Eric Moran, who came on in relief in the ninth inning with no outs and a runner at first, retired three of the next four batters to claim the win, pushing his record to 9-3. Frank DiPino, the former major leaguer, took the loss, giving up four hits in 1 13 innings of relief. His record is 6-4. Peters, with three home runs allowed, moved into a tie for the league lead for most home runs allowed this season with 15.

In an earlier season meeting with Lubbock, Peters gave up four homers, including three straight in the first inning. Peters left with two outs in the sixth after loading the bases, and James Varney got Andy Hartung to fly out to right to get out of the inning. Varney walked the Crickets' leadoff batter in the seventh, Norton, almost hitting him in the head on the fourth ball. Norton started towards the mound but was restrained by Aces catcher Brian Arntzen, and Aces manager Stan Cliburn pulled Varney in favor of Moran. Moran, with one out, intentionally walked pinch hitter Glenn Sullivan, then struck out pinch hitter John Stratton and got Tim Demerson to ground into a force out at second, thanks to a nice fielding play by second baseman Marvin Cole, who chased down the ball behind the bag and tossed to shortstop Rick Bender for the third out.

Thompson was 3-for-4 for the first game with two stolen bases and three runs batted in. With the score tied at 4, Robbie Glenn led off the bottom of the seventh with a one-out base hit up the middle. Arntzen walked and Bender got his second base hit of the evening to load the bases and set the stage for Thompson to thread the game-winning hit between the pitcher and second baseman. Lubbock starter Keith Peiatowski gave up only two hits in five innings but he walked seven in the first three innings while giving up just one run. He was relieved at the start of the sixth by David Baine, who loaded the bases with a walk and two base hits before Crickets manager Greg Minton summoned DiPino.

Will Rangers finally make the playoffs? ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) A recent run of success at home has the Texas Rangers wondering whether this might be the year they finally reach the playoffs. The Rangers went into Thursday one game ahead of both Milwaukee and the New York Yankees in the race for the wild-card spot. But the Rangers, who have never made a playoff appearance, severely damaged themselves in the American League West race with a 10-game losing streak after the All-Star break. Manager Johnny Oates has battled injuries and an inconsistent pitching staff. Texas lost third baseman Dean Palmer before the season and slugger Juan Gonzalez just came off the disabled list for a second time.

Gonzalez has missed 54 games with back and neck problems. The Rangers have won 10 of their last 16 games. They have won seven of their last nine games at The Ballpark in Arlington. "You have to be a good home team and we're starting to be tough in this park," said Oates. The Rangers were 31-32 in their new home last year.

Texas was 10 games under .500 but was leading the division when the strike came. The Rangers have never won a pennant and didn't claim one because of the way the seasonended. No division pennant flies from the flagpole at The Ballpark. "We've got a good shot at the wild card," said club president Tom Schieffer. "Johnny has done a good job of making do with the injury cards that have been dealt him.

The woman is represented by Minneapolis attorney Lori Peterson, who recently settled a sexual harassment case against the Minnesota Vikings and quarterback Warren Moon. A civil suit is planned, she said. "If the criminal system doesn't have the courage to challenge the ballplayers, we are confident a jury in civil court will recognize the 'boys will be boys' mentality at work here and properly punish predators who take advantage of victims," she said in a prepared statement.

"We think we've got a dynamite civil case," Peterson said in an interview, claiming the investigative reports showed the players "repeatedly lied and tried to hide the evidence." "Our client said the same thing throughout," she said. The woman, who has not been identified, told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis in an interview published Thursday that she thought her profession would make it hard for authorities to believe her story. Crying and shaking during the interview, she told the newspaper, "If I'm guilty of bad judgment and I don't believe I was does it mean the sentence is rape and being humiliated? I don't think the police believe what happened to me. You know, they always come down on you, this backlash of 'What were you doing there in the first She gave the newspaper reports from St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse, describing marks which doctors and nurses said could indicate that she was held against her will.

The records also showed that she "was extremely tender and sore" during anal and vaginal examinations and did not appear intoxicated, the newspaper said. A nurse reported red stains on the back of the woman's shirt and said she was continually crying, the record showed. Officials admitted that after they learned she was a nude dancer they asked her if she was a prostitute. Kind said her job as a dancer did not influence the investigation, however. No one admitted to exchanging money during the incident or that the woman had asked for money, Kind said.

At least two other women attended the party at which the alleged rapes took place, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Cori Papiernik, 21, said she briefly attended the get-together in the dormitory. As she was leaving, she said he the woman banging on a window. She was "yelling at these guys to let her out," said Papiernik, who said she notified a man stationed at the front door of the dormitory and minutes later hailed a passing police car.
