM EVANS High school football teams from Berkeley Heights. South Plainfield and Westfield had similar unbeaten records this past season. And today, those teams have one more thing in common. Each squad was awarded a N.J. State Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional football championship.

THE SELECTIONS, which were determined by the NJSIAA's Executive Committee, were based primarily on the SI A A point system, which considers performance and the strength of opposition. Governor Livingston (Berkeley Heights) shared the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 crown with Millburn. Berkeley had a 9-0-0 record, and was ranked second with 453 points. Millburn, which posted a 7-1-1 record, was awarded 478 NJSIAA points. Berkeley Heights, which began varsity football hi 1960, captured its first state title.

South Plainfield was all alone at the top of the Central Jersey, Group 3 division. The Tigers, with a 9-0-0 record, piled up 507 points to gain their first state championship. NORTH PLAINFIELD, which lost to South Plainfield on Thanksgiving Day, was second with 453 points. The Canucks had a 7-2 record. North Hunterdon (6-2) was fourth with 280 points.

Westfield, the only unbeaten and untied Group 4 team in the state, earned 569 points to win the Central Jersey Group 4 crown. The Blue Devils were 9-0-0. It was the seventh state championship for Westfield, and the second in Group 4 competition. The Devils also won Group 4 honors in 1961. Group 3 titles were awarded the Westfield teams of 1941, '44, '45, '47 and '49.

Scotch Plains Fanwood (6-2-1) was seventh in Central Jersey Group 4 with 469 points. Stevens of North Edison, in its second year of varsity play eighth with 436 points, after a 7-2 year. IT TOOK coach Jack Bick-nell just two years to come up with a champion at Berkeley Heights. The former North Plainfield High star coached the 1964 team to a 4-4-1 record. Spearheading the Berkeley attack was junior quarterback Bruce Corcoran, who ran for eight touchdowns and passed for nine, and Nick Serritella, who ran for eight touchdowns.

Defensively, the Highlanders surrendered only five touchdowns. That stingy de fense was led by linebacker Ed Koszowski, tackles Steve L'euter and Jim Hambacher and end John Carver. South Plainfield Coach Phil Graham is in his third season. The unbeaten season was the first in the 10-year history of the school. WALLY CIRAFESI, the outstanding quarterback, threw 18 touchdown passes and ran for six more to lead the Tigers.

Richie Toot, with 11 touchdowns, and Jim Anderson, with nine, added to the offensive assault, which piled up 255 points. Westfield's coach Gary Keh-ler is batting .400 in five years. In 1961, he became one of the few coaches to win a state title in his first year. The well balanced Blue Devils were directed by the cool play-calling of quarterback Dick Stotler, who passed for nine touchdowns. Chuck Hood and Ron Hall led the touchdown parade with 11 and eight, respectively.
