Hollan has been the New Orleans junior champion the past three years and is going for his fourth this summer. He is also the 1991 Class A state high school champion and has been All-State the last four years.

Last year he finished 11th in the 1990 Future Masters tournament. Other top contenders include Will White of Madison, and part; ner Wes Willis of Canton, Glen Millican of Garland, Texas, and Brian Shelton of Richardson, Texas; and Jimmy Hall and Wes Truet of Jackson, Miss. "We have some good boys," said Anderson. "Hollan and Melancon are the best, I think, but that team from Dallas (Millican and Shelton) are good too." Locally, Anderson says Steele Scott, Michael Simpson, Eric Spencer and Jason Humphries should fair well. "I think Steele Scott will play well," Anderson said.

"He's the best local boy, but that Simpson boy is no slouch either. "The field is good, but it's not as good as it has been in the past." The first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament will be to qualify for the four flights. By John D'Aquila Staff reporter The 11th and final Southern Heritage Junior Invitational golf tournament begins today as 64 teenage boys will try to tame Alexandria Golf and Country Club. Though the tournament is 36 players shy of being full, and the defending individual champion is not eligible to participate and only half the championship four ball team returns, tournament director Charlie Anderson still thinks the field is a good one. Anderson announced Wednesday that this would be the last Southern Heritage in light of all the other opportunities for junior golfers to play competitively.

Last year the individual medalist was Phillip Schmidt of Baton Rouge and the team champs were Sid Neal and Tyler Crawford. Neal, of Vicks-burg, is partnered with Kevin Raner, also of Vicksburg. There are 16 teams with handicaps of two or less, with Ross Hollan of Destrehan and Mark Mel-ancon of Metairie the favorites in the four ball, according to Anderson. Hollan, said Anderson, is a good bet to win the individual title. "That's the team to beat," said Anderson, of the Hollan-Melancon team.

With the score tied 1-1, Cleveland had runners at first and second when Belle hit a grounder to third. Third baseman Craig Gre-beck tagged third, but his throw to first pulled Robin Ventura off the bag.

Belle, however, was trotting, giving Ventura time to tag him out. "Tonight was the most flagrant example of not running out a ground ball I've ever seen at the major league level," McNamara said. "He not only embarrassed himself. He embarrassed the ballclub, everybody in the organization, by doing that. Plus, he has not been productive lately.

If you're not productive, you better justify some way of staying in the lineup. Belle walked away without saying a word when asked about the incident and the demotion to Class AAA Colorado Springs.
