Social Security uses several sources to determine disability The following questions and answers are provided by the Social Security Administration. QUESTION: Just how does Social Security plan to get information needed to determine if a child was disabled based on an application for benefits that was denied as far back as 1980? ANSWER: A Social Security representative will interview the claimant or representative to obtain both medical and nonmedical sources of information. The interview can be conducted either in person or over the phone. In some cases, this will require working with the child, his or her parents, extended family, child welfare agencies or others to obtain medical and other evidence. SSA will make special efforts to locate an adult responsible for the child's care including an attempt to make a personal contact with the child's family or custodian.

The determination of disability will be made based on all the available evidence. QUESTION: My husband and I are going to Europe on vacation. Will we be covered by Medicare if either of us becomes ill? ANSWER: Medicare will not cover you should you become ill in another country. There are only two exceptions to this rule: if you're in the U. S.

and a Mexican or Canadian hospital is closer than any U. S. hospital, or if you're in Canada while traveling to or from Alaska and need hospital care. QUESTION: I heard an announcement on the radio about "work incentives" for people with disabilities. I am disabled and receiving both Social Security and SSI payments.

What are these work incentives and how can they help me? ANSWER: Work incentives are rules that are designed to provide support for beneficiaries with disabilities who want to work. There are different rules for Social Security and SSI, but generally both programs provide cash benefits and continue Medicare or Medicaid while a person with disabilities attempts to work on a regular basis, help with the work expenses resulting from the disability, help with vocational rehabilitation and training for a new line of work. The Social Security office can provide you with special informational materials work incentives for people with disabilities.
