That goes right through Gill By Van Craddock Entertainment Editor Dropping a Big Three network affiliation (ABC, CBS, NBC) is rare in the television business.

In fact, some people might think a TV station would be crazy to do something like that. But officials at Longvlew's KLMG-TV, channel 51, are hoping just such a move will prove to be crazy as a Fox. Pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission, the station a CBS affiliate since taking the air in August 1984 plans to make the switch April 1 to the up-and-coming Fox Broadcasting Co. "Fox is almost non-existent in this market," says Brent Skinner, KLMG's general manager. "We feel we have an opportunity to be a leader in entertainment and news in this market." Fox, founded five years ago, is the network of such programming as "The Simpsons," "Married With Children," "In Living Color," "Cops" and "America's Most Wanted." The closest Fox affiliate is KMSS, channel 33 in Shreveport, La.

The network is how offering prime-time programming four fights a week (Thurday-Sunday) as well as original afternoon and Saturday morning programs. Skinner said local viewers also will be seeing more prime-time movies on channel 51. He said the station is assembling "a substantial feature film library" and is lining up a number of syndicated programs. Switching to Fox will "allow us to be more flexible in our programming," Skinner said. Because of that, the station plans to move its 10 p.m.

local newscast to 9 p.m. on April 1. That will let channel 51 offer what Skinner said will be the market's only prime-time local newscast. Past problems at KLMG have been well documented, including equipment woes and stiff competition from KLTV-channel 7 (ABC), and KETKrchannel 56 (NBC). KLMG, whose studio is located just off 1-20 oh Longvlew's south side, has traditionally trailed its competitors in numbers of viewers.

The station also just went through protracted bankruptcy proceedings. But the anticipated affiliation change, a major upgrading of the station building and equipment and a recetchange of ownership have KLMG officials smiling again. Earlier this month the transfer of KLMG's ownership to Kamin Broadcasting Co.Longview Limited Partnership was completed. President of Kamin Broadcasting is Lester Kamin of Houston, me," he said. Gill and the Judds will sing' their favorites and hits 8 p.m.

Feb. 23 at the Oil Palace. "Lately, there's been so many enjoyed fast growth. There are now 136 Fox-affiliated stations around the United States, Adam Ware, director of affiliate relations for the Los Angeles-based company, told the News-Journal. "We are spending over $1.5 million to upgrade our transmitter, the studio, studio equipment and production facilities," said Skinner.

"Weather permitting and barring any unforeseen shipping delays, all this should happen by April 1." Included in that upgrading will be an expanded coverage area, especially to the south, allowing thannel 51's signal to reach into Nacogdoches and the Lufkin area. Still another change for what will be known as "Fox 51" are new call letters for the station, Skinner said. That, too, is pending FCC approval. Channel 51 has applied for the call letters KFXK, he said. described by Skinner as "a-hands-on" operator.

He's hot just an investor. He'll be spending a lot of time in Longview." According to Skinner, "We had the option of remaining a CBS affiliate," noting the station's contract with the network ends on March 31. "It's not because we think CBS isn't offering good programming. They are. And CBS programming will be still be available in this area (from Shreveport and Dallas-Fort Worth stations).

We just wanted to be different from what was being offered. "To our knowledge, we are one of the first stations in the country to voluntarily drop a network affiliation" said Skinner, 42, who came to KLMG earlier this month from an NBC affiliate in Brownsville.
