Two councils of the state's Telephone Pioneers of America gave the donations. Each has adopted the center as one of its service projects.

Telephone Pioneers is a service organization composed of ATiT employees who have worked for the company at least 1 8 years, said Jim Crawford, an engineer with in Shreveport. Crawford and a fellow Shreveport engineer developed the headset after hearing of student Joey Hebcrt's difficulty in hearing typing exercises with the headset provided. The headset they designed has an amplifier and separate volume controls for each ear. Hebert suffers from Usher's Syndrome, a condition which gradually causes deafness and blindness. Though present at birth, the condition is often not apparent for several years, said Joanne Fcrnandes, center director.

Hebert said when he first learned he had Usher's Syndrome, he "took it hard. I was really scared." Since beginning his training at the center, he has become more confident about his future. He originally wanted to do paint and body work on cars. But as he has realized that blindness and deafness would rule that out, he now plans to be a butcher. The Ouachita Council, represented by president Malcolm Bass, presented the microwave and freezer to the center along with a large facsimile check for $2,500.

The appliances were bought using a portion of this money. Edwina Stearns, coordinator for the state Pioneers, said 25 percent of any money raised by a council must go to some charity, and Ouachita had decided to adopt the Center for the Blind. Mrs. Fcrnandes said the appliances will go in a second home economics kitchen, which will meet the needs of the expanding training program for blind adults. (l Kings Hw.) Sat. 22 1-22)5 BATON ROUGE (AP) Three alleged leaders of the world's largest cocaine ring were indicted Tuesday on charges of hiring the murder of a federal narcotics informant who was about to testify against the gang. "These are the largest cocaine distributors in the world." said Al Winters, director of the federal Organized Crime Strike Force in New Orleans. "These are the highest-ranking members." The three Colombians, none of whom is in custody, were charged with hiring the Feb. 19 murder of Barry Seal, who was machine-gunned to death at a Baton Rouge halfway house where he was serving a sentence for narcotics dealing.

Seal, 45, was a former airline pilot who smuggled about 20,000 pounds of cocaine before becoming an informant whose testimony led to the indictment of 23 alleged traffickers in Miami and Las Vegas. Gasoline price war spreads in Houston HOUSTON (AP) An old-fashioned price war in Houston is bringing leaded and unleaded gasoline to among the lowest prices in the nation, an analyst says. Over the weekend, several 59.9-cent prices for both types of gasoline popped up in southwest Houston as fierce competition is prompting some dealers to lower prices to build volume, said Tom Farris, Pasadena Shell dealer who is president of the Lone Star Service Station Association. Only some service stations in Bakersfield, have lowered their prices to that level, says Dan Lundberg whose company, Lundberg Survey monitors 17,000 service stations across the country as part of the services of a weekly newsletter. Waiting depositors given drinks to sip ODESSA, Texas (AP) About 200 depositors sipped soft drinks provided by the government and sat on folding chairs as they lined up Tuesday to retrieve their savings from Permian Bank of Odessa, the 12th bank to fail this year in oil-dependent Texas.

SOUTH SOUTHWEST The bank, named after the oil-rich Permian Basin in West Texas, was shut down Friday by the Federal Deposit Insurance which blamed the closing on bad energy loans. Unlike three other banks in the Midland-Odessa area that have gone under since 1983, no buyer was found to keep Permian Bank afloat and it will cease to exist after all deposits are settled. Customers with less than $100,000 in deposits will get all their money, said FDIC closing supervisor Ken Gorham. Tapes removed following warning BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -Police Chief Charlie Dye says he told a video store owner that some tapes offered by the business might be considered pornography.

The owner says he stopped selling the tapes, although he says obscenity laws are unclear. Dye said in an interview Tuesday that he visited the store, which he refused to identify, after receiving a call from a citizen, lie said he did not view the tapes, but that based on their labels, the tapes "would be bordering on hard core and in violation of state law." The chief said he planned to make periodic checks for the materials. Woman is charged in robbery attempt ALEXANDRIA (AP) A 30-year-old Alexandria woman was in custody Tuesday, charged with the attempted armed robbery of a Rapides Bank Trust branch, police said. Rita M. Moran was arrested Monday, minutes after a pistol-wielding woman demanded cash at the bank's drive-up window, said Capt.

George Fuller. She told police she is unemployed. A bank employee said the would-be robber "didn't get a dime" because the female teller "got down behind the brick wall on the floor and pushed the (alarm) buzzer." Minden resident shot to death during scuffle with police MINDEN A 29-year-old Minden resident was shot and killed by a Mind-en police officer Tuesday during a scuffle at the Jr. Food Mart on Shreveport Road here. Chief of police Chester Adcock said Ed Allen Colbert was shot in the upper left chest after police responded to a disturbance call at the business around 6:20 p.m.

Two officers found Colbert outside the store, after he had allegedly been inside harassing the lone female attendant, he said. A struggle ensued, and Colbert had disabled one officer, Adcock said, when he turned on Officer Lee Walters who pulled his pistol to defend himself, shooting the suspect. Further investigation into the incident will be conducted, Adcock said. 12 off frames when you buy lenses Limited timi; only. purchase a complete pair ol proscription rind the frames will cost 12 the leipilar pnco No other discounts apply Professional eye exam referral Soft Contact Lenses Daily Wear $59.50 ttv ludnn HAL.

Doctor's prescription required Lincoln police jury OKs bridge repairs Montgomery Ward Times Ruston Bureau RUSTON Another of Ruston's closed bridges will soon be repaired, as the Lincoln Parish Police Jury voted Tuesday to authorize a contract and begin work on the structure. Louisiana Paving Co. of Ruston will repair the Everett Street bridge, a wooden structure connecting the street with the Louisiana Tech Univer sity campus.
