The Town Talk, Alexandria-Pineville, La. Saturday, February 8, 1997 C-7 'Beautician' resembles TV sitcom Williams hits jackpot with 'Jack' Movie Review Video reviews 97 animals, she becomes an instant tabloid heroine. And this leads to her being mistaken as a science teacher by a confused recruiter from a newly de-Communized Eastern European mini-country called Slovetzia. So, as in "The Nanny," she gets hired to be a family's primary caretaker in this case as the tutor to the over-regimented children of Slovetzia's ruler, Boris "The Beast" Pochenko (Timothy Dalton). Yes, a kind of "The Sound of Music" with all the songs replaced by Drescher's nasal one-liners and pearls of QVC wisdom As a movie, "The Beautician and the Beast" is a TV show.

After a while, in fact you begin to wonder just when the commercial break will come, and where the laugh track is. comedy, "The Beautician and the Beast" she's also finally gets another crack at movie stardom. Whether or not she makes it this time, only time (and the weekend grosses) will telL But her off beat charm is much in evidence, and the movie is sort of (but not hugely) fun. She plays a droll, incorrigibly good-natured New York beautician who teaches her art at night school while spending her days pounding the pavement hoping against hope to land her dream job: as one of those "hostesses" who call out the winning lotto numbers on TV. Written by Todd Graff. Cast Fran Drescher, Timothy Dalton. Paramount 107 minutes. Rated PG for some sexual innuendo. Grade: In 1980, a film called "Hollywood Knights" offered reasonably showy roles to two unknown actresses Michelle Pfeiffer and Fran Drescher.

And several critics of the time actually picked Drescher to be the more likely star of the pair. Fate decreed otherwise, of course, but Drescher didn't give up. She endured a decade of TV and small movie parts Man," "Dr. she built her own comic persona (that whiny Queens voice), and she created, produced, wrote and starred in her own hit TV series, "The Nanny." Hollywood Pictures. Priced to rent What happens when a boy ages four times faster than normal? If Robin Williams is in the role, it means lots of sexual innuendo and scatological references emanating from a 10-year-old in a 40-year-old body. Nevertheless, this Francis Ford Coppola-directed comedy struck a chord with 7-to-12-year-olds and turned into a worldwide pre-teen hit. Overtly suggestive or not, "Jack" is sure to be just as popular with video-watching families. Recent tragic headlines will generate even more interest in "Jack." For Bill Cosby makes a cameo as a tutor whose patience is tried by Williams' distracted lad.

You can't watch those scenes now without conjuring up visions of Cosby working one-to-one with his murdered courtyard is a miracle. The gardener (Danny Nucci) knows better. So does a newlywed (Lara Flynn Boyle) who hires the con man to retrieve the nickels and dimes from the faithful who flock to the inner-city parish. BOGUS. PG, 1996.

Warner. Priced to rent When Whoopi Goldberg and Gerard Depardieu are good, they are very, very good. Conversely, when they are bad. Very bad. Director Norman Jewison usually makes wise casting and story choices, but he misses by a mile with this saccharin saga about a single New Jersey career woman (Goldberg) who inherits the son of her best friend.

Depardieu is the boy's invisible guardian angel, but not even this bio whard French actor can draw upon enough divine inspiration to save this odd, aimless film. I'm warning you: Think twice about renting this lame, so-called comedy. son, Ennis. BAMBI. 1942.

"Bambi" is back in video outlets, but only for 55 days, in honor of its 55th year of theatrical release. That means you have until March 31 to buy this tape about a dear orphaned deer who's helped out by forest friends, such as the twitterpat-tering rabbit Thumper, and Flower, a lovelorn skunk.
