Shana Hammons is a cheerleader and National Honor Society president. But it's not those attributes that make the 17-year-old senior outstanding. And it's not those things that have earned the smiling teenager the attention of everyone around her. It's the fact that she is doing all those things while fighting a second bout with acute lymphatic leukemia that has touched hearts. Miss Hammons, whose bald head distinguishes her from classmates, is sometimes too sick from the effects of chemotherapy to attend class.

But she has been known to cheer at basketball games just hours after a treatment and even attended a banquet with an intravenous drug pump in a fanny pack. "I guess I'm here to be an inspiration to people," said Miss Hammons, whose twice-pierced ears sport both hoop and stud earrings. "Even though you have tough times, you can get through them and make the best of them." Miss Hammons has been chosen for a Horatio Alger National Scholar Award, which is given to 85 seniors who have shown great academic promise and leadership, despite obstacles. Principal Bob Burgess is impressed by Miss Hammons' tenacity. "She refuses to let it make any difference except when it has to," he said.

He been a big inspiration to me; always there for me. He's just a really good friend." The two of them explained to me that their friendship was one of brotherly love they can't remember when they first met, more than three years ago, but have always been able to work together and stand each other ever since. "Paul's a little psycho," says Pilate, sending the other into gales of laughter.

"But he's very emotional and talented." A dream for Coffin For Mary is to have a group of faithful followers. Feeling it too hard to reach the older generations, who aren't open-minded enough to accept their music, this band wants to reach our generation. Coffin For Mary is a unique band of people, at the very least but, not only do they seem to have highly ethical feelings, they have a strong, if not contorted, grasp on the meaning of today's society and the world they live in. And they would love to hear from you. Traci Till, a third-grader at Forest Hill Elementary, finished second; Tiffany Vanderwater, a second-grader at North Bayou Rapides Elementary was third; and Alex Lawson, a second-grader at articles about the band between a hard cover. Very little in Cobain was actually written for the book. The bulk of the book's 144 pages is articles Rolling Stone magazine originally published while Nirvana ruled the rock world.

The haunting cover of the book appeared on the cover of the magazine's tribute issue to Cobain, where the last 60 or so pages first appeared. The majority of the photographs and caricatures in the book also appeared in Rolling Stone. There are two enlightening new portions of Cobain. One deals with fan's reactions to the early dates of the band's final U.S. concert tour, which started in the fall of 1993.

The other is an interview with Courtney Love, Cobain's widow and singersongwriter for the practice after the others had begun setting up. He was attending an honor band performance earlier in the day. But Bobby came right in, sat down and began playing his drums. "I've had my set for about a year now," he said. "But I was playing on other people's drums for a long time before that.

I love it." The band members enjoy playing their music, and they are hoping for bigger things. "We are Just having fun now," Chad said. "But eventually we would like to get paid to play." "It would be good to cut a yet. Reacting to them by acting like them won't make you feel better. Consider all the students at your school who would love to get a smile and "hello" from you and your friends.

The interview with Ms. Love originally ran in Rolling Stone, but the book features a longer version, complete with the couple arguing good-naturedly about the Beatles. Two articles are not reason enough to spend $24.95. It's a lot cheaper and less goul-ish to just pick up the four issues of Rolling Stone that had major articles about Nirvana. If you're a fan, you probably bought those issues once before.

The whole idea of a coffee table tribute to Kurt Cobain is somewhat nauseating anyhow. The man committed suicide because the pressures of stardom knocked his already fragile emotional balance out of kilter. And like any good punk, Cobain aggressively avoided the full-scale hero worship and idolatry Cobain represents. record," Dan said. "But as of right now, we're just playing for ourselves." They said the number of garage bands in central Louisiana is on the rise.

"I've heard about some more bands," Chad said. "It's picking up around here." "There are a good many," Dan said. "And they're all wanting that lucky shot." Cobain Continued from C-l along with striking covers of songs that influenced the band and "Live! Tonight! Sold a home video comprised of various concert and television appearances Nirvana made to the tasteless and repulsive T-shirts featuring the suicide note Cobain left behind. Somewhat in between the two poles is Cobain a tribute by the editors of Rolling Stone magazine. On one hand, the book features lavish photography and design and well-written articles to pay tribute to an important musician.

On the other hand, the book is a cynical ploy to squeeze a few bucks out of Nirvana fans by slapping a bunch of old magazine Bands Continued from C-l Ben said the band may soon move its rehearsals to his home. Most of the music they perform is original, with Dan writing most of the lyrics, and Chad Badeaux, a 16-year-old Junior at Pineville High, writing the music.
