PAGE All THE SUN, BALTIMORE, SATURDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 7, 1970 TO EVERY READER OF THIS PAGE, WE SINCERELY AND PROUDLY EXTEND AN OPEN INVITATION FOR YOU TO VISIT ANY ONE OF THE NURSING HOMES OF THE HEALTH FACILITIES ASSOCIATION OF MARYLAND. WE INVITE YOU TO SEE WITH YOUR OWN EYES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE CARE AND TREATMENT OF THE PEOPLE WHOM WE CALL OUR GUESTS. PLEASE TELEPHONE THE NURSING HOME YOU WISH TO VISrr FOR A MUTUALLY CONVENIENT APPOINTMENT. what do yon really about Not too many years ago a Nursing Home was known as "the old folks home." A place where the elderly, ill and infirm went in and never came out. A place where people died.

And nobody cared nobody. Today, the advancements and accomplishments of Nursing Homes can be compared to the horse and buggy and a 1971 automobile. Crystal radio sets and color television. The change, the advancements, the improvements have been phenomenal. Nursing Homes have improved and grown because of the talented people who have supervised and organized them.

During the past generation, brilliant, imaginative, and creative people have been drawn into the Nursing Home field. These have been dedicated individuals. People who would be successful in any endeavor. Did you know that every Administrator of a Maryland Nursing Home must be examined, qualified and licensed by the State of Maryland just as are physicians, attorneys-and accountants? This recent legislation was strongly supported by the Maryland Nursing Home Association. Did you know that over twenty different Federal, State, City.and other governmental organizations and bureaus consistently inspect our facilities? And that we must strictly enforce the hundreds of pages of govermental laws, rules and regulations laid down by these organizations? Yet we still have problems in spite of all the rules, regulations and supervision.

Of course we do. And we are constantly striving to overcome these problems. It has not been an easy task to gain acceptance and success in a field where the public and government has been apathetic. Where nobody cared nor understood nor gave a darn. The Nursing Home's mission has been to completely administer to the care of and bring dignity to the old, the infirm, the ill, the elderly.

It is not an easy task but we do it every day. We do it well. In spite of the same public and governmental apathy. At present, the maximum allowable compensation for government sponsored patients (Medicaid) would barely pay for a simple hotel room or your dinner at a restaurant. Yet, every Nursing Home patient is served 3 complete and healthy meals a day (supervised by Dietitians) and in between meal snacks; continuous Professional Nursing care 24 hours around the clock; clean sheets and linen; many changes of garments; Occupational and recreational therapy; Social services, the use of a complete library and many other services too numerous to mention but most important, CONSTANT ATTENTION AND CARE.

Did you know that by 1975 there will be more patient beds in Nursing Homes than in hospitals? In .1966 there were approximately 583,415 beds available in Nursing Homes across the United States. During the next five years the demand will reach 1,200,000 beds. These figures prove the nationwide acceptance 'and the growing need for Nursing Homes. In every way, we are applying modern management techniques to maximize cost effectiveness, in the face of continuing inflation. We are aware of the tremendous future demands on our present facilities.

We are determined and dedicated to meet these demands. Remember, it is the law of nature that everyone of us grow old. Nobody has invented an eternal youth pill. Have you given thought to the time when you grow old and who will take care of you? Treat you with dignity and respect and understanding? Who will do this? What will happen to you? Will you live with your children or relatives and let them take care of you? Is that what you want? To be a burden to someone? Will you live out your years in lonely solitude, sickness, senility? Is that what you have to look forward to? Or, will you be a guest. That's right a guest at a Nursing Home that truly and honestly accepts you, respects you, understands, cares for you and permits you to maintain your dignity We are doing this today for many people who once were like you.

It's your present attitudes and understanding and interest that will keep us doing our jobs tomorrow. Yes, Nursing Homes are indeed proud of their hard won accomplishments. We have created miracles in just a few years. But we are not satisfied. More must be done.

Has to be done. And will be done. We have done too well to stop now. We have established this claim there is No Generation Gap inside our Nursing Homes. Can you say the same about your own home?
