Seuss Journalists Judith and Neil Morgan trace the life and career of the public icon. BY STEVE JONES Gannett News Service No one ever tickled kids' funny bones or those of their parents or their parents' parents like Dr. Seuss. For nearly 60 years, his loopy rhymes and zany characters have been just the antidote for the often dreary and trite stories passed off as children's literature. Yet, the late Theodore Geisel, whose Seussian creations like The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! kept generations of children laughing, never had children of his own and actually claimed to be terrified of them.

When he died in 1991 at 87, he was one of the most beloved grownups in Amer-; ica. In the engaging biography, Dr. Seuss Mr. Geisel, journalists Judith and Neil Morgan trace the life and career of the public icon who was most at home in his La-Jolla, studio with his pencils and paintbrushes. Drawing on anecdotes from family, friends and colleagues and from Geisel's letters and autobio-' graphical notes, the Morgans re- veal an intensely private man, his personal tragedies and his public triumphs.

Geisel spent 10 years as a commercial artist before selling his first book. And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street, to Vanguard Press in 1937. Twenty-seven other publishers had told him that the book was too unlike other children's books. Dr. Seuss books would go on to sell more than 200 million copies.

Geisel was thoroughly dedicated to his work, even as his health began to fail. He wrote Can Read with My Eyes Shut! while fighting glaucoma in the mid-70s. And an ailing 80-year-old Geisel got just what the Dr. 'needed in 1985 at Princeton Uni-'versity when the graduating class rose in unison and recited the full text of Green Eggs and Ham. His spirits buoyed, Geisel wrote his next blockbuster, You're Only Old Actually, with Dr.

Seuss, you're forever young. k5H Li BRIDAL PATH Information for BRIDAL PATH must be submitted at least four days before the event on a special form available In The Times Living Department, 222 Lake P.O. Box 30222, Shreveport, La. 71130-0222 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
