The Town Ta'k Aa3' a-Pv -He La S.yyja 20 194 B-5 Agony Bowden fit to of defeat be tied after Auburn loss Hlu-ST 1 t.fi'tT ti ft Gaylea Duskey I 4 The Team Ta'k V. LI rf' I vr- BIRMINGHAM. Ala. (AP) A tie would have felt good this time. Not that Auburn would have played for one.

Coach Terry Bowden had already decided to go for a 2-point conversion if the Tigers could have scored just one more touchdown against Alabama on Saturday. "No doubt." he said following No. 6 Auburn's 21-14 loss to the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide. "I knew what play we were going to call. I guess I'll save it for next year." One week after a 23-23 tie with Georgia ended their 20-game winning streak, the Tigers walked off the field as losers for the first time in two seasons but not without a furious comeback that had them feeling better once they had time to absorb it.

"We're disappointed. It's a big hurt." punter Terry Daniel said. "But I'm proud of this team. We almost came back and got it." ty. He apologized for his outburst afterwards, but it was understandable given the emotion of the moment.

Even before that, facing first-and 99 from its own 1 with 1:47 remaining. Auburn left the most-ly-Alabama crowd of 83.091 at Legion Field gasping for air when Thomas Bailey got behind the secondary down the right sideline. But Nix. facing a heavy rush in his own end zone, overthrew the pass. "It's a game of inches, just like Frank on that last play." Bailey said.

"I felt like I could beat (freshman cornerback Deshea) Townsend all day. He's a young guy. I got a couple of steps on him. but Pat had to get rid of the ball and I wasn't fast enough to catch up with it." Even with Alabama only needing to run one more play to run out the clock. Bailey thought the Tigers still had a chance.

"We have a great defense." he said. "I "Life goes on." quarterback Patrick Nix said. "The sun comes up tomorrow. I'm going to go home and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with my family." Rallying from a 21-0 halftime deficit. Auburn scored two touchdowns in the second half but came up less than an inch short on a fourth and 3 play at the Alabama 40 with 31 seconds remaining.

There was plenty of controversy about where the ball was placed after Frank Sanders caught a pass from Patrick Nix across the middle. Alabama felt like the Tigers were stopped well short, while Auburn believed it got a bad spot from the officials. "I thought when they pulled the chains down it was a first down." Nix said. "I was already getting ready for the next play." When the referee signalled Alabama ball. Nix protested vehemently and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penal The Aggies are ineligible for postseason play due to an NCAA probation.

Slocum was not involved in the booster-related infractions that led to the probation, according to an NCAA report. Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes, who has a 46-42-1 career record and is 6-4 this season, is also on LSU athletic director Joe Dean's long list. Dean said he wouldn't discriminate against a candidate whose LSU reportedly to talk Prairie View's Steve Harvey sits quietly after another loss. Prairie View falls for 46th straight PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (AP) John Whitcomb set Alabama-Birmingham records with 33 completions for 539 yards and six touchdowns in a 48-6 victory Saturday over Prairie View, which extended its record NCAA Division I-AA losing streak to 46 straight. UAB, which has been a I-AA independent since 1991, set seven school records and tied another as it won its sixth straight to finish the year 7-4.

Prairie View fell to 0-11 for its fourth straight losing season. The Panthers, who didn't play in 1990, last won on Oct. 28, 1989, against Mississippi Valley State. "Let's just say the bleeding stopped," Prairie View coach Ron Beard said. "But the players don't want to end the season.

They wished they had one more game, but it isn't going to happen." The Panthers trailed only 7-0 after the first quarter, but it was 28-0 by halftime as Whitcomb threw three TD passes, two to Bobby Ingram. "I just kept getting by them," Ingram said. "I don't think they were noticing me." Folks have asked who I think will be the next football coach at LSU. I think it will be Detlef Schrempf. I got the idea while watching a "Stooge-a-thon" recently on cable television when I realized that the athletic department seems to be run in something of a Three Stooges fashion.

First off. the head honcho (athletic director) is Joe Dean. They had Curley Hallman and a couple of Larrys (Larry Zierlein and Larry Edmondson). Yes, I know it was Joe and not Moe. but still Curley, Joe and Larry a natural.

Anyhow, after watching the "Stooge-a-thon" I got to thinking that when Curley died he was replaced by Shemp. Yes, I know that Schrempf isn't quite Shemp, but, as pitiful as the LSU management has been, it's close enough. Of course, as colleague Robert Roan points out, they'd need to bring in Mo Iba and Larry Brown to complete the set. But seriously, folks Seriously now, if I had to pick a legitimate candidate to become the next head football coach at LSU. I'd go with R.C.

Slocum. Why? Several reasons. First, he's expressed interest in the job. Second, he's an Oakdale, Louisiana native. Third, LSU is a step up from Texas (sorry Aggie fans).

And, finally, if he stays at Texas he's going to have to be going up against a bunch of new bullies in the Big 12 that the Aggies are joining and I can guarantee you that Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma are a lot tougher than Rice, SMU and Houston. About those Chihuahuas I had an ex-Northeast Louisiana University athlete stop in the office the other day and tell me he wishes I would lay off the "Chihuahua" stuff in reference to his school and that I should apologize for using the term Fighting Chihuahuas instead of Indians when referring to NLU. He said he showed a lack of respect on my part and was partially brought on by the fact that NLU beat Marshall in the 1987 1-AA championship game. And, perhaps, he was right. The term Fighting Chihuahua came about when I said that putting the NLU football team up against a schedule that included Auburn, Colorado, Georgia, BYU, was like throwing a Chihuahua into a yard full of hungry pit bulls.

I thought it was a logical point and when co-worker Mike Mahoney, who's father Jim Mahoney coached the NLU basketball team, said something to the effect of "what about those Fighting Chihuahuas it just kind of took off from there. But the NLU athlete made a valid point and I shall make an effort not to refer to that school's athletic teams as Fighting Chihuahuas any more. I will use the more political incorrect, but more accurate, Indians. The can on the tail While I am sorry if I chafed some people with the use of an erroneous nickname for the Indians, I still feel that NLU made a big mistake going 1-A in football. Some say that by taking the poundings the school can pay additional bills but, in order to be allowed to take the poundings you've got to increase your scholarship total in football by 20 and that seems like something akin to a wash to me.

And the idea of ever getting an Auburn or an Alabama to play in Malone Stadium just a dream. No, NLU will continue to play the likes of Arkansas State, North Texas, Weber State and Central Florida as home games and none of those teams are any more enticing that SLC foes NSU, McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin. The Indians' salvation may be to get in a conference but the most logical one the Big West has already turned a blind eye their way and probably will continue to do so as long as Louisiana Tech remains a member. Freshman quarterback Kevin Drake was 5-of-15 for 72 yards, helping UAB set team records for completions (38), passing yards (611) and total offense (695). Prairie View's lone points came midway through the third quarter when Reginald Prudhomme threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Torrance Brooks. Alphone Provo, one of 16 Prairie View seniors, was upset not to have another chance at ending the streak.

"I had hopes of winning a football game before I left," said Provo, who played in all 46 losses. "I really thought we'd win six or seven games this year." The future of football at Prairie View is clouded at best as officials are considering dropping the program, or moving down to Division II or III. "I'm pretty sure the program will continue," Beard said. "But the administration is going to have to address the future and decide which way they want to go."
