Keplinger is confined to a Pacific hospital by wounds sustained on Luzon May 2, according to a telegram just received by his i Mrs. Delorous C.

Keplinger, 225 East Franklin stre t. Sgt. Kepliuger, a former Fairchild employe, has been overseas about ten mouths, having been inducted into the Army December 23, 1942. He was wounded on Leyte in December, 1944, and was released from the hospital about four weeks later. The telegram stated that fuller information would follow.

A German officer was called to 'witness the proceedings, and the prisoner, in a flash of genius, thrust the sack into the Nazi's hand, implying that he was to hold it while the search was conducted. After he had stripped, submitted to a search, and re-dressed, Plotuer reached for the sack. Without a word the thick-skulled Nazi handed it over.

There was variety in the camp menu that night, and rejoicing aim ng the nrisoners. The local boy says that his first real evidence of Nazi brutishness was obtained during his first weeks as a prisoner. Deprived of food for seven days over his capture, he and his fellow prisoners were forced to walk over 100 miles under extremely harsh circumstances. The camp to which they were finally confined was the Hammelburg camp, Staeleg 13-C. One of Pfc.

Plotner's acquaintances was General Patton's son-in- law, whose feet he often bandaged when the latter was a patient in the prisoners' hospital. Reunited at last with his wife, Mrs. Una Lee Plotner, and his two- year-old son, Gilbert, the local medical aide is relaxing for the first time in many months. He will report to Ashville, N. for reassign- ment when his leave expired.

His mother, Mrs. Lillian Plotner, lives on the Mt. Etna road, while his father, Howard Plotner, resides in Martinsburg. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, was the son of a well known speech professor. Gilbert Plotner, of Hagerstown, numbers among the souvenirs of his experience a case of beri-beri and a firm conviction thai the German master minds "don't know how to use their heads." Take the incident of the sack of vegetables, only one of many that Pfc. Plotner has related to friends and relatives in Hagerstown since he arrived home on Saturday for a 60-day leave. It seems that Young Plotner, whose skill as a medical aide placed him in charge of the prison camp's "hospital." was given comparatively free run of the camp arid the surrounding countryside during daylight hours. Identified by a Red Cross armband, young Plotner would range the surrounding farms and villages in search of civilians willing to trade a few vegetables foi cigarettes or other articles that the prisoners contributed from their Red Cross boxes. Vegetables, as might be expected, were conspicuous for their absence from prison camp menus.

Consequently, most of the fellows, rather than eat the starchy and unpalatable fare offered them, chose to suffer from malnutrition. Plotner, however, figured he would rather be nourished and risk an attack of beriberi from excess starch. Although he did eventually contract beri-beri, the local boy was able to maintain his energy and actually gain weight during his confinement. On this particular day, Plotner ad made an unusually good haul carrots, cabbages, etc. Aware hat smuggling articles into camp vas strictly forbidden, and that the guards occasionally insisted upon earching his person, he put the ood in a sack and slung it care- essly over his back as he entered he gate.
