Smoke and flames from a burning car stopped traffic in the eastbound lane of Martin Luther PUSH America riders leave today en route to Washington, D.C. By STACY FEDUCIA The Times Never have so many men been so happy to sleep on a hard floor after an icy shower. That is, until 26 cyclists cranked into Shreve-port Thursday afternoon at a stop on their cross-country crusade. "When you get off that bike, you're so tired you'll sleep anywhere," said cyclist Vaughan Alexander, a 20-year-old student at Avery College in Virginia. Alexander and fellow Pi Kappa Phi fraternity members spent the night at the LSU-Shreveport gym during the Longview to Shreve-port leg of the Journey of Hope, a cross-country bicycle trip to raise money and awareness for the mentally and physically disabled.

The Journey of Hope has raised more than $300,000 for PUSH America, the fraternity's philanthropic project, said trip director Eric Schmidhausler. The ride began June 13 on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, where a total of 67 cyclists split into two groups, which will traverse the northern and southern halves of America before reuniting in Washington, D.C. Arriving in Shreveport, the southern group with its 12-man support crew had already covered more than 2,500 miles with more than 1,000 to go.
