James Cleveland, Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston and Smokey Robinson, to name a few of the names on this star-studded tribute.

Unrated, 1988. Pacific Arts, $19.95. Science fiction Few filmgoers saw "Dead Ringers." But Los Angeles film critics did. And they named David Cronenberg the best director of 1988 for his harrowing science fiction piece about twin doctors whose experiments in fertility go awry. The film also won 10 Genies, including best picture, from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.

Jeremy Irons plays the twin doctors. Genevieve Buj old is the unlucky patient Not rec Maria Conchita Alonso stars in series "One of the Boys" which the NBC (KALB-TV, Channel 5) airs at 7 tonight. But don't overlook Jeroen Krabbe, Peter Riegert and Sylvia Miles, all of whom give solid if brief support in this singularly minded, modern romantic comedy by Joan Micklin Silver. PG, 1988.

Warner, $89.95. Drama For her hard-nailed portrayal of anthropologist Dian Fossey in "Gorillas in the Mist," Sigourney Weaver earned a best actress Oscar nomination. The Oscar did not go to Weaver. But I still maintain it's her best film work to date, despite, Anna Phelan's wandering screenplay PG-13, 1 988. MCA, $89.95.

In "Tucker: The Man and his Dream," Jeff Bridges is at his pragmatic best. He's the ever-bubbling Preston Tucker, the man who built the safety-oriented "car of tomorrow" in the late '40s To the movie's detriment, Francis Ford Coppola makes Tucker terribly nice, but this true story of a David of a car builder fighting the corporate Goliaths steers as close to Cap-ra as we've seen this decade. Joan Allen, Martin Landau and Dean Stockwell top an unusually earnest cast. PG, 1 988. Paramount, $89.95.

This charming family story, set in the English countryside during the mid-'50s, stars Jeremy Irons and his real son Samuel, as a father and son who share a strong bond. An unscrupulous land speculator tries to buy their little piece of property but they stand fast and won't sell. Ultimately, the young boy proves to be a hero saving his father from jail, as well as rescuing a nide of pheasants earmarked for slaughter in the name of gentlemanly sport.

Top Sellers By Max McQueen Cox News Service Once upon a time in the land of Motown there lived a five-man music machine named the Temptations. The very mention of their name would have toes a-tap-ping and mouths a-humming. Even those without a trace of soul could carry a Temp tune.

The time came for the Temptations to make an in-concert video for their royal subjects who have stuck by them for 28 years some hit-filled, some hitless. But for "Get Ready," the Temptations must have had a wardrobe mix-up. For however well-intentioned, the Temps are caught wearing the emperor's clothes in this 55-minute video. Filmed in London last year, "Get Ready" finds the Temps looking and sounding like a third-rate Las Vegas act racing through set without passion or originality. And only a little bit of soul.

Black, white or otherwise. Even the introductions (especially those of bass Melvin Franklin) have the monotone, canned sound of a group that is present only to fulfill its contractual obligations, not to entertain. "Perfunctory" is the only way to describe the Temps' slick, emotionless glide through 18 hits, from "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" to "I Can't Get Next to You" to "The Way You Do the Things You Do." With all the gloss and glitz in most music videos, one has to appreciate "Get Ready" for its straightforwardness, if nothing else. There is something to be said for a no-frills music video I would have been perfectly happy if "Get Ready" were nothing but Temptations hits stacked back-to-back. As is, "Get Ready" is but a faded sampler of the Temptations' once hard-driving, soul-stirring style.

Or was that sound just my imagination? "Get Ready The Temptations' Greatest Hits Live." Unrated, 1989, $24.95. She and her boss Mike (Robert Clohessy) agree to go on a date but it turns out to be a succession of mishaps and misunderstandings. (Repeat) Harry's daughters think they're really doing a good deed by buying their dad a ticket to the Bahamas for a well-deserved rest. But Harry thinks his girls are trying to get rid of him because he demands too much of their time. A nice look at parent-children relationships, played for laughs, of course.
