Yiergutz Staff reporter Lafayette's hitters roughed up Alexandria pitcher Tony Mack like a neighborhood bully pounding an 98-pound weakling. The Bullfrogs ripped Mack for five runs in the top of the first and added a little spice to their lead with two more runs in the third for a 7-1 advantage.

Lafayette then shifted into cruise control and motored to a 94 victory over Alexandria, sending Saturday night's Opening Day Bringhurst Field crowd of 3,118 home thinking about memories of last year's Texas-Louisiana League championship that was won by the Acgs The contest, scheduled for 6:35 did not begin until 7:05 p.m., and dragged on for three hours and thirty-five minutes. Chris Cassels, who played for Tyler last year and was named the T-LL Most Valuable Player, put a little pop in the Bullfrogs' bats by clubbing a two-run homer to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead. Bobby Llanos, who led the T-LL in home runs last season, added a two-run homer, and Ed Campaniello came through with an RBI double to help the Bullfrogs put a five-spot on the board in the first "That was big to jump on them early in the game, especially in their home opener," said Cassels. "It silenced the crowd and took them out of it early. Tony (Mack) just made a couple of bad pitches and we were able to capitalize on them." Lafayette racked up seven extra base hits against Alexandria pitchers' Mack, Darell White and Brandon Hawkins.

"We've got a little pop in our lineup, especially in the middle," said Cassels, who was the Bullfrogs' designat-ed-hitter Saturday. "We've got some guys that can swing it On the other hand, we've got some little guys who can get on base, get some steals and make things happen." Cassels, who later added an RBI single in the fourth inning to put Lafayette up 8-1, thought he hit either a fastball or a sinker against Mack on his home run blast. "I just love this ballpark," said Cassels. "I've had a lot of success here. Last year, I had six home runs in six games.

I wouldn't mind playing here." The Aces probably wouldn't mind having Cassels either, but for now, he'll just try to stoke the fire to help heat up the Lafayette-Alexandria rivalry that many in the league Uiink will happen in time. "Both teams have a lot of past connections, like our general manger (Ryan Gribble) and first base coach (Walter Guillory)," said Cassels. Gribble and Guillory were both with the Aces last year. "Me and OB (Aces' first baseman John O'Brien) go way back, too. It should be come a good little rivalry." Lafayette manager Andy Skeels said his veterans came through for him Saturday against Alexandria.

"Some of these guys have been around the league awhile, like Chris (Cassels) and Ramon Cedeno, who is your basic 20 home run and 80 RBIs type of guy," said Skeels. "I've got some veterans in the middle of my lineup who have certainly proven themselves. If I don't screw them up, we've got a good chance of doing something this year." Skeels agreed with Cassels, saying that the five-run first inning really put a damper on the Aces' ceremonies to begin the game. "I think they were drowsy after the (championship) ring ceremonies," said Skeels. "I think anytime you can eliminate somebody's home crowd, it's to your benefit." Skeels also thinks the two teams will develop into a solid rivalry in years to come.

"I hope so," said Skeels. "I think it's good for professional baseball in the state and will foster more interest in people who otherwise might not be interested." taste 118 title tpeearmcei A8 HR RBI Art HMomsKC 124 17 49 1 14 .395 Ifloongue Te 170 34 66 9 33 368 TwalkerMin 130 21 46 3 1 8 .354 EistadAna 190 32 65 11 32 342 Higginson Det 159 31 54 9 27 340 McCrackenTB 189 26 63 2 18 .333 TMartwez NYY 148 26 49 6 38 331 Jeter NYY 179 38 59 7 28 .330 EasleyDet 158 30 52 11 39 .329 Thome Cl 162 37 53 9 36 .327 SeguiSea 163 29 53 31 .325 Grieve Oak 185 41 60 7 31 .324 SlairsOak 131 24 42 7 32 .321 Magadan Oak 109 12 35 1 13 .321 GHiliSea 150 26 48 7 18 320 BrosiusNYY 141 22 45 2 21 .319 0 Neili NVY 163 23 52 3 29 .319 JuGonzalez Tex 192 36 61 12 59 .318 Edmonds Ana 161 33 51 9 30 .317 MVauonnBos 183 28 58 12 29 .317 OtfetmanKC 175 28 55 2 21 .314 Raines NYY 99 16 31 3 17 .313 ARodnguei Sea 202 38 63 1 8 39 .312 Vi-quel Cle 170 30 53 0 21 .312 MclemoreTex 160 33 50 3 31 .312 TGoodwinTex 167 32 52 1 8 .311 Ortiz Mm 98 17 30 4 20 .306 LGonzalezOet 147 25 45 4 20 .306 Barnes Bal 111 13 34 3 19 .306 BWilliams NYY 154 33 47 5 26 .305 EDavisBal 106 21 32 15 .302 KADDottOak 100 15 30 1 8 .300 Garciaparra Bos 147 20 44 5 27 .299 Justice Cle 167 31 50 9 38 .299 WCIark Tex 167 32 50 7 27 .299 CDelgadoTor 105 10 31 3 16 .295 MackKC 112 18 33 4 15 .295 OlearyBos 174 30 51 12 26 .293 Curtis NYY 113 22 33 5 24 .292 Lofton Cle 182 38 53 4 28 .291 SAiomarCle 134 19 39 2 17 .291 SurnotlBal 169 16 49 6 34 .290 Bragg Bos 97 15 28 3 16 .289 Durham ChW 170 32 49 5 18 .288 ROavisSea 146 22 42 8 29 .288 DLewisBos 139 17 40 2 13 .288 TFemandezTor 139 21 40 3 21 .288 RAIomarBal 178 31 51 4 15 .287 MRamirezCle 158 20 45 7 30 .285 DiSarcina Ana 144 21 4t 1 17 .285 MearesMm 155 22 44 3 20 .284 Griffey Jr Sea 183 39 52 1 7 40 .284 Ventura CtiW 161 22 45 4 22 .280 Palmer KC 164 24 46 11 32 .280 McGriff TB 177 20 49 6 30 .277 FTatisTex 124 16 34 0 12 .274 FTtiomasChW 164 32 45 7 32 .274 Damon KC 184 26 50 2 13 .272 WaloeckAna 103 15 28 2 13 .272 RPalmeiroBal 173 27 47 10 35 .272 Giambi Oak 166 24 45 5 30 .271 BLHunlerOet 185 19 50 3 15 .270 MolltorMin 178 24 48 1 20 .270 ToClarkDet 156 23 42 4 28 269 CoomerMin 171 20 46 8 24 .269 Salmon Ana 104 19 28 10 23 .269 SleintHcti Mm 108 15 29 2 8 .269 Carter Bal 134 18 36 3 12 .269 Henderson Oak 172 28 46 3 16 .267 BordickBal 128 16 34 5 14 .266 Stewart Tor 151 22 40 2 11 .265 Cairo TB 133 15 35 2 16 .263 GAndersonAna 175 17 46 3 16 .263 EMartmezSea 171 21 45 7 31 .263 SpiezioOak 160 21 42 5 24 .262 MCordovaMin 107 16 28 2 20 .262 McDonald Oak 104 14 27 1 14 .260 CRipkenBal 178 21 46 3 20 .258 DaMartinezTB 152 19 39 2 11 .257 Greer Tex 180 34 46 5 31 .256 SGreen Tor 165 24 42 8 23 .255 Stevens Tex 141 23 36 11 29 .255 Caruso ChW 114 19 29 1 11 .254 MOrdonezChW 154 25 39 6 16 .253 Knoblauch NYY 162 27 41 2 10 .253 JKmgKC 162 24 41 9 34 .253 A East DmsM Pet 61 Atlanta 35 14 .714 NewYork 25 20 .556 8 ritarjelrjhia 22 24 .470 11 12 Montreal 17 30 362 17 Honda 16 33 321 19 CMtMDnritiM I Pet. 61 Houston 30 18 .625 Chicago 28 20 .583 2 St Lours 25 22 .532 412 Milwaukee 23 24 .489 612 Pittsowgrl 24 26 .480 7 fjnarvalj 23 26 .469 712 West DtvsiM Pet. 61 SanDiego 31 18 33 SawFrancesco 27 22 551 4 Los Angeles 23 24 .489 7 Colorado 20 29 .408 11 Arizona 14 33 296 16 Frktif't Games PTiadelphia 7, Montreal 5. 10 innings RoorJa 3.
